Item A scale development study: Primary Caregiver Burden Scale Individuals Receiving Hemodialysis TreatmentSahin, CK; Ceylan, H; Barutcu, CDIntroductionAs hemodialysis is a long-term treatment method requiring significant self-management skills, it affects both the patient and the caregiver in many ways. It is inevitable that changes in the burden perceived by the caregiver over time will not affect the patient's health care outcomes. The aim of this study was to develop an up-to-date scale by examining the psychometric properties of items created specifically for the care burden perceived by individuals who provide care for patients receiving hemodialysis treatment.MethodsThis study is a methodological study with the use of the COSMIN Checklist. The sample of the study included 404 individuals who were the primary caregivers of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Data were collected using descriptive characteristics form and the draft form of the Primary Caregiver Burden Scale Individuals Receiving Hemodialysis Treatment. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and predictive validity were used to evaluate validity. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient, item analysis, and test-retest method were employed to evaluate reliability.ResultsAccording to exploratory factor analysis, a scale structure with four subdimensions was determined, and goodness of fit was achieved using confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the final form of the scale consisting of 34 items was found to be 0.95 for the total scale, 0.93 for the self-management support subscale, 0.91 for the psychological support subscale, 0.91 for the caregiver symptom subscale, and 0.93 for the caregiver individual coping subscale.ConclusionThe Primary Caregiver Burden Scale Individuals Receiving Hemodialysis Treatment, which was found to meet the validity and reliability criteria, has a four-point Likert-type scoring structure, 34 items, and four subdimensions. It is thought that the scale can make significant contributions to the international literature if its validity and reliability are established with nursing practices and research.Item Examining the relationship between symptoms watched in lung cancer patients and illness perceptionUgur, O; Karadag, E; Mert, H; Sahin, CK; Gürel, TY; Karakus, HSObjective: To examine the relationship between the symptom experience of lung cancer patients and their illness perception of the disease. Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted from April to September 2015 at the Chemotherapy Treatment Centre of the Medicine Chest Diseases Clinic at the Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, and comprised lung cancer patients of either gender aged >18 years. Data was collected using a predesigned Patient Questionnaire as well as the standard Lung Cancer Symptom Scale, Illness Perception Questionnaire and Karnofsky Performance Scale. The patients' sociodemographic characteristics and data on their illness, the symptoms they experienced and the numerical and percentage distribution of the items on the illness perception scale, mean and standard deviation values were examined. Pearson Correlation analysis was used to examine the correlation between illness perception and Karnofsky Performance Scale scores and other variables. Results: Of the 105 patients, 86(81.9%) were males, 86(81.9%) were married, 49(46.7%) were elementary school graduates, 101(96.2%) were unemployed, and 95(90.5%) were receiving chemotherapy. The overall mean age of the sample was 61.43 +/- 8.24 years, the period since diagnosis was 11.38 +/- 17.84 months, and the duration of chemotherapy was 4.28 +/- 2.37 months. The mean symptom burden score was 22.75 +/- 10.85 and the Lung Cancer Symptom Scale score was 22.75 +/- 10.85. The mean score of the type of illness domain was 5.53 +/- 2.12. The overall mean global quality of life score was 64.30 +/- 12.60. Conclusions: As the symptom burden experienced by the lung cancer patients increased, their perception of the illness became more negative, and the longer the cyclical periods and the period of diagnosis, the patients' control over their illness decreased.Item The effect of WhatsApp-based training on nurses' genetic knowledge levels and awareness in Turkey: A quasi-experimental studyCeylan, H; Sahin, CK; Acar, CABackground: Genetics plays an important role in healthcare, and it is crucial for nurses to have a good understanding of this field. However, studies have shown that nurses often lack genetic knowledge and awareness. Furthermore, innovative educational approaches, such as WhatsApp-based education, have been proposed to address this knowledge gap, unlike traditional educational methods. These approaches use technology and interactive platforms to engage nurses in dynamic and immersive learning experiences. Aim: This study aimed to examine the impact of WhatsApp-based training on nurses' genetic knowledge levels and awareness. Method: A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design was used. A total of 121 registered nurses participated in a WhatsApp-based training program comprising presentations on genetic issues. Data were collected using Genetics and Genomics in Nursing Practice Survey. Values, means, percentage frequency distributions, and paired- sample t-tests were used. Results: In the pre-training period, the mean knowledge score of the nurse group was found to be 3.31 +/- 1.30 in the pre-training period and 9.58 +/- 1.73 in the post-training period. The applied WhatsApp-based training was found to have an effect size of 0.752 on the GGNPS (Genetics and Genomics in Nursing Practice Survey) knowledge score of the sample group (F = 374.882, p = 0.000). In the post-training period, there were significant increases in all the GGNPS items. Conclusion: WhatsApp-based educational programs have the potential to improve nurses' genetic knowledge and awareness. To fulfill the expanding needs of the nursing profession and to enhance patient care outcomes, this study emphasizes the importance of incorporating innovative educational tools into nursing education.
