Item A comparison of contribution of informed consent forms with long or short texts with regard to obtaining knowledge by volunteers: A pilot study; [Tıbbi bilgi alma baǧlamında uzun ve kısa metinli bilgilendirilmiş onam formlarının gönüllülerin bilgilenme düzeyine katkısının karşılaştırılması: Bir pilot çalışma](Gulhane Military Medical Academy, 2011) Yildirim G.; Kadioǧlu S.; Alan S.; Altiparmak S.AIM: The objective is to determine which of the two texts giving information about the same issue and one of which id short and one of which is long is more effective in enlightening readers having no pre-knowledge of medical science and whether there is coherence between the scores obtained from the texts. METHOD: The sampling of the research planned as experimental is constituted by 66 volunteer female students who are 1st year students at the faculty of agriculture. The group was randomly divided into two and the first group was given the short text and the other one the long text. Then the question from was applied in order to find out how much of the information in the form they learnt. Each true answer given to the questions was scored as 1, and each wrong answer was secored as 0; therefore a total grade was obtained. For data analysis, Mann Whitney-U and t Tests analysis methods have been used. Score averages have been compared using Chi-square statistics and calculated using Odds ratio (OR). Consistency between the average scores of the answers given to short and long forms were evaluated through kapa statistics. RESULTS: 100% of the answers obtained using the long form was above the average, 20% of the answers obtained using the short form was above the average and 80% was below the average. Kappa between the answers in the long and short from was found as 81%. The results obtained from the long form were determined to be seven times better than the short one (OR:7,0). The non-random alignment between responses to the long and short form was found to be 81% (Cohen Kappa: 0,814). When the score average scores obtained from the answers given according to the demographic qualities of the participants, no meaningful relation was found. Newborns with ALRI were screened for RSV infection by Respi-Strip®-test. Main outcome measures were the incidence of RSV-associated admissions in the NICUs and morbidity, mortality and epidemics results related to these admissions.Findings: The incidence of RSV infection was 1.24% (n: 250) and RSV infection constituted 19.6% of all ALRI hospitalizations, 226 newborns (90.4%) had community-acquired whereas 24 (9.6%) patients had nosocomial RSV infection in the NICUs. Of the 250 newborns, 171 (68.4%) were full-term infants, 183 (73.2%) had a BW >2500 g. RSV-related mortality rate was 1.2%. Four NICUs reported seven outbreaks on different months, which could be eliminated by palivizumab prophylaxis in one NICU.Conclusion: RSV-associated ALRI both in preterm and term infants accounts an important percent of hospitalizations in the season, and may threat other high-risk patients in the NICU. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.Item A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Investigation of Hopelessness Among University Students in the Aftermath of the COVID-19 Pandemic(SAGE Publications Inc., 2024) Deveci Şirin H.; Şen Doğan R.; Serçe H.; Bayrakcı E.; Alan S.Under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is of vital importance to explore its impact on the psychological wellbeing of the students in higher education. Accordingly, this research investigated hopelessness among students at a state university in Turkey throughout the pandemic. The research was conducted in two separate studies, one cross-sectional and the other longitudinal. Study I examined students’ hopelessness level in relation to gender, job or income loss, social media use, academic unit, and grade. Study II compared students’ hopelessness level during the distance and hybrid education periods. The data were collected online through Personal Information Form and Beck Hopelessness Scale in both studies. The findings of Study I indicated significantly higher hopelessness scores in females, students who experienced job or income loss, and seniors at faculties. It was also found that the level of hopelessness increased as the duration of social media use rose. In addition, Study II revealed that students’ hopelessness scores significantly decreased during the hybrid education in contrast to the distance education. Based on these findings, we suggest that during distance education in times of crisis, psychological counseling and career guidance interventions should be planned and coordinated according to the characteristics of risk groups, and e-learning models offering the highest social interaction should be preferred. © The Author(s) 2024.
