Item Turkish validity and reliability of children's environmental health knowledge and skills questionnaires for nursing studentsSimsek, HG; Daghan, SBackgroundA constantly changing and polluted environment can negatively affect children's health. Nursing education should enable the training of future nurses who are fully equipped to protect and improve children's health. In this respect, it is necessary to evaluate the knowledge and skills of nurse candidates. To examine the psychometric properties of the Children's Environmental Health Knowledge (ChEHK-Q) and Skills (ChEHS-Q) Questionnaire among Turkish-speaking nursing students.MethodsThis study employed a methodological method. An online survey was administered to 300 students in a nursing department in western T & uuml;rkiye in 2021. Expert opinions were obtained for content and language validity. The validity of the scales was analysed via Rasch measurement theory, and whether the necessary preconditions for the analysis (the item function difference, local independence, reliability, and unidimensionality) were met was checked. Then, the item difficulty, person ability, and response threshold value ranking data were obtained. SPSS 25.0 software, LISREL Vrs. 8.80 program and Winsteps 3.92.1 Version program were used.ResultsThe content validity indices of both scales were above 0.80. Only item 12 of the ChEHS-Q was removed because it did not provide cultural appropriateness. Both scales met the Rasch measurement theory assumption and had model fit. The ChEHK-Q infit values ranged from 0.13 to 1.07, and the outfit values ranged from 0.88 to 1.17. The ChEHS-Q infit values ranged from 0.82 to 1.19, and the outfit values ranged from 0.86 to 1.19.ConclusionsBoth questionnaires were found to be valid and reliable instruments in the Turkish language. Scales can provide ideas for shaping the nursing education curriculum in T & uuml;rkiye. In this way, by determining which subjects are deficient, education programs can be arranged to eliminate these deficiencies. Nurses' awareness of environmental health is also important in improving public health. Graduating nurses can inform families by identifying environmental risks and contribute to the creation of healthy living conditions. In addition, it can be used in clinical practice (public health nursing, etc.) and national and international research (randomized controlled trials evaluating planned educational activities).Clinical Trial NumberNot applicable.Item The level of recognition of the symptoms of violence against women by senior year nursing and midwifery studentsSimsek, HG; Ardahan, MBackground: Violence against women maintains its importance. Nursing and midwifery students should be able to identify symptoms of violence against women. Healthcare providers have received insufficient education, either before or after graduation, for identifying violence cases and for dealing with interfamilial violence against women. Aims: This study is conducted to identify nursing and midwifery students' ability to recognise symptoms of violence against women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included nursing and midwifery students attending the Ege University, School of Nursing, the Celal Bayar University, Health School of Higher Education and Health School of Izmir Ataturk (N = 557). The convenience sampling method was used. There were 114 students who declined to participate in this study as they did not want to answer questions about violence (n = 443). Results: It was determined that 94.6% of the students were knowledgeable about violence against women. The scores obtained by students from the physical symptom sub-dimension were 8.35 +/- 1.65 and from the emotional symptom sub-dimension were 11.97 +/- 2.19. The total scores obtained from the scale were 20.32 +/- 3.14. A statistically significant difference was found between students' age, gender, nursing or midwifery section, being subjected to violence, receiving violence awareness training and reporting violence in the sub-dimensions and total scores of the scale (p < 0.05). Impact Statement: Having knowledge and self-confidence increased students' awareness in identifying the symptoms of violence. Conclusion: The participant's limited ability to identify symptoms of violence is thought to result from inadequate emphasis on violence issues in the curricula. Greater emphasis should be placed on violence issues in curricula to guide students as future health care professionals.Item EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HOSPITAL RECYCLING PROGRAM FOR IMPROVING NURSES' RECYCLING BEHAVIOURSSimsek, HG; Özsoy, SAPurpose: To evaluate the effect of the Hospital Recycling Program conducted for the wastes generated during the practice of nurses on the recycling behavior and waste amounts of the nurses. Material and Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group was conducted with 64 nurses. Data were collected by the Nurse Descriptive Characteristics Form, Recycling Scale for Sustainable Hospital, and Unit Waste Registration Form. The Hospital Recycling Program based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour was applied to the intervention group. Results: The Hospital Recycling Program had a positive effect on attitudes/behavior intention, and recycling behavior scores of nurses in the intervention group; the amount of recyclable waste was significantly increased compared to the control group (p<0.05). It was found that perceived behavioral controls of all nurses affected the intention to recycle and the Hospital Recycling Program had a significant effect on the attitudes of the nurses in the intervention group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The Hospital Recycling Program based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour has a positive effect on the recycling behaviors of the nurses and the amount of recyclable waste.Item Years Devoted to Public Health Nursing: World Examples of Public Health Nursing PioneersSimsek, HG; Temel, ABCommunity health care needs that have emerged from health problems due to social, political, and environmental factors have increased the importance and development of public health nursing. As the pioneers of the creation of contemporary public health nursing implementations, the acknowledgment of the practices of public health nurses is crucial for future planning in this field. In Turkish nursing literature, very few studies have addressed these issues. This study aims to introduce the public health nurses that have influenced public health nursing and its development through history. Within the scope of the biographies of pioneering public health nurses, features such as the countries they lived in; the nursing education they received; their reasons for choosing nursing; their nursing practice; the position of women at the time; the social, economic conditions, and health problems of the time; the people they were influenced by and those they influenced; and the support they received or the barriers they faced were reviewed from a historical perspective.Item Sustainable development awareness and related factors in nursing students: A correlational descriptive studySimsek, HG; Erkin, ÖAim: To determine the sustainable development awareness and related factors in nursing students. Background: Sustainable Development Goals have an important place in nursing education. While the Sustainable Development Goals set out the determinants of health, they also provide guidance to nurses for their in-terventions. In this respect, it is important to determine the awareness of nursing students and to address this issue in nursing education. Design: Correlational descriptive study. Methods: A total of 199 Turkish nursing students were included in the study. Data were collected online through Google Forms between March and June 2021 by the demographic characteristics form and Sustainable Development Awareness Scale . Results: The mean age of the nursing students in the study was 20.18 ( & PLUSMN; 1.27) years. Students' mean score from the scale was 164.41 ( & PLUSMN; 15.13) points. While 63.8 % of the participants stated not hearing of the sustainable development concept before and 77.4 % of them did not know about Sustainable Development Goals. The social sustainability, environmental sustainability and total scale scores were determined to show significant differences between the genders and female participants got higher scores compared with males. Participants over the age of twenty were found to score significantly higher in the environmental sustainability sub-dimension. Ac-cording to the status of thinking that there is a relationship between sustainable development and nursing, the environmental sustainability scores of the students were found to differ statistically. According to the status of wanting to get more information about Sustainable Development Goals, the economic sustainability, environ-mental sustainability and total scale scores of the students were found to show a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The sustainable development awareness levels of nursing students were found to be higher than the average. While more than half of the participants stated not hearing of the sustainable development concept before and three quarters of them did not know about Sustainable Development Goals. In this study, the scale total or sub-dimension scores were found to show significant differences according to gender, age, the status of thinking that there is a relationship between sustainable development and nursing and the status of wanting to get more information about Sustainable Development Goals. To mobilize future nurses, it can be suggested that SDGs be added to the curriculum, considering their knowledge and willingness.Item Turkish Validity and Reliability Study of the Sustainability Attitudes in Nursing Survey 2Simsek, HGPurpose: It is important to examine the attitudes of future nurses toward adopting a sustainability approach in their nursing practice. This study aimed to test the Sustainability Attitudes in Nursing Survey 2 psychometrically. Methods: The methodological, descriptive study was conducted in November 2019 on nursing students (n = 286) at a university in T & uuml;rkiye. Data were analyzed for reliability and validity tests. Statistics of the linguistic content validity analysis and exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis were performed to determine the scale's validity. Cronbach Alpha coefficient, floor and ceiling impacts, Tukey's test, and Hotelling's T-2 test, test-retest reliability were determined for the scale's reliability. Results: The content validity index of the scale, which consists of five items and one dimension, is .98. Factor loadings were above .30, all the fit indices were >.95, chi(2)/df was 1.58, and the root means square error of approximation was .045. Cronbach's alpha was .75. The floor and ceiling impacts were 0.0% and 3.1%. In Tukey's test, F was 3.43 and p was .064. In Hotelling's T-2 test, Hotelling's T-2 was 265.59 and F was 65.68 (p < .001). Item-total correlation coefficients were between .37 and .63. The test-retest correlation coefficient was .39. Conclusion: The scale is a valid and reliable instrument in the Turkish language. It is advised to use the scale in determining attitudes towards sustainability among nursing students, evaluating the effectiveness of training, and taking student opinions in curriculum revisions. Also, the study allowed cross-country comparisons, and it is thought that it can guide studies on the inclusion of sustainability principles in nursing practices.
