Item Antimicrobial screening of some Turkish medicinal plantsOskay, M; Sari, DEthanol extracts of 19 Turkish medicinal plants, used in the traditional system of medicine, were investigated for their antimicrobial activity against 14 pathogenic bacterial species and a yeast, Candida albicans, using the agar well diffusion method. Anticandidal activity was detected in 10 plant extracts. Extracts of Eucalyptus camuldulensis ( leaves), Rosmarinus officinalis ( leaves), Ecballium elaterium ( leaves, fruits; 2: 1, v/v), Liquidambar orientalis ( leaves), Cornus sanguinea ( leaves, flowers, stems; 2: 1: 1, v/v/v), Vitis vinifera ( leaves, raw fruits, young branches; 2: 1: 1, v/v/v), Inula viscosa ( leaves), Hypericum perforatum ( leaves, flowers, stems; 2: 1: 1, v/v/v), and Punica granatum ( leaves, flowers; ( 2: 1, v/v) showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with inhibition zones ranging from 4 to 34 mm. The most resistant organisms were Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6683, and Enterobacter faecalis ATCC 29212, and the most susceptible species were Proteus vulgaris ATCC 6997, Salmonella typhimurium CCM 5445, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, and Serratia marcescens CCM 583, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration ( MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration ( MBC) were determined for the seven highly active plants that showed antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 95047 ( MRSA), E. coli, and C. albicans. The MICs of active extracts ranged from 8 to 14.2 mg/mL while the MBCs were 14.2 to 24.4 mg/mL.Item A comparative study of antimicrobial activity using well and disk diffusion method on Asphodelus aestivus (Liliaceae)Oskay, M; Aktas, K; Sari, D; Azeri, CPlant parts were powdered, extracted in a Soxhlet extractor with n-butanol and ethanol (60-80 degrees C) for 12 h, filtered using Whatman filter paper no:4 and the filtrate was then evaporated at 70 degrees C. For determination of antimicrobial activity, different concentrations of crude extract tested against bacteria and yeasts by both well and disk diffusion method. Results showed that the A phodelus aestivus extract (Flower, fruits and whole plant) exhibited antimicrobial activity ranging from 2 to 15 mm. Extract obtained with ethanol was showed more inhibision. According to same concentrations of crude extract used with well diffusion method results were a bit higher than disc diffusion results. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determined on susceptible microorganisms by macrobroth dilution method, and MIC values were shown from 36 to 90 mg/mL. Also some commercial antibiotics were used to determine sensitivity of the test microorganisms and comparison.Item The Effect of Cryotherapy on the Prevention of Oral Mucositis and on the Oral pH Value in Multiple Myeloma Patients Undergoing Autologous Stem Cell TransplantationBaysal, E; Sari, D; Vural, F; Cagirgan, S; Saydam, G; Töbü, M; Sahin, F; Soyer, N; Gediz, F; Acarlar, C; Timur, E; Güngör, AObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy on the prevention of oral mucositis (OM) and on the oral pH value in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation. Data Sources: This nonrandomized controlled clinical trial was carried out in Bone Marrow Transplant Centers of three hospitals with total 32 patients. In addition to standard oral care, a total of 80 minutes of cryotherapy was applied to the experimental group. OM was assessed according to the World Health Organization's Oral Toxicity Scale before chemotherapy and for 21 days after chemotherapy (every day in the first 14 days, then every other day until the 21st day [if not discharged]). Conclusion: According to the findings, cryotherapy did not change the incidence of oral OM, and neither affected the severity of nor decreased the duration of it. Oral pH value was found to be significantly different between the patient groups only before and 1 day after chemotherapy. Implications for Nursing Practice: Cryotherapy is an inexpensive, easy-to-use method with no side effects; it would be beneficial to continue cryotherapy to prevent the development of OM in patients with cancer receiving drugs with a short half-life such as melphalan. It is also recommended to conduct further studies with different chemotherapy drugs with short half-lives to determine its effect on the prevention of OM development. (c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.Item Investigation of Turkish nurses frequency and knowledge of administration of intramuscular injections to the ventrogluteal site: Results from questionnairesSari, D; Sahin, M; Yasar, E; Taskiran, N; Telli, SBackground: Intramuscular injection is important in the administration of parenteral medication and is a frequently-performed nursing responsibility. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the frequency of use of the ventrogluteal site and the level of nurses' knowledge of administering an intramuscular injection to this site. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted of nurses working in four hospitals (n = 362). Data collection tools included a 12 item sociodemographic questionnaire and a 24 item questionnaire on knowledge of the ventrogluteal site for intramuscular injection. Findings: 17.1% of participants reported using the VG site frequently in intramuscular injections. On the other hand, 35.9% reported that they do not use the VG site in intramuscular injections just because they are not used to giving injections on this site. Level of knowledge of ventrogluteal site was also limited with the mean score of correct answers from 24 questions being 14.37. Conclusion: It was found in the study that nurses' knowledge of the ventrogluteal site was limited, and they are not preferentially using the ventrogluteal site for intramuscular injections to adults even though it is recommended in recent nursing literature.
