A study on photophysical properties of some Vitamin K3 derivatives
    (2004) Hakli O.; Karapire C.; Posokhov Y.; Içli S.
Photophysical properties of menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB), menadione nicotinamide bisulfite (MNB) and menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite (MPB) were studied in their aqueous solutions. They are oil-soluble vitamins and not naturally fluorescent, however, it is possible to gain fluorescent signal by the use of phosphate buffer solutions containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at optimum concentration. The quantum yields of fluorescence emission, Φ f, were measured as ∼10-4, 0.0085 and 0.053 for MSB, MNB, MPB, respectively. Fluorescence quenching with Co2+ ions yielded the quenching rates of 1.7×109, 4.6×1010, and 1.5×1010 M-1 s-1 for MSB, MNB and MPB, respectively. Calculated Gibbs free energy (Δ G) values (≤-5 kcal/mol) of the compounds suggest that electron transfer could be the reason of quenching with Co2+ ions. Studied derivatives were found to give two electrons. Equilibrium constants (Keq) derived from Δ G values pointed out strong association between the pairs of MSB, MNB and MPB complexes. They were irradiated by using not only artificial Xe lamp of fluorescence spectrophotometer, but also by using direct and concentrated sunlight and degradation (%), rate constant (kp) and half-lives (t1/2) were compared. Photodegradation (%) of Vitamin K3 derivatives varied depending on the irradiation source. Photostability tests pointed out MPB as the most stable derivative. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Optical and electrochemical properties of polyether derivatives of perylenediimides adsorbed on nanocrystalline metal oxide films
    (Elsevier, 2008) Kus M.; Hakli O.; Zafer C.; Varlikli C.; Demic S.; Özçelik S.; Icli S.
We report optical and electrochemical properties of polyether derivatives of perylenediimides (PDIs) thin films formed in various materials (semiconductor, insulator, amorphous and self-assembly). Perylenediimides adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO2 (NT) nanocrystalline alumina (NA), amorphous silicon (PS) and neat self-assemblied (SA) films were prepared and characterized based on spectroscopic, electrochemical, spectro-electrochemical techniques. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of PDIs in chloroform exhibit vibronic features. The fluorescence quantum yields (Φf) of PDIs with end amino substituents in chloroform solutions are over 0.95, while the quantum yield of triethoxyphenyl substituted PDI Φf value is 0.024 in solution. Optical spectroscopy proves that PDIs in metal oxide thin films form aggregated type complexes. An electrochromism, a color change from red to blue/violet, is observed on metal oxide films, that indicates existence of mono and dianion forms of PDIs. Reversibility of electrochemical reductions in NT film depends on the scanning rate. However, electrochromism in NA films is stable and reversibility is independent from scanning rate. Stable mono and diaionic species are formed on NA films. SA films show broad absorption peaks during the voltammetric scan. On the other hand, the first reduction onset potentials of PDIs are almost equal to the onset potential of capacitive current of TiO2 which lead to low efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Determination of pK a values of clinically important perfluorochemicals in nonaqueous media
    (2008) Hakli O.; Ertekin K.; Ozer M.S.; Aycan S.
Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are clinically and biotechnologically important species. In this work, the potentiometric titration method in nonaqueous media is proposed for the determination of acidity constant values of six different perfluorinated compounds. The saturated and nonsaturated perfluoroacids, perfluorocarnosine, and perfluoroalkyl-β-alanine were potentiometrically titrated in acetonitrile, N,N-dimethylformamide, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and pyridine with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. The half-neutralization potentials and acidity constants of PFCs have been calculated from the titration curves by using the computerized derivative method. Except for RF-Carnosine, all of the potentiometric titration curves of the PFCs exhibited one stoichiometric and well-defined endpoints in all of the solvents employed. The reproducibility and sensitivity of the method were evaluated. © 2008 MAIK Nauka.

Optical and photovoltaic properties of salicylaldimine-based azo ligands
    (2010) Dinçalp H.; Yavuz S.; Hakli O.; Zafer C.; Özsoy C.; Durucasu I.; Içli S.
A series of azo dyes containing salicylaldimine-based ligands as side chains were prepared and characterized. Absorption and emission data in five solvents of different polarities were studied. Photoirradiation studies under an oxygen atmosphere in water showed that the Schiff base side chains enhanced the photo-oxidative stability of the azo chromophore. The electrochemical properties of the dyes were investigated by a cyclic voltammetry. The synthesized salicylaldimine-based azo dyes gave two irreversible oxidation potentials. Complexation behavior of synthesized compounds with titanium (IV) ions was illustrated by the change in their absorption spectra. These ligands are appropriate sensitizers for anchoring to the TiO2 surface chemically in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) productions. Electron injection capacities to TiO2 and photovoltaic performance of the synthesized salicylaldimine-based azo dyes were tested with DSSC. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The conversion of low-rank Kilyos coal to nitrogeneous fertilizers
    (2011) Hakli O.; Dumanli A.G.; Nalbant A.; Okyay F.; Yürüm Y.
The aim of this work is to convert the low-rank Kilyos coal to a material that could be used as a nitrogenous fertilizer. Incorporation of nitrogen into this Kilyos coal was accomplished by oxidative ammoniation, which was a two-step process involving oxidation with nitric acid followed by a treatment by ammonia. The nitrogen content of the raw coal increased from 0.8% to 8.3-9.3% after ammoniation process. Trace element concentrations in the nitro-coal, humic acid, and oxy-ammoniated coal samples were within the acceptable ranges to be used as nitrogenous fertilizer. Therefore the oxy-ammoniated products could be considered as high-value fertilizers. Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
