ADVERTISING EVENTS: CONTENT AND SEMIOTIC ANALYSES OF CANNES FILM FESTIVAL POSTERS
    Sel, ZG; Aktas, G
The visual, textual, and symbolic elements used in printed advertising can help target markets in that these appeal to their expectations and needs. This research investigates the historical evolution of printed advertising, namely posters, for the Cannes Film Festival. It aims to understand how the design and content of these posters have altered over time and what contextual and symbolic meanings could be derived from their analysis. To this end, the document archive of the Cannes Film Festival, one of the major international film festivals of Europe, was accessed and posters used between 1946 and 2016 were analyzed through a reliance on content and semiotic analyses. The findings of these analyses offer insight into how marketing strategies and efforts of organizers have changed over time, from the early days of the establishment to the current prominent status of the festival as one of the leading arts festivals in Europe. The findings also reveal that the festival has been emphasizing the visual more than the textual elements in its posters with the branding efforts progressively shifting towards the nearly exclusive reliance on visual elements over time, especially since the year 2000 onwards. Interestingly, over time the posters have also become art pieces in their own right through contribution of visuals by various artists.

THE MANAGEMENT OF A GOVERNMENT-HOSTED FESTIVAL FROM STAKEHOLDERS' PERSPECTIVES: INTERNATIONAL MANISA MESIR PASTE FESTIVAL1
Tepeci, M; Isçi, C; Sel, ZG; Kirova, S
The purpose of this study is to determine how a local government hosts and manages a large-scale festival from the perspectives of stakeholders, including the organizing committee members, government entities, academics, businesses, tourists, and residents. The study investigates the way International Manisa Mesir Paste Festival (hereafter Mesir Festival) is managed and detects how different entities explain the reasons of the success or failure of the public festival as well as providing recommendations to increase success. The research applies a qualitative method to explore the determinants of the success of this festival organization. In this study, researchers conducted 22 semi -structured interviews with different stakeholders. The findings reveal that public administration is prevalent and dominant in deciding the content and administration of the Mesir Festival. Three significant main themes were determined: shortcomings, benefits or contributions, and recommendations. The results indicate that the festival did not achieve any notable economic, social, or cultural gains, thus, shortcomings of the festival exceed its benefits. This research provides valuable insights into the study of festival management by extending our understandings of government-hosted and managed festivals.

Effects of crisis on crisis management practices: a case from Turkish tourism enterprises
    Ertas, M; Sel, ZG; Kirlar-Can, B; Tütüncü, Ö
Crises are broadly thought to damage the tourism industry by decreasing tourism revenues due to reduced inbound tourism. This study investigated the negative short-term effects of crises on the crisis management practices of tourism enterprises in Turkey following terrorist attacks between 2015 and 2016, political tensions with the Russian Federation after a military aircraft was shot down in 2015, and the attempted coup in 2016. 219 valid questionnaires were obtained from representatives and managers of hotels, travel companies, airlines, and other tourism enterprises at the 10th Tourism Fair and Congress, Travel Turkey. The findings reveal that the three distinct but interrelated crises all significantly affected tourism enterprises in the short-term. These effects did not differ regarding type of enterprise or years of operation. The stressful working environment and increased costs mostly affected maintenance, human resources, government assistance, promotion, and product and pricing strategies.
