Newborns with ALRI were screened for RSV infection by Respi-Strip®-test. Main outcome measures were the incidence of RSV-associated admissions in the NICUs and morbidity, mortality and epidemics results related to these admissions.Findings: The incidence of RSV infection was 1.24% (n: 250) and RSV infection constituted 19.6% of all ALRI hospitalizations, 226 newborns (90.4%) had community-acquired whereas 24 (9.6%) patients had nosocomial RSV infection in the NICUs. Of the 250 newborns, 171 (68.4%) were full-term infants, 183 (73.2%) had a BW >2500 g. RSV-related mortality rate was 1.2%. Four NICUs reported seven outbreaks on different months, which could be eliminated by palivizumab prophylaxis in one NICU.Conclusion: RSV-associated ALRI both in preterm and term infants accounts an important percent of hospitalizations in the season, and may threat other high-risk patients in the NICU. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.Item Examining the protective effects of acetyl l-carnitine on cisplatin-induced uterine tube toxicity(Taylor and Francis Ltd, 2016) Saribas G.S.; Erdogan D.; Goktas G.; Akyol S.N.; Hirfanoglu I.M.; Gurgen S.G.; Coskun N.; Ozogul C.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cisplatin and the protective role of acetyl l-carnitine against uterine tube toxicity. Twenty-four female Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: control group was injected with saline (control); group 2 was injected with acetyl l-carnitine; group 3 was injected with cisplatin; and group 4 was pre-treated with acetyl l-carnitine before cisplatin intraperitoneal injection. According to our results, a significant weight loss was observed in rats from group 3. The thickness of the wall and epithelium of uterine tube were decreased in group 3 rats. We elaborate the protein expression of caspase in epithelium and stroma by IHC. We found that the expression of caspase and the number of TUNEL-positive cells were increased in group 3 rats compared to the other groups. In our study, we showed the protective role of acetyl l-carnitine against uterine tube toxicity caused by cisplatin. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Item Clinical and Demographic Characteristics of Treatment Requiring Retinopathy of Prematurity in Big Premature Infants in Turkiye: Report No. 1 (BIG-ROP Study)(S. Methods: Data on the infants with a GA of 32-37 weeks and BW >1,500 g who developed treatment requiring ROP (TR-ROP) were collected retrospectively from the 33 ROP centres in Turkiye. GA, BW, type of hospital, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) level, presence of an ophthalmologist and neonatologist in the same hospital, length of stay in NICU, duration of oxygen therapy, comorbidities, type of ROP, and timing for TR-ROP development were analysed. Results: A total of366 infants were included in the study. Mean GA and BW were 33 1 weeks and 1,896 316 g, respectively. Duration of hospitalization was 3-4 weeks in 46.8% of them. The first ROP examination was performed at postnatal 4-5 weeks in 80.3% of infants, which was significantly later in level 2 and lower NICUs and non-university clinics. At the first ROP examination, any stage of ROP was detected in 90.9% and TR-ROP was detected in 15.3% of the infants. The mean postnatal week of TR-ROP development was 6.16 2.04. Conclusion: Routine ROP screening thresholds need to be expanded in hospitals with suboptimal NICU conditions considering the development of TRROP in more mature and heavier preterm infants. The first ROP examination should be earlier than the fourth postnatal week. 2024 S. Karger AG, Basel. © 2024 S. Karger AG. All rights reserved.
