Item The communication barriers between teachers and parents in primary schools; [İlköğretim okullarında öğretmen-veli iletişiminde karşılaşılan engeller](Ani Publishing, 2016) Ozmen F.; Akuzum C.; Zincirli M.; Selcuk G.Problem Statement: In educational institutions, the effectiveness of communication between teachers and parents, in terms of student achievement and attendance, has a great importance. Parent-teacher communication provides multi-faceted benefits to teachers, the school, and parents as well. However, various obstacles hinder the realization of effective parent-teacher communication in school settings. Purpose of Study: The main purpose of this study is to determine the communication barriers between parents and teachers, based on the views of primary school teachers. This study is seen as important since it addresses the barriers in communication, which is seen as vital for achieving educational aims effectively. Effective communication provides achievement and improvement by providing support to parents, students, teachers, and schools and promoting appropriate environments. Method: This research is a survey type descriptive study. Due to the stratified and random type sample formation, 850 teachers were considered to be taken into the research sample; however, 514 of the distributed questionnaires were found valid. The data collection tool used was a four-dimensioned scale developed by the researchers themselves. In the analysis of the data, parametric and non-parametric tests were used. Findings: The findings revealed that teachers experienced “individual” barriers at a “general” level, but other “socio-cultural,” “accessibility,” and “field and status” related barriers at were experienced at the “very rare” level without any significant differences considering the gender and branches of the teachers. However, novice teachers (5 years and less work experience) stated significantly the most individual barriers and the most barriers related to the other dimensions as well. Results and Suggestions: The results obtained in this study show the same major communication preventive issues between teachers and parents documented in the literature. Thus, results such as physical distance, socio-cultural differences (language, dress, values), meeting with parents only when money is required, parents’ lack of trust in teachers and their unwillingness for cooperation, parents’ financial problems and lack of interest about informing parents of school-related issues, inappropriate schedule of school activities, teachers’ misbehaviors, parents’ education level, parents’ mistrust in teachers and managers, and the like also confirm the situation represented in previous research. It was recommended that school managers and teachers adopt an open-door policy for parents; and the schools should take the initiative of realizing collaborative efforts among the school staff, parents, and other relevant institutions in order to eliminate communication barriers. The training of the school administrators, teachers, and families about gaining effective communication skills that will contribute to student achievement should be emphasized. © 2016, Ani Publishing. For the STEM education which is at the center of this update to reach its target, it is highly important that students accurately learn what engineers do, what their work field is, the characteristics they should carry and understand the nature of engineering. The present study aims to identify the perception of engineers of 5th, 6th and 7th grade middle school students through drawings. Research Methods: The study group of this research which is a descriptive survey model consisted of 119 students from a city located in the East Anatolian region of Turkey who were 5th, 6th and 7th grade students. The “Draw an Engineer” form was used as the data collection tool and the drawings were evaluated with a checklist. Findings: As a result of this study, it was determined that a majority of the students adopted the stereotyped idea that engineers are male. The findings showed that as the age increased, the rate of male engineers in the drawings increased as well and engineers creating designs were given more place to. In this study, it was concluded that in general the students mixed up what engineers do with the work construction workers or repairmen do and that they perceived engineers as individuals who work alone. Implications for Research and Practice: To be able to develop students’ perception of engineers in a positive manner, it is considered important for students’ to experience STEM education applications. In this context, it is suggested to give place to ‘Science, Engineering and Entrepreneurship Applications’ in all grade levels both in school and outside school learning environments. © 2019 Ani Publishing Ltd. Research Methods: This study employed a relational survey research design and involved 271 pre-service teachers who were selected according to the purposive sampling method. Data were collected by implementing an achievement test and Self-directed Learning Readiness Scale and analyzed through the Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regression procedure.. Findings The findings of the study showed that in the first model, gender and desire for learning predicted the achievement of pre-service teachers. The second model revealed that being in a flipped learning class predicted the academic achievement of pre-service teachers than being in any other classes taught according to traditional teaching principles Implications for Research and Practice: It is suggested that pre-service teachers are provided with opportunities to apply what they have learned theoretically. Also, it may be suggested that instructors include various computer applications, software, games, and videos from YouTube to increase the pre-service teachers’ desire to learn. Lastly, for further studies, it may be suggested to include different variables in predicting the achievement of pre-service teachers. © 2020 Ani Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
