    Clinical and histological changes of intrathecally administered gadopentate dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA) in normal rats

    Objectives: This study is carried out to explore clinical and histological changes induced in rats by intrathecal administration of Gd-DTPA via suboccipital spinal injection. 2.5, 5, 10 μmol/g-brain of Gd-DTPA were injected intrathecally to 43 adult male rats and sucrose as control solution with same volume and osmolarity were injected to 18 rats. Animals were sacrificed on day 4 and 14. Sections from the cortex, brain stem, cerebellum and medulla spinalis were obtained to examine for cell loss and apoptosis. In this study, no clinical abnormalities were observed in 69.8% of rats of Gd-DTPA group and in 83.3% of rats of sucrose group. Transient neurological signs such as ataxia and paresis were seen in 11.6% of rats in the Gd-DTPA group and in 5.5% of rats in the sucrose group. They were seen more frequently in the Gd-DTPA group especially in the highest dose and volume. Histological examination did not revealed necrosis or apoptosis in both groups. This study suggests that intrathecally administered Gd-DTPA may be safe in humans when lower doses per gram of brain are used than rats.

    Traumatic nerve root avulsion and pseudomeningocele diagnosed by three dimensional MRI technique (CISS sequence): A case report

    This case report demonstrates the importance of the CISS sequence, a fast imaging technique in MRI, in case of suspected nerve root avulsion. We present a case of traumatic pseudomeningoceles at T1-T2 root levels with right T2 ventral root avulsion without associated skeletal fracture diagnosed by MRI using the three dimensional CISS technique. A 28-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department following a motorcycle accident. Clinical examination revealed paresis in intrinsic muscles of the right hand. Traumatic pseudomeningoceles at T1-T2 root levels bilaterally with right T2 ventral root avulsion without associated skeletal fracture were diagnosed by three dimensional cervicothoracic MRI with CISS technique.

    MRI findings of globe and optic nerves in tilted disk syndrome

    We assessed the anatomical variations of the globe and optic nerve in tilted disk (TD) syndrome using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and compared them with a control group. Eleven patients diagnosed with TD syndrome during eye examination were referred for MRI of the sella and chiasm to exclude intracranial mass lesions. The shape of the globe, the chiasmal angle, the insertion angles of the optic nerve in axial and parasagittal planes determined by lines parallel to the optic nerve and tangent to the globe in TD syndrome were compared with a control group consisting of 53 cases. Gender ratios were 7/4 (F/M) for the TD group and 35/18 for the control group (p>0.05). The insertion angle of the optic disk to the globe was wider in the temporal quadrant (p<0.05) and narrower in the nasal quadrant (p<0.05) in TD syndrome than in the control group. There was no significant difference in the superior and inferior insertion angles between the groups. The anterior-posterior (AP) diameter of the globe was significantly longer in patients with TD (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the optic chiasm angles. The relationships of the optic disk and the globe were significantly different in patients with TD syndrome in comparison to the control group. TD syndrome is related to the malalignment of optic nerve and globe in the horizontal plane.
