Newborns with ALRI were screened for RSV infection by Respi-Strip®-test. Main outcome measures were the incidence of RSV-associated admissions in the NICUs and morbidity, mortality and epidemics results related to these admissions.Findings: The incidence of RSV infection was 1.24% (n: 250) and RSV infection constituted 19.6% of all ALRI hospitalizations, 226 newborns (90.4%) had community-acquired whereas 24 (9.6%) patients had nosocomial RSV infection in the NICUs. Of the 250 newborns, 171 (68.4%) were full-term infants, 183 (73.2%) had a BW >2500 g. RSV-related mortality rate was 1.2%. Four NICUs reported seven outbreaks on different months, which could be eliminated by palivizumab prophylaxis in one NICU.Conclusion: RSV-associated ALRI both in preterm and term infants accounts an important percent of hospitalizations in the season, and may threat other high-risk patients in the NICU. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.Item Evaluation of the Depression, Anxiety Levels and Attitudes of Mothers of Children with Celiac Disease; [Çölyak Hastalığı Olan Çocukların Annelerinin Depresyon, Kaygı Düzeyleri ve Tutumlarının Değerlendirilmesi](Galenos Publishing House, 2020) Dogan G.; Yalin Sapmaz S.; Cagan Appak Y.; Ozturk M.; Yigit Y.; Kasirga E.Objective: In celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is required for lifelong. Difficulties experienced by children with celiac disease can also negatively affect caregivers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anxiety and depression of mothers having a child with celiac disease, and evaluate mothers’ attitude towards their children. Method: Thirty-six children with celiac disease, their mothers, and 36 healthy controls were included in the study. The Parent Attitude Research Instrument, State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Beck Depression Inventory were completed by all mothers. Results: The mothers of children with celiac disease had significantly higher scores in depression and state-trait anxiety than the mothers of the healthy children. Mothers of children with celiac disease had significantly higher scores in the attitude of overparenting, authoritarian attitude and attitude of hostility and rejection than the mothers of healthy children. Conclusion: This study revealed that having a child with celiac disease might have negative effects on mothers and their attitudes towards their children. Because of psychopathologic risks appropriate psychologic support should be provided for mothers. © Copyright Health Sciences University Bakırköy Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital.Item EPISODE OF ACUTE HEMOLYSIS DUE TO UNDIAGNOSED GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHIDROGENASE DEFICIENCY IN AN ADOLESCENT WITH NEWLY DIAGNOSED TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE(Acta Endocrinologica Foundation, 2023) Goren T.A.; Kilimci D.D.; Yigit Y.; Yildirim A.T.; Gulen H.; Ersoy B.Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme deficiency is common in the community. The most important clinical manifestation of G6PD deficiency is acute hemolytic anemia due to oxidative stressors. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) can precipitate hemolysis in patients with G6PD deficiency. Here, we described a 15-year-old male with newly diagnosed type 1 DM (T1DM) and unknown G6PD deficiency who suffered from hemolytic anemia during normalization of blood glucose. On admission, the patient did not have ketoacidosis. After the patient's blood sugars were regulated with insulin therapy, he presented five days later with hemolytic anemia. The cause of hemolytic anemia was G6PD deficiency. The patient had no previous episodes of hemolysis and had no relevant family history. Hypoglycemia did not occur during blood glucose regulation. The return of blood sugar to normal after a long period of hyperglycemia was thought to be the possible cause of hemolysis. In conclusion, G6PD deficiency should be considered when there is an episode of hemolysis in newly diagnosed children and adolescents with T1DM, especially in the absence of ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia. © 2023, Acta Endocrinologica Foundation.
