Item An Analysis on the Operations and Functions of a Shari.Ahcourt: The Case of Ottoman ÜskÜdar (1547-1551)(Bursa IlahIyat Foundation, 2020) Çelik F.Through a close reading of a single register found in the sixteenthcentury court record series of Üsküdar, this article introduces the reader to the operations of the Shari.ah court of Üsküdar and its records from 1547 to 1551. By approaching the court records as both “text” and “document,” it explores the functions of the court, identifies the court officials, defines their roles, and delineates the role played by the qa.i, his court and the local community in the administration of justice. This article can be read as a contribution to the newly emerging literature on variations in the Shari.ah courts in the Ottoman Empire in terms of their operations. As the recent literature including this present study demonstrates, the duties of the local Shari.ah court in the Ottoman Empire are neither singular nor monolithic. While some of the courts provided notarial and administrative services primarily, others acted as significant sites for dispute resolution. Hence their operations were primarily judicial. What emerges from this study is that the court Üsküdar in the very middle of the sixteenth century primarily functioned as a “public registry.” © 2020. It may also affect the prognosis for their children. The aim of this study is to determine depression and burnout levels as well as their predictors among parents of children with ASD compared with those of healthy children. We also sought to evaluate rate of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions among parents and explore the associations of this phenomenon in an exploratory fashion. 145 children with ASD and 127 control children were enrolled along with their mothers and fathers. Beck Depression Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used to evaluate parents’ depression symptoms and burnout levels. Symptoms of children with ASDs were evaluated according to the Childhood Autism Rating Scale by the clinicians. Family, child and CAM variables were screened by means of a sociodemographic data form. Descriptive, bivariate and correlation analyses were used in statistical evaluations. Predictors of burnout were evaluated with multiple regression analysis. Burnout and depression levels among parents of children with ASD were significantly elevated compared to controls. Burnout levels of mothers were significantly elevated compared to fathers while depression scores of fathers were significantly elevated compared to mothers. Maternal burnout was significantly predicted by presence of functional speech in child while paternal burnout was significantly predicted by paternal vocation. Maternal depression was associated with paternal depression, lack of speech in child and attendance of child to special education services. Paternal depression was associated with autistic symptom severity and maternal depression. More than half the parents sought CAM interventions. Education level did not affect search for CAM interventions while both maternal and paternal psychopathology and presence of epilepsy among children increased use of CAM methods. Psychological support should be provided to both mothers and fathers of a child receiving a diagnosis of ASD. Addressing parents’ burnout and stress levels and facilitating their negotiation of knowledge on etiology and treatments for ASD may be beneficial for the family unit as a whole. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC part of Springer Nature.Item Effects of Oral Stimulation and Supplemental Nursing System on the Transition Time to Full Breast of Mother and Sucking Success in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Çelik F.; Sen S.; Karayagiz Muslu G.This study aimed to investigate the effect of oral stimulation and a supplemental nursing system on the time to full maternal breastfeeding and sucking success in preterm infants. The sample consisted of 70 preterm babies. Oral motor stimulation and a supplemental nursing system were applied to the preterm infants in the experimental group, while no intervention was applied to those in the control group. Significant differences were found between the two groups concerning transition time to oral feeding, transition weight, transition time to full maternal breast, discharge age, duration, and weight, LATCH mean scores, continuing to suck in the first month after discharge, and weight averages. Oral stimulation and a supplemental nursing system shortened the transition period to oral feeding and full breastfeeding, increased breastfeeding rates and the sustainability of breastfeeding, and did not affect the period of discharge and vital signs during feeding in preterm babies. © The Author(s) 2021.Item Reading the Middle East through the Lens of Women’s Press in Turkey: The Case of Women’s Voice Monthly (1975-1980)(Islamic Research Institute, 2022) Çelik F.; Saritunali A.G.The Progressive Women’s Association (PWA), founded in 1975 under the auspices of the Turkish Communist Party (TCP) when second-wave feminism was on the rise in Europe, emerged as the largest and most significant women’s organization in Turkey’s recent history. However, the organization did not position itself within the feminist paradigm. Instead, it worked for women’s causes without a feminist lineage. Thus, one of the principal questions of this study is how and to what extent the women’s movement in Europe, particularly second-wave feminism, was reflected by the women who founded the PWA and mobilized thousands of women during its five-year existence before it was shut down following the military coup in 1980. By relying on the journal Kadınların Sesi (Women’s Voice) published by the PWA, this study attempts to analyse how and to what extent women of the PWA followed and interpreted Middle East politics and specifically the condition of women in the Middle East. Previous studies on the PWA and its role in the history of the Turkish women’s movement have focused on locating the PWA within the socio-political context of modern Turkish history in general, and Turkish women’s history in particular. This study departs from the existing literature and unpacks how these women reflected upon the world in which they lived by focusing on what they wrote about the Middle East and women in the region. © 2022, Islamic Research Institute. However, the relationship of spinal tumor and COVID-19 longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) coexistence has never been reported in our knowledge. The clinical presentation and response to treatment of a 24-year-old female patient diagnosed with COVID-19 LETM and anaplastic ependymoma are described in this case report. The Patient’s cerebrospinal fluid COVID-19 antibody level was higher than serum and she was resistant to immunosuppressive treatment. The interaction between COVID-19 and spinal tumor was discussed in the light of the literature. It is thought that COVID-19 infection could trigger tumor growth in this patient. Also, this is the first case of anaplastic ependymoma and COVID-19 myelitis coexistence in the literature. © 2023 by Turkish Association of Neuropsychiatry.Item Two decades of research on Roma in Türkiye: Socioeconomic exclusion, identity, and state policies(Liverpool University Press, 2024) Çelik F.; Ustuk O.The scholarly investigation of Roma communities in Türkiye has intensified since the 2000s, largely driven by Türkiye’s EU accession candidacy and subsequent adaptation process. This alignment, along with internal developments, prompted governments to prioritize Roma issues, implement projects, and issue action plans. The Roma Civil Society Movement in the 1990s further highlighted Roma challenges, resulting in a diverse body of literature. This study critically examines academic literature to map prevailing trends and thematic foci. Key areas of scholarly engagement include the various dimensions of socio-economic exclusion faced by Roma in education, employment, housing, and health. Additionally, scholars analyze how Roma negotiate and resist pejorative representations, construct their identities, and organize to address contemporary challenges. State policies affecting Roma, from past to present, also receive considerable attention. By critically engaging with this scholarship, the present study highlights significant progress and ongoing challenges in Romani Studies in Türkiye, offering insights into future research directions. © 2024 Liverpool University Press.
