Item EFFECT OF CONCRETE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH VARIATION ON IMPACT BEHAVIOURKantar, E; Arslan, A; Anil, ÖThe least well known loading type is the impact loading that are affecting on to RC structures. For these reason an experimental study is conducted, and the effect of concrete compression strength variation on impact behavior of concrete investigated. Total ten beam specimens at which five of them are manufactured with normal compression strength concrete without reinforcement are prepared. Remaining five had high concrete compression strength. These specimens are tested under the impact loading that is applied by dropping constant weight hammer from five different heights. The acceleration due to impact loading is measured against time. The change of velocity, displacement and energy are calculated for all specimens. The failure modes of the specimens with normal and high concrete compression strength are observed under the loading of constant weight impact hammer that are dropped from different heights. The increase in compression strength of concrete is significantly affected on the impact behaviors of the specimen, and as the compression strength increase impact behavior improved. Dissipated energy, the number of the hammer drops, and accelerations are increased, and displacement is dropped.Item Serum prolidase activity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant enzyme levels in patients with renal cell carcinomaPirinççi, N; Kaba, M; Geçit, I; Günes, M; Yüksel, MB; Tanik, S; Arslan, A; Demir, HObjectives: Prolidase is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family. It plays a vital role in collagen turnover, matrix remodeling, and cell growth. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancers. Oxidative stress can cause tumor angiogenesis and may be carcinogenic. However, the relationship between antioxidant capacity and various cancers has been researched in several clinical trials. In our study, we aimed to identify serum prolidase activity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant enzyme levels in patients with renal tumors and to evaluate their relationships with each other. Materials and Methods: A total of 37 male patients with renal cell cancer and with a mean age of 56.28 +/- 3.1 were included in the study. The control group comprising 36 male patients (mean age 56.31 +/- 2.9) was randomly selected among the volunteers. Serum samples for measurement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and prolidase levels were kept at -20 degrees C until they were used. Results: Serum prolidase activity and MDA levels were significantly higher in renal cancer patients than in controls (all, p < 0.05), while SOD, GSHPx, and GST levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our results indicate that increased prolidase seems to be related to increased oxidative stress along with decreased antioxidant levels in renal cancer.Item Factors determining poor prognostic outcomes following diabetic hand infectionsInce, B; Dadaci, M; Arslan, A; Altuntas, Z; Evrenos, MK; Karsli, MFBackground and Objective: Hand ulcers are seen in a small percentage of patients with diabetes. The predisposing factors of diabetic hand varies between different countries. However, the effects of predisposing factors on prognosis are not clear in diabetic hand infections. In this study, our aim was to determine the effects of predisposing factors on poor prognostic outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: Thirty-four patients with diabetes mellitus who were treated and followed up for a hand infection in between 2008 and 2014 were investigated retrospectively. Patients were evaluated according to predisposing factors defined in the literature that included disease period, age, gender, admission time, presence of neuropathy, smoking habits, HbA1c levels at admission time, peripheral vascular disease, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and trauma. Death and minor/major amputation cases during treatment were defined as poor prognosis. Results: Patients who had ESRD, peripheral neuropathy, or an HbA1c level greater than 10% had significantly higher amputation rates. Conclusions: Peripheral neuropathy, ESRD, and HbA1c levels greater than 10% at the time of admission were determined as poor prognosis criteria for diabetic hand treatment.Item No Association between the Methyleletetrahydrofolate Reductase A1298C Variants and Atrial Fibrillation with Ischemic Stroke in Turkish PopulationIçli, A; Erten, N; Arslan, A; Yücel, H; Akçay, S; Yasar, E; Uysal, BA; Bas, HA; Aksoy, F; Sütçü, RItem Increased Mean Platelet Volume in Hypertrophic CardiomyopathyIcli, A; Aksoy, F; Dogan, A; Arslan, A; Akcay, S; Yücel, H; Ersoy, I; Gorgulu, OThromboembolic events may be seen in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We investigated the mean platelet volume (MPV), an indicator of platelet activation in patients with HCM. This study included 112 patients with HCM, in which 40 were patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and 106 were control participants. The MPV was significantly higher in patients with HCM than in controls (9.1 +/- 0.3 vs 7.9 +/- 0.3 fL, P = .01). In the subgroup analyses, MPV was also higher in patients with HOCM compared to those with hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HNCM; 9.3 +/- 0.3 vs 9.0 +/- 0.2 fL, P = .01). Similarly, patients with HNCM had higher MPV values than controls (9.0 +/- 0.2 vs 7.9 +/- 0.3 fL, P = .01). The MPV was significantly and positively correlated with left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction (r = .42, P = .001) and septal thickness (r =.62, P = .001). In linear regression analysis, MPV was independently associated only with septal thickness (beta = .07, 95% confidence interval: 0.04-0.09, P = .001). With the widespread use of vaccines, COVID-19 has remarkably declined. Adolescents were vaccinated after approvals for this age group, which was later than adults, and a nationwide vaccination program was implemented in August 2021 in Turkey for adolescents >= 12 years of age. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of the COVID-19 nationwide adolescent vaccination program on adolescent hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) by comparing two periods, including the vaccination period (VP) and the pre-VP (PVP). The second aim of this study is to compare the clinical features and disease severity of vaccine-breakthrough COVID-19 hospitalizations with unvaccinated individuals in the VP. Methods A retrospective multicenter study was conducted to determine and compare the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and MIS-C between the VP (September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022) and PVP (September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021). We also compared the characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of breakthrough infections of adolescents aged 12-18, which required hospitalization with the same age group of unvaccinated hospitalized individuals during the VP. Results During the study period, 3967 children (0-18 years) were hospitalized in the PVP and 5143 (0-18 years) in the VP. Of them, 35.4% were adolescents (12-18 years) in the PVP, and this rate was 18.6% in the VP; relative risk was 0.6467 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.6058-0.6904; p < 0.001). Patients with breakthrough COVID- 19 were older (201 vs. 175 months, p < 0.001) and less commonly hospitalized for COVID-19 (81.5% vs. 60.4%, p < 0.001, odds ratio [OR]: 0.347 [95% CI: 0.184-0.654]). The majority of these infections were asymptomatic and mild (32% vs.72.9%: p < 0.001, OR: 5.718 [95% CI: 2.920-11.200]), and PICU admission was less frequently required (p = 0.011, OR: 0.188 [95% CI: 0.045-0.793]). Most breakthrough COVID-19 infections occurred within three months after the last vaccine dose (54.2%). Conclusions This study demonstrated a significant decrease in adolescent hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and MIS -C after implementing COVID-19 vaccines in Turkey. Breakthrough cases were less severe and mostly occurred three months after the last dose. First in Ankara and then in Istanbul, bread was given out in rations and essential goods such as flour, sugar, and medicine became hard to find. Life became very expensive, and a black market emerged from these circumstances. New and unusual tax programs had to be implemented in order to meet the demands of the war time economy. The wealth tax that was introduced for this purpose is not very different from the tax laws implemented in Europe during times of war. The wealth tax left indelible memories on society during this period. The memories, emotions, and thoughts created by the wealth tax appear in novels of the period. This study examines novels that document emotions related to the wealth tax, which is one of the most controversial topics of Turkish economic history.
