Pleural Effusions Complicating Upper Abdominal Surgical Pathologies in Children
    Günsar, C; Asci, A; Sencan, A; Yilmaz, Ö; Mir, E
Intractable pleural effusions can occur during the courses of serious intraabdominal surgical pathologies. Information about the pathogenesis, presentation and management of this pulmonary complication is limited in the literature particularly for the childhood period. In this study we aimed to present our experience on management of three adolescent patients with pleural effusions which developed after upper abdominal surgical pathologies. According to the data collected from our patients, presence of peritoneal fluid, fever higher than 38 degrees C and adolescent age can be risk factors for development of pleural effusions. If intractable fluid collections resist to multiple thoracentesis then tube thoracostomy may be needed for the treatment.

Antenatally Diagnosed Epigastric Heteropagus Twin: Case Report
    Günsar, C; Sencan, A; Baytur, Y; Asci, A; Mir, E
Conjoined twinning is a rare anomaly with a rate of 1 per 50 000-100 000 live births. Heteropagus twinning (parasitic twinning) is a specific and much rarer form of conjoined twinning. In this anomaly, while one of the twins (host twin) develops completely, the other one develops asymmetrically attached to and dependent upon the host (parasitic twin). Number of conjoined twins antenatally diagnosed as heteropagus is considerably few in the literature. Accurate antenatal diagnosis can be helpful to inform the family in the decision to terminate or continue with pregnancy. Antenatal three-dimensional sonography provides an accurate diagnosis and recognition of the details of the anomaly better. In this paper, a case that was diagnosed with epigastric heteropagus twinning with three-dimensional ultrasonography at 17 weeks of gestation with a successful separation with surgery is presented.
