The availability of vaginal hysterectomy in benign gynecologic diseases: A prospective, non-randomized trial
    (Blackwell Publishing Asia, 2010) Guvenal T.; Ozsoy A.Z.; Kilcik M.A.; Yanik A.
Objective: To determine whether vaginal hysterectomy can be performed in patients with benign gynecologic diseases regardless of uterine size, uterine mobility and previous pelvic surgery and to compare with abdominal hysterectomy. Study Design: Between 2003 and 2008, we compared 47 vaginal hysterectomies (VH) with 61 abdominal hysterectomies (AH). We excluded from the study the clinical conditions that mandate abdominal exploration and standard indications for VH such as uterovaginal prolapse. Large, immobile uterus and previous pelvic surgery were not accepted as a contraindication for VH. Demographic characteristics, primary diagnosis, uterine weight, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, complications, and hospital stay and cost in both groups were compared. Results: Groups were similar with respect to demographic features and primary indications. Mean uterine weight and mean operation time were similar in VH and AH groups (258.0 g vs 293.9 g and 93.7 min vs 101.4 min, respectively). Oopherectomy was performed in 44.7% of VH and in 83.6% of AH. Colporrhaphies and/or anti-incontinence surgery were performed in 15 patients in the VH group (31.9%). The intraoperative blood loss was lower in the VH group than the AH group (245.0 mL vs 408.6 mL, P < 0.001). Perioperative complications were increased with AHs. The mean hospital stay and operation cost in the VH group were significantly less than the AH group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study indicates that vaginal hysterectomy could be performed with less morbidity in patients with benign gynecologic diseases even in large, immobile uterus and previous pelvic surgery © 2010 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Skin cancer knowledge and sun protection behavior among nursing students
    (Blackwell Publishing Asia, 2014) Yilmaz M.; Yavuz B.; Subasi M.; Kartal A.; Celebioglu A.; Kacar H.; Adana F.; Ozyurek P.; Altiparmak S.
Aim: The objective of this study was to determine skin cancer knowledge and sun protection behavior among nursing students. Methods: A total of 1178 nursing students in the Aegean Region of Turkey took part in this descriptive study. A score for knowledge on protection against skin cancer and a score for protective behavior against skin cancer were calculated. Results: In this study, first year students sunbathed more in the middle of the day than fourth year students, and their knowledge of skin cancer was lower. No statistical difference was determined for protective behavior between the two groups. The knowledge levels and protective behavior of first year students were alarmingly low, but the average scores for knowledge and behavior of the fourth year university students were higher. The knowledge levels of the fourth year students were average but their protective behavior was insufficient. It was found that the knowledge levels and the levels of protective behavior of light-skinned students were higher. Conclusion: This study revealed that the knowledge levels and protective behavior of first year nursing students against the harmful effects of the sun and for protection against skin cancer were alarmingly low. It also showed that the knowledge levels of the fourth year nursing students were average, but that their protective behavior was very insufficient. These findings suggest that it is of extreme importance to acquire knowledge and behavior for protection against skin cancers in the education of nursing students. © 2014 Japan Academy of Nursing Science.

Scale development study: The Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients
(Blackwell Publishing Asia, 2016) Albayrak Cosar A.; Cinar Pakyuz S.
Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement instrument to identify knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes of hemodialysis (HD) patients about fluid control as these patients are inadequate in ensuring and sustaining fluid control. Methods: The sample of this methodological study consisted of 276 HD patients who are being treated in two public and two private hemodialysis centers. The validity of the scale was assessed through content validity, construct validity, and similar scale validity, and its reliability through item analysis, internal consistency coefficient and test-retest. For the content validity of the scale, expert views were assessed, and opinions of a Turkish language specialist were obtained. Results: According to the exploratory factor analysis, the scale had 24 items and three subdimensions, namely, knowledge, behavior, and attitude. The total variance explained was found to be 51.15%. Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of the Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale (FCHPS) turned out to be 0.88 and Cronbach's alpha for its subdimensions were 0.92, 0.80, and 0.67, respectively. The correlation value between test and retest was 0.94 (P<0.001). A moderate significant correlation (r=0.58, P<0.001) was found between the scale scores and the scores of the Dialysis Diet and Fluid Restrictions Non-adherence Questionnaire. Conclusion: The FCHPS that was developed has good validity and reliability. This scale can be used to measure knowledge, behavior, and attitude of hemodialysis patients about fluid restriction. © 2016 Japan Academy of Nursing Science.
