Item Clinical characteristics, post-treatment assessment and prognostic factors affecting patient survival of patients at 65 years of age or older with hodgkin lymphoma: A retrospective multicenter study from Turkey(A. CARBONE Editore, 2015) Berber I.; Erkurt M.A.; Keklik M.; Dogu M.H.; Terzi H.; Pala C.; Sari H.I.; Sencan M.; Sivgin S.; Hacioglu S.; Altuntas F.; Aydogdu I.; Ilhan O.Introduction: During the last three decades, major advances have been made in the therapy of Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, despite these advances, Hodgkin's lymphoma has a poor prognosis in the elderly. The proportion of Hodgkin's lymphoma patients aged > 60 ranges in the different reports between 15% and 35%. This study aimed to examine clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes and prognostic factors affecting patient survival in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients aged 65 years or older. Material methods: Hodgkin's lymphoma patients at 65 years of age and older managed within last 5 years in a total of 5 centers in Turkey were retrospectively assessed. Results: The median age of a total of 32 patients was 71 (65-83) years. Elderly patients presented more frequently with B symptoms, elevated sedimentation rate, mixed cellularity histologic subtype and comorbid disease. Less frequent were bulky disease, bone marrow involvement, and the application of autologous stem cell transplantation. The nodular lymphocyte predominant subtype and lymphocyte rich subtype were not observed at all. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, ferritin, total protein, and histological type were significant predictors affecting survival (p<0.05). Conclusions: Hodgkin's lymphoma is a more fatal disease in 65 years of age or older, when compared to the young population. Tumor biology, older age itself, and other factors related to comorbidity probably contribute to the worse outcome of elderly patients. Further large-scale studies are needed to better investigate the factors that were significant predictors of patient survival.Item Comparison of the mental symptoms in peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis patients(A. CARBONE Editore, 2015) Pakyuz S.C.; Karaca S.; Bahcebasi Z.B.Introduction: Although dialysis has become a life-prolonging therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease, dialysis patients deal with serious problems. Dialysis patients face major mental problems such as depression, anxiety and stress and paranoia. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare mental symptoms in chronic haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. Materials and methods: One hundred twenty-nine haemodialysis and 100 peritoneal dialysis patients were included in this study. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was used for the mental symptoms evaluation. Statistical analysis was performed using chisquare, t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Although the BSI and its subscales such as the mean global severity index, somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety and paranoid ideation scores of the haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients were similar, hostility, phobic anxiety and psychosis scores were significantly higher in the peritoneal dialysis patients than in haemodialysis patients. The BSI subscales such as anxiety, hostility and psychosis were negatively correlated with age in the haemodialysis patients, and hostility was negatively correlated with age in the peritoneal dialysis patients. In the peritoneal dialysis patients, paranoid ideation scores of female were higher than the scores of male. In the haemodialysis patients, hostility scores of male were higher than the scores of female. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that hostility, phobic anxiety and psychosis are higher in peritoneal dialysis patients compared to haemodialysis patients. We suggest that dialysis patients especially on peritoneal dialysis and younger dialysis patients should be evaluated for mental symptoms and supported as needed.Item Sleep quality, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and symptoms in patients with varicose vein: The effect of regular pressured varicose vein stocking usage(A. CARBONE Editore, 2016) Atik D.; Erdoğan Z.; Karatepe H.; Cematik; Çinar S.Introduction: Lower extremity varicosity is an important health problem frequently seen in society that decreases the quality of life and can cause serious complications under certain circumstances. This study was aimed to determine the effect of pressured varicose vein stockings on sleep quality, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome symptoms, and symptoms of patients with varicose veins who were suggested for conservative treatment. Materials and methods: The study was designed according to a pretest posttest single study group pattern from experimental research methods. In gathering data for the study, a questionnaire on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, The Berlin Sleep Questionnaire, and the Sleep Quality Scale were used. Results: One month of varicose vein stocking use was seen to decrease Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) risk (p < 0.05). When the sleep quality of patients for the last month was evaluated using the The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQS), a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the first inventory application and the last inventory application was found (p < 0.01), and statistically meaningful decreases in pain, cramps, edema, itching, weight feeling and leg fatigue perceptions were seen in patients (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Regular varicose vein stocking use was found to increase sleep quality and improve OSAS symptoms. In addition, regular varicose vein stocking use was found to decrease symptoms of patients with varicose veins.Item Investigation of hand hygiene knowledge level of physiotherapy and rehabilitation students(A. CARBONE Editore, 2018) Ilgin D.; Karaali H.K.; Ozcan O.; Arslan S.; Arslan T.; Gunduz T.; Limoncu M.E.Introduction: Increasing health care students' awareness about the hand hygiene (HH) during the pre-graduation period becomes an important requirement for providing both patient's safety and the healthcare student's safety by preventing healthcare associated infections (HCAIs). Although it has been emphasized that rehabilitation clinics are important places to be taken into consideration in the transmission of HCAIs, the number of studies about the students from department of physiotherapy and rehabilitation (DPR) are limited. Thus, our research was done to examine the HH knowledge level of students of DPR. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was done by 191 volunteers from a total of 209 first and second-year students. We recorded the sociodemographic characteristics. Based on the suggestions commented in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guideline for HH in Health Care Settings, HH knowledge levels were assessed using face to face interview technique. Results: The average correct answer rate to the questions about the HH knowledge level was 69.49%. The level of knowledge about the importance of HH was good, but the correct response rates for terminology and alcohol-based handrub were less than 50%. Conclusions: Since DPR students form an important ring in the therapy chain, so in the development of educational programs for the students of DPR, it is very important to improve their knowledge level especially about terminology and alcohol-based handrub techniques. © 2018 A. CARBONE Editore, 2020) Yildiz S.; Ates O.; Gelen E.; Cirak E.; Bakici D.; Sert V.; Kayihan G.; Ozkan A.Purpose: In soccer, reaction time (RT), speed and agility are important athletic skills that affect the performance of athletes. The aim of our study was to examine the relationship between these three athletic skills. Materials and methods: In this study, 73 high-level, active soccer players having at least 5 years of game experience (training age 10.72.9 years) participated voluntarily. The physical characteristics of the soccer players were: height (177.85.5 cm), weight (73.68.1 kg), and age (22.02.7 years). The participant's tests which were taken on non-consecutive days measured RT (Visual reaction test, Lafayette, Multi-Operational Apparatus for Reaction Time (MOART) system), speed (15 m, Fusion Sport, Smart Speed) and agility (open skills (OS) and closed skills (CS), Fusion Sport, Smart Speed). Results: A significant correlation was found between agility (CS) and speed (p0.05) however, there was no significant relationship between reaction time and agility (OS and CS) (p0.05). Conclusion: The important athletic skills of speed and quick change of direction were shown to have an effect on each other. It may be of benefit to add change of direction drills to training programs in order to improve the speed performance of the athletes. © 2020 A. CARBONE Editore. All rights reserved.
