Item Ecological quality status of the Turkish coastal waters by using a marine macrophytic biotic index (EEI-c)Taskin, E; Tan, IBH; Cakir, M; Sungur, O; Minareci, O; Minareci, E; Atabay, HThe present study includes the results of the second benthic macrophytes' monitoring period of a survey of ecological status from the Turkish coasts. The biotic index Ecological Evaluation Index (EEI-c) was used to assess the ecological status classes (ESC) and MA-LUSI the anthropogenic pressures. Sampling was made by the quadrat (20 x 20 cm) method, and the samples were collected from 93 sites in Turkish coastal waters between 2017 and 2019. In total, 240 taxa were found in the Turkish marine waters. Forty sites were classified into High ESC, 24 sites into Good, 12 sites into Moderate, 13 sites into Poor, and 4 sites into Bad ESC. This species, with a distribution primarily in the Mediterranean Sea, was collected growing epilithically in the midlittoral zone (-0.5 in) in March 2007 from Ayvalik (Aegean Sea, Turkey).Item Ecological Status of the Coastal Waters of Ayvalik (Aegean Sea, Turkey) Assessed Using the EEI MethodTaskin, EMacroalgae and angiosperms are proposed as biological elements to assess the ecological status of coastal waters and transitional systems by the EU Water Framework Directive. Recently, the Ecological Evaluation Index (EEI) was intercalibrated in the Mediterranean eco-region by the Mediterranean Geographic Intercalibration Group (MEDGIG). In the present paper, the EEI was tested at two different localities, the inner and outer bays of the city Ayvalik located on the Aegean coast of Turkey. The study shows a high ecological quality for the outer bay whereas, the inner bay is of moderate quality.Item First report of the North Atlantic myrionematoid brown alga Ulonema rhizophorum Foslie (Phaeophyceae, Chordariaceae) in the Mediterranean SeaTaskin, EThe myrionematoid brown alga Ulonema rhizophorum Foslie (Phaeophyceae, Chordariaceae) is reported for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. This species was collected growing as an epiphyte on Ulva sp. from the Dardanelles (Sea of Marmara, Turkey) in the midlittoral zone. Ulonema rhizophorum is characterized by downwardly produced rhizoids from the basal system. A key to the Mediterranean related genera of Ulonema is provided.Item Marine benthic Cyanobacteria in Northern Cyprus (Eastern Mediterranean Sea)Ulcay, S; Taskin, E; Kurt, O; Öztürk, MIn this paper, 47 taxa (15 Chroococcales, 20 Oscillatoriales, and 12 Nostocales) of Cyanobacteria that were collected along the coasts of Northern Cyprus (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) are reported. Aphanocapsa litoralis (Hansgirg) Komarek & Anagnostidis, Coelosphaerium minutissimum Lemmermann, Chroococcus cf. turicensis (Nageli) Hansgirg, Chroococcus varius A. Braun, Spirulina tenerrima Kutzing ex Gomont, Calothrix fuscoviolacea P.L.Crouan & H.M.Crouan ex Bornet & Flahault, Rivularia nitida C. Agardh ex Bornet & Flahault, and Scytonematopsis pilosa (Harvey ex Bornet & Flahault) I. Umezaki & M. Watanabe are recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea, and 35 taxa are also recorded for the first time from Northern Cyprus. Data are also provided concerning the geographical, morphological, and ecological distribution of each species. Sampling was based on 4 different localities (Korucam, Girne, Dip Karpaz, and Gazimagusa) in the Northern Cyprus marine ecosystem supralittoral zone at a depth of 30-35 m in the infralittoral zone between 2006 and 2008.Item First report of Corynophlaea crispa (Harvey) Kuckuck (Phaeophyceae, Corynophlaeaceae) in the Mediterranean SeaTaskin, ECorynophlaea crispa (Harvey) Kuckuck (Phaeophyceae, Corynophlaeaceae) is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. This species was collected growing as an epiphyte on Cystoseira barbata from the Candarli Bay (Aegean Sea, Turkey) in the midlittoral zone (0.5-1.0 m). Its recurved paraphyses, consisting of 9-18 cells, and the sole production of unilocular sporangia were observed. Hitherto it was known only from the northeastern Atlantic.Item The marine brown algae of the East Aegean Sea and Dardanelles - I. Ectocarpaceae, Pylaiellaceae, Chordariaceae, Elachistaceae and GiraudiaceaeTaskin, E; Ozturk, MIn this paper 33 species of brown algae (Ectocarpaceae 20, Pylaiellaceae 1, Chordariaceae 9, Elachistaceae 2 and 1 Giraudiaceae) collected along the coast of the East Aegean Sea, Turkey, are reported. Six species are new to Turkey: Hincksia ovata (Kjellman) P.C. Silva, Phaeostroma bertholdii Kuckuck, Streblonema cf. parasiticum (Sauvageau) De Toni, Elachista fucicola (Velley) Areschoug, Spongonema tomentosum (Hudson) Kutzing, Cladosiphon irregularis (Sauvageau) Kylin. The first four of them are also new to the Aegean Sea. Data concerning geographical distribution, morphology and ecology of each species are also given.Item Taxonomy and Description of the Three Marine Cyanophycean Algae from the Mediterranean SeaKurt, O; Ulcay, S; Taskin, E; Öztürk, MIn the present study, three marine Cyanophycean species from the Mediterranean are reported and described. These species were: Phormidium boryanum (Bory ex Gomont) Anagnostidis and Komarck (1988), Oscillatoria sancta f. caldariorum (Hauck) Lagerheim and Elenkin (1949) and Lyngbya anomala (C.B.Rao) Umezaki and Watanabe (1994), all members of the Oscillatoriales. The samples were collected from mid-littoral zones of Dikili Gulf (Aegean Sea, Turkey). The samples were kept in jars, fixed in 4% formaldehyde-sea water. The algae were identified under the microscope, mounted directly between lam and lamel. Current literature sources were used for the determinations. The photographs were taken using normal microphotography techniques. Data concerning distribution, morphology and ecology of each species are also given.Item First reports of five marine algae from TurkeyTaskin, EIn this paper, five marine macroalgal taxa are reported for the first time from Turkey [Dardanelles (Sea of Marmara), Ayvalik (Aegean coast) and Iskenderun Bay (Mediterranean coast)]: Myrionema conchicola, Compsonema minutum, Microspongium gelatinosum, Lomentaria ercegovicii and Osmundea pelagiensis. Data concerning geographical distribution, morphology, illustrations and ecology of each species are given.Item Marine macroalgal flora on the Aegean and the Levantine coasts of TurkeyTaskin, E; Çakir, MThis study contains an updated checklist and new collections of marine algae from the coasts of the Aegean Sea and the Levantine Sea of Turkey. A total of 573 marine algal taxa at specific and infraspecific levels (137 brown algae, 318 red algae, and 118 green algae) are reported, 32 of which are regarded as endangered or threatened macroalgae (four green algae, nine red algae, and 19 brown algae). Of these, 36 taxa (10 brown algae, 17 red algae, nine green algae) are recorded as alien on the Aegean and Levantine coasts. In the present study, the red alga Palisada maris-rubri is reported for the first time from the eastern Mediterranean Sea for Turkey. In Iskenderun Bay, species were sampled from 1 m depth on a volcanic rock in May 2016.Item Ecological quality status of the Turkish coastal waters by using marine macrophytes (macroalgae and angiosperms)Taskin, E; Tan, I; Minareci, E; Minareci, O; Çakir, M; Polat-Beken, ÇMarine macrophytes (macroalgae and angiosperms) were defined as one of the biological quality elements to assess the ecological quality status of transitional and coastal waters by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC). In the present study, the Ecological Evaluation Index (EEI-c) was tested to assess the anthropogenic impact by using marine benthic macrophytes (macroalgae and angiosperms) and pressures by using MA-LUSI in the Turkish marine waters. Macrophyte samples were collected from 56 stations on the coasts of Turkey (at 17 Black Sea, 15 Marmara Sea, 13 Aegean Sea and 11 Mediterranean coastal water bodies) in the summer period between 2014 and 2016. In total, 209 marine macrophytes (macroalgae and angiosperms) taxa were found in all stations. The study revealed high ecological status class for 15 sites, good for 21 sites, moderate for 6 sites, poor for 10 sites, and bad for 4 sites. The MA-LUSI index was tested from the Corine land cover map which affects 1.5 km buffer zone around the sampling sites. The relationship between the pressure index MA-LUSI and EEI-ceqr (eqr: ecological quality ratio) was also tested, and a negative linear relationship was found between MA-LUSI and EEI-ceqr in the Turkish sites. The present study supports the use of the EEI-c index for ecological quality state classification in a wide area of Turkish coastal waters.Item PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF SEA WATER AT TURKEY COASTSMinareci, O; Taskin, E; Minareci, EIn this study, it is aimed to determine some physico-chemical parameters on the Turkey coasts. pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, phosphate and ammonium nitrogen parameters were determined. The sampling were carried out from 56 points (17 The Black Sea, 15 The Marmara Sea, 13 The Aegean Sea and 11 The Mediterranean), once a year, during the summer-fall period, between 2014-2016. In the Black Sea, mean pH 8.25, temperature 26.53 degrees C, salinity 16.84 parts per thousand, dissolved oxygen 5.45 mg/L, turbidity 2.77 mg/L, conductivity 26574 mu S/cm, phosphate 10.87 mu g/L and ammonium nitrogen 0.046 mg/L; in the Marmara Sea, mean pH 8.18, temperature 25.56 degrees C, salinity 22.27 parts per thousand, dissolved oxygen 5.56 mg/L, turbidity 1.15 mg/L, conductivity 34977 mu S/cm, phosphate 11.14 mu g/L and ammonium nitrogen 0.112 mg/L; in the Aegean Sea, mean pH 8.01, temperature 26.87 degrees C, salinity 35.69 parts per thousand, dissolved oxygen 5.40 mg/L, turbidity 2.08 mg/L, conductivity 53867 mu S/cm, phosphate 9.72 mu g/L and ammonium nitrogen 0.023 mg/L; in the Mediterranean, mean pH 7.87, temperature 28.58 degrees C, salinity 36.01 parts per thousand, dissolved oxygen 4.61 mg/L, turbidity 0.55 mg/L, conductivity 54259 mu S/cm, phosphate 7.90 mu g/L and ammonium nitrogen 0.024 mg/L were found.Item The marine brown algae of the east Aegean sea and Dardanelles II. Ectocarpaceae, Chordariaceae and ScytosiphonaceaeTaskin, EThis paper reports 31 species of Phaeophyceae (1 Ectocarpaceae, 24 Chordariaceae and 6 Scytosiphonaceae) from the Dardanelles and the Aegean coast of Turkey. Four species are reported for the first time from the coast of Turkey and the Aegean Sea: Kuckuckia spinosa (Kutzing) Kornmann, Botrytella micromora Bory, Petrospongium sp. and Hecatonema terminate (Kutzing) Kylin. Notes on geographical distribution, morphology and ecology are given for each species.Item INHIBITORY EXTRACTS OF SOME BROWN ALGAE FROM TURKEYTaskin, E; Taskin, E; Çinar, E; Öztürk, MItem ENHANCEMENT OF SOLID STATE FERMENTATION FOR PRODUCTION OF PENICILLIN G ON SUGAR BEET PULPTaskin, E; Eltem, R; Soyak, EIn this study, two local strains of Penicillium chrysogenum named EGEK458 and EGEK469 were selected for enhancement of Penicillin G (PenG) production under solid state fermentation (SSF) conditions. These two strains were selected among seven strains according to their fermentation yields for PenG production during previous tests under submerged fermentation conditions. Sugar beet pulp, an agro-industrial residue of the sugar industry, was used as an inert support for the first time in PenG production under SSF. In order to enhance the production of PenG, two points of moisture level and three concentration values of nutrients (impregnated in solid support), which are the key parameters in production of PenG, were compared. As the yields from solid and submerged fermentation were compared, 570U/g of PenG - almost 15 times higher quantities of its production vs. submerged conditions - were obtained under SSF conditions in 50 hours by the strain EGEK458. The conditions for the enhanced production of PenG were 65% moisture content with a four-fold concentrated nutrients impregnated solid support.
