Item Some ocular symptoms experienced by users of mobile phones(2008) Küçer N.This survey study was conducted, using a questionnaire, on 229 university students (181 women, 48 men) in Kocaeli, Turkey. Six ocular symptoms experienced during use of mobile phones were studied by means of the chi-square test with Yates correction. The studied symptoms were blurring of vision, redness of the eyes, vision disturbance, secretion of the eyes, inflammation in the eyes, and lachrymation of the eyes. A significant increase in blurring of vision (p 0.05) was reported by users of mobile phone possession 2 years compared to users of mobile phone possession 2 years. In users of mobile phones, women significantly (p 0.05) complained more often of inflammation in the eyes than men.Item The relationship between daily caffeine consumption and withdrawal symptoms: A questionnaire-based study(2010) Küçer N.Aim: To estimate daily caffeine intake among a group of university students at the Kocaeli Vocational School of Health Services in Turkey, and to determine the relationship between daily caffeine consumption and withdrawal symptoms. Materials and methods: This survey study was conducted using a questionnaire that was administered to 156 university students (129 females, 27 males) at the Kocaeli Vocational School of Health Services in Kocaeli, Turkey. The quantity of caffeine-containing products consumed was recorded on a daily basis, depending on the dietary habits of the consumer. The t test for differences between 2 proportions (using the normal approximation) was used for comparison of the frequency of complaints that began within 12-24 h of the cessation of caffeine consumption in relation to the quantities of daily caffeine consumption at P < 0.05. Results: Daily caffeine intake was estimated to range from 0 to 500 mg day-1. A significant increase in headache, fatigue, irritability, and sleepiness/drowsiness (P < 0.05) was reported by student's whose daily caffeine consumption was > 200 mg than by those whose daily caffeine consumption was < 200 mg. Conclusion: The data obtained show that Turkish university students consume similar amounts of caffeine as American, Canadian, Swedish, and British university students. The survey results show that there was a relationship between daily caffeine consumption and withdrawal symptoms (headache, fatigue, irritability, and sleepiness/drowsiness). © Tübi̇tak.Item Monte carlo computation of the energy deposited by protons in water, bone and adipose(2013) Küçer R.; Küçer N.; Türemen G.Protons are most suitable for treating deeply-seated tumors due to their unique depth dose distribution. The maximum dose of protons is a pronounced peak, called the Bragg peak, with zero dose behind the peak. The objective of radiation therapy with protons is to deliver the dose to the target volume by using this type of distribution. This is achieved with a finite number of Bragg peaks at the depth of the target volume. The location of the peak in terms of depth depends on the energy of the protons. Simulations are used to determine the depth dose distribution of proton beams passing through tissue, so it is important that experimental data agree with the simulation data. In this study, we used the FLUKA computer code to determine the correct position of the Bragg peak for proton beams passing through water, bone and adipose, and the results were compared with experimental data. © 2013 The Korean Physical Society.Item Self-reported symptoms associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields: A questionnaire study(2014) Küçer N.; Pamukçu T.In the last years, it has been discussed frequently whether there are any harmful effects of electromagnetic fields on human health. Electromagnetic fields are generated by several natural and man-made sources. Part of the electromagnetic spectrum called Radiofrequency is used in communication systems such as mobile (cellular) phone and computer. The aim of our study was to explore different self-reported symptoms that may be associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields. This survey study was conducted, using a questionnaire, on 350 people aged +9 years in Turkey. The chi-square test was used for data analysis. Self-reported symptoms were headache, vertigo/dizziness, fatigue, forgetfulness, sleep disturbance-insomnia, tension-anxiety, joint and bone pain, lacrimation of the eyes, hearing loss and tinnitus. As a result of the survey, the study has shown that users of mobile phone and computer more often complained of headache, joint and bone pain, hearing loss, vertigo/dizziness, tension-anxiety symptoms according to time of daily usage (p < 0.05). In users of mobile phone and computer, women significantly (p < 0.05) complained more often of headache, vertigo/dizziness, fatigue, forgetfulness and tension-anxiety than men. © 2014 Informa Healthcare USA, Inc. All rights reserved.Item Neutron shielding properties of concrete and ferro-boron(Polska Akademia Nauk, 2015) Sariyer D.; Küçer R.; Küçer N.The problem of shielding against high-energy neutrons has always attracted a great deal of attention. Neutron shielding requires slowing down energetic neutrons and absorbing with a shield material. Concrete is one of the best known materials for neutron shielding and ferro-boron is described as an alternative shielding material in this study. FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code was used for the application of shielding calculation. When the simulation results are compared, it is clear that ferro-boron is more effective in neutron shielding than the concrete.
