The results are presented and compared with the traditional Monte Carlo calculation. This study indicates that the present theory may provide a useful tool for the joint handling of randomness and fuzziness in the computation of reliability and may have a good potential to be used for reliability assessment of coastal structures. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.EnglishBreakwatersMonte Carlo methodsRandom variablesReliability analysisReliability theoryUnderwater foundationsCoastal structuresFuzzy random variableMonte Carlo calculationMonte Carlo SimulationPossibilityReliability assessmentsRubble mound breakwatersbreakwatercoastal structurefuzzy mathematicsMonte Carlo analysisreliability analysisrisk assessmentCoastal engineeringReliability analysis of a rubble mound breakwater using the theory of fuzzy random variablesArticle10.1016/j.apor.2012.10.007
