    Contribution to the pselaphinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) of Anatolia, Turkey

    As result of a short expedition during early spring in Western Turkey (Izmir, Aydin, Manisa and Denizli provinces), two new species, Bythinus beshkovi sp. n. and Bryaxis pumilus sp. n., have been discovered and are described here; the aedeagus and first two basal antennomeres of Bryaxis anatolicus Saulcy, 1878 are illustrated; faunistical data for 16 species are given, and photos of the habitus of the genera Namunia and Tremissus are provided for the first time.

    Correction of the Type Locality of Rhagodes Caucasicus

    The type locality of Rhagodes caucasicusBirula, 1905 is corrected and identified as Tuzluca (Kul'p), Iğdir Province, eastern Turkey instead of Armenia. A new record for the Iranian solpugid fauna is also reported: Rhagodes caucasicusBirula, 1905 from Zanjan Province, northwestern Iran.     Scorpion-related cardiomyopathy and acute pulmonary edema in a child who is stung by Leiurus abdullahbayrami

    Venom of Leiurus abdullahbayrami (Scorpiones: Buthidae) is an extremely toxic one and it stimulates voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels. In case of a stung by this scorpion; excessive catecholamine release occur and it impairs left ventricle contractility and consequently a heart failure occurs (scorpion sting-related cardiomyopathy). In addition to this cardiac-induced acute pulmonary, edema may occur in severe cases too. An 11-year-old male child who was stung by a scorpion (species: Leiurus abdullahbayrami) consulted to the Emergency Room. Even after 7 h of scorpion envenomation he was confused and having hallucinations. Besides he was dyspneic, tachycardic, hypotensive and got worse in overall situation due to cardiogenic pulmonary edema. These clinical findings are concordant with the Level III scorpion envenomation (major systemic manifestations). Positive inotropic agents, diuretics and antiagregant agents used on supportive therapy in his treatment. After 2 weeks he get recovered and discharged from the pediatric intensive care unit. This research is conducted by thinking emergency physicians should learn that Leiurus abdullahbayrami envenomation can cause scorpion-related cardiomyopathy and acute pulmonary edema especially in children. © 2017 The Emergency Medicine Association of Turkey

    Redescription of Dysdera sultani (Araneae: Dysderidae) with the first description of the female

    Karyotypes of Southeastern Turkish Scorpions Hottentotta saulcyi and Buthacus macrocentrus (Scorpiones: Buthidae)

    Objective: The species Hottentotta saulcyi is widely distributed from Mardin to Hakkari while the distribution of Buthacus macrocentrus is limited to the south-east of Turkey (only Şanlıurfa). The aim of this study is to analyze the cytogenetic structure of Hottentotta saulcyi and Buthacus macrocentrus. Materials and Methods: The specimens were collected during the night from Şırnak and Şanlıurfa using a UV lamp. The male Hottentotta saulcyi were collected from Şırnak and male and female Buthacus macrocentrus from Şanlıurfa. Chromosome preparations were made using cells from the male testes and the female ovariuteri of the species studied. Chromosome preparations were made using the classical spreading method. Results: The diploid chromosome number for Hottentotta saulcyi was 2n=14, and 2n=28 for Buthacus macrocentrus. Conclusion: The karyotypes of Hottentotta saulcyi and Buthacus macrocentrus have been presented for the first time. Both analyzed species have holocentric chromosomes that gradually decrease in size. Quadrivalent and hexavalent were observed during the first meiotic division in males of Buthacus macrocentrus. © Copyright 2019 by The Istanbul University Faculty of Science.

    Evolutionary dynamics of rDNA clusters on chromosomes of buthid scorpions (Chelicerata: Arachnida)

    We examined the distribution of genes for major ribosomal RNAs (rDNA) on holokinetic chromosomes of 74 species belonging to 19 genera of scorpions from the family Buthidae using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Our analysis revealed differences between the two main evolutionary lineages within the family. The genera belonging to the 'Buthus group', with a proposed Laurasian origin, possess one pair of rDNA mainly in an interstitial position, with the only exceptions being the terminal location found in some Hottentotta and Buthacus species, possibly as a result of chromosome fissions. All the remaining buthid 'groups' possess rDNA found strictly in a terminal position. However, the number of signals may increase from an ancestral state of one pair of rDNA loci to up to seven signals in Reddyanus ceylonensis Kovarík et al., 2016. Despite the differences in evolutionary dynamics of the rDNA clusters between the 'Buthus group' and other lineages investigated, we found a high incidence of reciprocal translocations and presence of multivalent associations during meiosis in the majority of the genera studied. These phenomena seem to be typical for the whole family Buthidae. © 2020 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2020.

    The lethality, histological, haematological and biochemical alterations in mice envenomated with Aegaeobuthus nigrocinctus venom

    There is currently no data regarding the toxicity or the in vivo effects of the venom the Aegaeobuthus nigrocinctus species, since it has not been studied thus far according to the best of our knowledge. In the present study, and for the first time, the median lethal dose, the in vivo toxic effects, the histological changes in some of the vital organs were all determined as well as an assessment was made of the histological, biochemical and haematological changes which were caused by the venom injected in mice. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the scorpion venom for mice was found to be 0.38 mg/kg in terms of body weight. The results of the study show that the A. nigrocintus is a potentially lethal scorpion. The evidence related to the venom indicated that it could cause tissue injury in some vital organs. In conclusion, this scorpion venom could cause significant medical complications, and may lead to death, regarding at-risk patients. Therefore, health professionals should be aware of the various scorpion species in their regions and should follow current medical approaches concerning scorpion envenomation. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

    Checklist and review of the scorpion fauna of Iraq (Arachnida: Scorpiones)

    The knowledge of the scorpion fauna of Iraq and its geographical distribution is limited. Our review reveals the presence in this country of 19 species belonging to 13 genera and five families: Buthidae, Euscorpiidae, Hemiscorpiidae, Iuridae and Scorpionidae. Buthidae is, with nine genera and 15 species, the richest and the most diverse family in Iraq. Synonymies of several scorpion species were reviewed. Due to erroneous identifications and locality data, we exclude 18 species of scorpion from the list of the Iraqi fauna. The geographical distribution of Iraqi scorpions is discussed. Compsobuthus iraqensisAl-Azawii, 2018, syn. nov. is synonymized with C. matthiesseni (Birula, 1905). © 2021 Arachnologische Gesellschaft e.V.. All rights reserved.
