Item A multicentre study of abdominal aorta diameters in a Turkish population(Cambridge Medical Publications, 2002) Sariosmanoglu N.; Ugurlu B.; Karacelik M.; Tuzun E.; Yorulmaz I.; Manisali M.; Oto A.; Besim A.; Oto O.The aim of this study was to determine the normal values for aortic diameters and the prevalence of aortic dilatation in a mixed Turkish population. Between March 1998 and May 2000, patients who were undergoing abdominal ultrasonography examination for pathologies not involving the aorta, in three different cities, were enrolled into the study prospectively. The anterior posterior aortic diameters were measured at the subdiaphragmatic and aortic bifurcation levels using ultrasonography. A total of 596 patients were included (302 females, 294 males). The mean age was 48 ± 16 years (range, 6 - 88 years). The mean aortic diameter in the whole group was 19.0 ± 3.9 mm (10 - 45 mm) at the subdiaphragmatic level and 15.7 ± 3.6 mm (9 - 65 mm) at the aortic bifurcation level. The mean subdiaphragmatic aortic diameter was 18 ± 3 mm in females and 19 ± 4 mm in males. The mean aortic diameters at the bifurcation level was 15 ± 3 mm in females and 16 ± 4 mm in males. An aortic bifurcation diameter > 30 mm was encountered in 0.6% of the population. This ratio increased to 1.8% in patients over 55 years of age, regardless of sex. A subdiaphragmatic aorta diameter above 30 mm was observed in 1.2% of the population. In patients over the age of 55 years, this ratio increased to 2.7% (3.6% in males and 1.9% in females). In this national study, the subdiaphragmatic aortic diameters were similar to mean values reported in the world literature. The mean aortic bifurcation diameters were generally lower when compared with the literature, which may be due to difficulties in standardization of the measurements. Aneurysmal dilatation rates in this study also conform to those reported in studies conducted in other countries. Considering the significant number of patients with aneurysmal dilatation of the aorta in the elderly population, we believe it would be prudent to evaluate the aorta in all patients undergoing abdominal ultrasonographic examination.Item Recreational and master athletic activity does not affect free and total prostate-specific antigen levels but lowers the free-to-total prostate-specific antigen ratio(Cambridge Medical Publications, 2004) Ulman C.; Buyukyazi G.; Taneli F.; Uyanik B.S.Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and the ratio of free-to-total PSA are widely used tumour markers, but the effect of exercise on these parameters is unclear. We aimed to determine whether long-term physical training was associated with changes in serum PSA by comparing PSA concentrations in middle-aged master athletes (n = 12), recreational athletes (n = 12) and sedentary controls (n = 12). Serum total PSA and free PSA concentrations were assessed using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay; there were no significant differences among the groups. The free-to-total PSA ratio was significantly lower statistically in master athletes compared with recreational athletes, but this is not clinically significant as both values (0.22 versus 0.31, respectively) were within the normal range. These results indicate that the free-to-total PSA ratio may be affected by long-term athletic training, and could be important when evaluating athletes with prostate-related disorders.Item Myelofibrosis associated with severe vitamin D deficiency rickets(Cambridge Medical Publications, 2005) Balkan C.; Ersoy B.; Nese N.Myelofibrosis is a rare disorder in childhood. In this report, we present the case of a 6-month-old infant with myelofibrosis due to severe vitamin D deficiency rickets. The characteristic clinical and laboratory findings of myelofibrosis improved rapidly after vitamin D therapy. In developing countries, nutritional rickets is still an important health problem. Rickets is not only a skeletal system-related disorder, it is also a systemic disorder. Rickets should be considered, therefore, as one of the conditions that can lead to severe haematological disorders in infants.Item Serum Her-2/neu and survivin levels and their relationship to histological parameters in early-stage breast cancer(Cambridge Medical Publications, 2007) Goksel G.; Taneli F.; Uslu R.; Ulman C.; Dinc G.; Coskun T.; Kandiloglu A.R.This study was conducted to investigate the serum levels of her-2/neu and survivin in patients with early-stage breast cancer and their relationship with known histological parameters. Forty-one patients with early-stage breast cancer were investigated. Serum samples were collected from patients on their first admission before adjuvant chemotherapy, and from healthy controls. Serum her-2/neu and survivin levels were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There was no difference in the levels of serum her-2/neu and survivin between the breast cancer patients and the control group. Serum her-2/neu concentration showed moderate correlations with disease stage and the Ki-67 level, and the serum survivin level showed a moderate correlation with progesterone receptor concentration. Serum levels of her-2/neu and survivin were not significantly related to age and histological parameters in patients with early-stage breast cancer. However, much research continues on the prognostic value of serum her-2/neu and survivin levels, and important new knowledge may ultimately emerge. Copyright © 2007 Cambridge Medical Publications.
