Item Similarity transformations for partial differential equations(Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Publications, 1998) Pakdemirli M.; Yurusoy M.The importance of similarity transformations and their applications to partial differential equations is discussed. The theory has been presented in a simple manner so that it would be beneficial at the undergraduate level. Special group transformations useful for producing similarity solutions are investigated. Scaling, translation, and the spiral group of transformations are applied to well-known problems in mathematical physics, such as the boundary layer equations, the wave equation, and the heat conduction equation. Finally, a new transformation including the mentioned transformations as its special cases is also proposed.Item On approximate symmetries of a wave equation with quadratic non-linearity(Assoc Sci Res, 2000) Pakdemirli M.; Yurusoy M.Two different approximate symmetry methods and a proposed new one are contrasted using a wave equation with quadratic non-linearity. For each method, the approximate symmetries are calculated first. Then approximate solutions corresponding to some of the symmetries are calculated. It is found that a given specific approximate solution is attainable only by using the new proposed method.Item Entropy generation in non-Newtonian fluid flow in a slider bearing(Indian Academy of Sciences, 2004) Pakdemirli M.; Yilbas B.S.; Yurusoy M.In the present study, entropy production in flow fields due to slider bearings is formulated. The rate of entropy generation is computed for different fluid properties and geometric configurations of the slider bearing. In order to account for the non-Newtonian effect, a special type of third-grade fluid is considered. It is found that the rate of entropy generation is influenced significantly by the height of the bearing clearance and the non-Newtonian parameter of the fluid.
