Item The use of agricultural loan: An analysis of farmers' bank selection decisions in Manisa, Turkey(WFL Publisher Ltd., 2013) Kocturk O.M.; Tepeci M.; Duramaz S.; Yatbaz A.Agricultural sector is developing in Turkey, and the funding of farmers is mostly actualised by external resources such as loans. Since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, Ziraat Bank (a state-owned bank) has offered financing to farmers, but today private banks are also financing the farmers and providing loans to them. The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the bank (private versus public) selection factors that influence farmers' decisions on agricultural loan uses, (2) to explore whether farmers value domestic capital banks over foreign capital banks, and (3) to designate the significance of Islamic banking practices for farmers. A survey was conducted on 103 farmers by visiting farms and cooperatives in Manisa. In addition to demographic variables, the survey instrument included 28 items followed by a one-to-five Likert type scale intended to reveal bank selection factors. These factors were reliability, service quality, loan conditions, loan costs, accessibility and individual credibility. The analyses indicated that reliability and accessibility of the banks influenced farmers' bank selections. Farmers who preferred private sector banks for agricultural loan uses perceived higher levels of reliability and accessibility than did farmers who preferred public banks. Farmers perceived higher levels of reliability, service quality, positive loan conditions and lower loan costs for domestic capital banks than they did for foreign capital banks. Farmers who did not value Islamic banking practices perceived lower levels of service quality and reliability with Islamic banking. The study findings suggest that banks should invest more on reliability and accessibility factors to attract and retain their customers. Foreign capital banks could lower their loan costs and improve loan conditions, reliability and service quality to convince farmers to use their banking services. Islamic banks should improve their service quality and increase their reliability on the customers' side.Item Determinants of dollarization of savings in the Turkish economy(MDPI, 2020) Bărbuţă-Mişu N.; Güleç T.C.; Duramaz S.; Virlanuta F.O.This study aims to analyze the nature of the dollarization that takes place in the Turkish economy and to decompose the factors that have contributed to its increase in recent years. With this purpose, we first identify the events that have significantly affected the dollarization trend in Turkey using the Iterative Cumulative Sum of Squares (ICSS) and Markov Switching Dynamic Regression (MS-Dynamic) structural break models. Then, we proceed to analyze the relationship between the percentage of Forex deposits of the residents over total deposits of the residents and the TRY/USD exchange rate using the Johansen cointegration test. USD, EUR, and TRY interest rates are also added to the model as independent variables to account for the effects of the difference between exchange rates. Long-term and short-term effects are tested with the Vector Error Correction Model, and causality is tested using the Granger causality test. The results of the study indicate that speculative trading is not the cause of the dollarization of deposits in Turkey. Additionally, results suggest that the political events have a stronger influence over dollarization compared to economic events. Collectively, our findings suggest that domestic citizens dollarize their deposits with the motivation to protect against political ambiguity rather than economic volatility. The results of the study are in line with the literature in the sense that they support the claim that dollarization can be averted in the short run with an increase in interest rates. © 2020 by the authors.Item The Asymmetric Effect Of Real Effective Exchange Rate Volatility On Agricultural Foreign Trade: The Example Of Turkey In The Period 2013-2021; [Reel Efektif Döviz Kuru Oynaklığının Tarımsal Dış Ticaret Üzerindeki Asimetrik Etkisi: 2013-2021 Arası Dönemde Türkiye Örneği](Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2022) Akin S.; Duramaz S.; Koçtürk O.M.Purpose: The recent extreme volatilities in exchange rates have made it important to examine exchange rate volatility on foreign trade. The aim of this study is to reveal the asymmetric effect of real effective exchange rate volatility on agricultural foreign trade in terms of different economic conjunctures in the period 2013:01-2021:08. Design/Methodology/Approach: ARMA(1,0)-EGARCH(1,1) model was used to measure exchange rate volatility. The effect of exchange rate volatility on the foreign trade effect was analyzed with the MSIAH model. Findings: According to the results, it has been revealed that the effect of real exchange rate volatility on foreign trade differs in terms of economic expansion and contraction regimes, and real exchange rate volatility in the economic expansion regime has an increasing effect on imports. Originality/Value: The study is expected to draw more attention to agricultural problems in the recent period, and to contribute to the solution of problems related to agricultural foreign trade, especially in the exchange rate axis. © 2022, Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics.
