They are strongly associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, Toll-like receptors have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of several skin diseases such as skin infections, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, lichen planus, Behçet's disease, leprosy, syphilis, Lyme disease, atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma. In this manuscript, the structure and functions of Toll-like receptors in immune responses, their impact on skin diseases and recent advances on therapeutic usage have been reviewed. © 2011 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.EnglishHumansSignal TransductionSkinSkin DiseasesToll-Like ReceptorsadapalenebropirimineCpG oligodeoxynucleotideimiquimodloxoribinemyeloid differentiation factor 88nicotinamidepimecrolimusresiquimodretinoidtacrolimustoll like receptortoll like receptor 1toll like receptor 10toll like receptor 11toll like receptor 2toll like receptor 3toll like receptor 4toll like receptor 5toll like receptor 6toll like receptor 7toll like receptor 8toll like receptor 9tosylchloramide sodiumzinc derivativeacne vulgarisactinic keratosisalopecia areataantineoplastic activityantiviral activityatopic dermatitisbacterial skin diseasebasal cell carcinomaBehcet diseaseBorrelia burgdorferiBowen diseasebullous pemphigoidCandida albicanscondyloma acuminatumcutaneous T cell lymphomacytokine productiondermatitis herpetiformisherpes simplexHerpes simplex virusherpes zosterhumanhumoral immunityimmune responseimmunostimulationKaposi sarcomakeloidkeratinocytelentigoleprosylichen planusLyme diseasemelanomamolluscum contagiosumMycobacterium lepraenecrobiotic disorderPaget skin diseaseplasmacytoid dendritic cellpriority journalPropionibacterium acnespsoriasisradiation injuryreviewsarcoidosissclerodermaskin biopsyskin cancerskin diseasesquamous cell carcinomasyphilissystemic lupus erythematosusTreponema pallidumVaricella zoster virusverruca vulgarisvitiligoToll-like receptors and skinReview10.1111/j.1468-3083.2011.04049.x
