    Determination of the Sr/Ca ratio of tooth samples by photoactivation analysis in Southern Turkey

    A nuclear analytical technique, namely instrumental photon activation analysis (IPAA), was used to determine Sr and Ca concentrations in human teeth. This work was conducted using the first accelerator facility, an off-shelf clinical linear accelerator (cLINAC), in Turkey. The tooth samples supplied by the Akdeniz University Faculty of Dentistry were analyzed for determination of the Sr/Ca element ratio. The results were obtained to demonstrate the impact of socioeconomic changes on dietary habits. A calibration material (CM; a mixture of calcium and strontium oxides) was required for quantification of the analytical results. The tooth samples, together with the CM, were exposed to 18 MeV end-point energy bremsstrahlung photons from the cLINAC. Thereafter, the γ-ray spectra of the samples and the CM were obtained using high resolution γ spectroscopy. Variations in the Sr/Ca ratio in the teeth of patients fed with beef and fizzy beverages were investigated in this study. © 2018 Walter de Gruyter GmbH. All rights reserved.

    Perceived barriers to diabetes management at home: A qualitative study

    Background: Diabetes is a complex and progressive disease and its treatment requires self-management strategies specific for each patient. The aim of the study was to determine perceived barriers to diabetes management at home in type II diabetes patients. Materials and methods: Inclusion criteria of this phenomenological study included living in Izmir and a diagnosis for the last 1 year; 15 patients with diabetes participated the study. A semi-structured interview form based on Health Belief Model created by researchers with experts opinion, was used at in-depth face-to-face interviews. Data were analyzed with content analysis. Ethical and hospital approval was obtained. Participation of individuals is based on volunteerism; written informed consent from patients who accepted the study. Results: Perceived barriers to fulfilling home care needs and sustaining behavior of diabetes management included six themes, i.e. insufficient knowledge of diabetes, inability to accept diabetes, non-adherence to diabetes and exercise, problems with health care services, fear and effects of the family and the society and relevant subthemes. Conclusion: These findings about the barriers of the patients should provide guidance for patient specific nursing interventions. © 2019 De Gruyter. All rights reserved.

    Effects of α-lactalbumin and sulindac on primary and metastatic human colon cancer cell lines

    Background: HAMLET (human α-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells) and sulindac are active ingredients which are used in the treatment of cancers. Under both in vivo and in vitro conditions, HAMLET binds to the surface of tumor cells and enters the cells. Sulindac is one of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It inhibits the growth of tumor cells by inducing the apoptosis. In our study, we aimed to investigate effects of α-lactalbumin and sulindac on COLO- 320 primary and COLO-741 metastatic human colon carcinoma cell lines via mitochondrial apoptotic pathway by indirect immunocytochemistry and TUNEL assays. Materials and methods: The effects of α-lactalbumin and sulindac were assessed by using MTT assay at 24, 48 and 72 h and apoptosis markers caspase-3, caspase-9 and cytochrome-c were detected using immunocytochemistry and TUNEL methods. Results: It was appeared that α-lactalbumin and sulindac may triggger mechanisms of apoptosis in both primary and metastatic colon carcinoma cell lines and the primary colon carcinoma cell line was affected more than the metastatic cells. Conclusion: It is proposed that α-lactalbumin and sulindac can be used in cancer treatments and future in vivo experiments. © 2019 De Gruyter. All rights reserved.

    The effect of Paracetamol exposure on hepatic and renal tissues during statin usage

    Objective: Statins and Paracetamol have widespread use in clinic and both drugs possess similar side effects; therefore, we investigated if drug-interaction occurs when the combination of these two drugs is used during therapy. Materials and methods: A total of 32 (12-15 months old) grown-up male rats were divided into four groups: Control group, RSV group (10 mg/kg Rosuvastatin/daily), APAP group (50 mg/kg Paracetamol/5 days/weekly), RSV + APAP (10 mg/kg Rosuvastatin/daily + 50 mg/kg Paracetamol/5 days/weekly). At the end of 8 weeks of chronic treatment, the blood and tissue samples were taken under the Ketamine and Xylasine anesthesia (50 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg, respectively). Results: In the liver, sinusoidal dilatations, pyknotic nuclei and hemorrhagic foci are more frequently seen in the group receiving combination therapy; although serum liver functions among groups were not significantly different. Kidney histopathologic alterations in APAP and RSV + APAP groups were found more distinct than in RSV alone group. Inducible nitric oxide synthase activity was highly increased with combination therapy in liver and kidney tissues. Conclusion: RSV-Paracetamol interaction may occur as an important drug interaction histopathologically even before it is manifested biochemically in the clinic. © 2019 De Gruyter.     Placental elasticity assessment by point shear wave elastography in pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction

    Placental elasticity varies in different diseases. Our objective was to evaluate placental elasticity using point shear wave elastography (pSWE) in pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). A total of 66 pregnant women with IUGR and 81 healthy pregnant women were enrolled. Placental elasticity was measured using the transabdominal pSWE method. Ten measurements were made, and the mean was accepted as the mean placental elasticity value in each case. The results for IUGR pregnancies and controls were compared. The mean pSWE values were significantly higher in pregnancies with IUGR, which means that women with IUGR have stiffer placentas (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the pSWE values were significantly and positively correlated with Doppler indices and adverse perinatal outcomes. The pregnancies with IUGR had stiffer placentas than the healthy controls. The utilization of pSWE for placental elasticity may be useful in the diagnosis and management of IUGR as a supplement to the existing ultrasonography methods. © 2019 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

    Investigation of effect of Vitamin D receptor, calcium-sensing receptor and β-catenin on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma; [D vitamini reseptörü, kalsiyuma duyarlı reseptör ve β-katenin'in skuamöz hücreli deri kanseri üzerine etkisinin araştırılması]

    Background: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a malignant and invasive tumor which is originated from epidermis with a high incidence among non-melanoma skin cancers. The aim of this study was to determine whether vitamin D receptor (VDR), calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) and beta catenin (β-catenin) proteins have an effect on cSCC. Materials and methods: VDR, CaSR and β-catenin proteins in tissue samples of cSCC and control group were analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blotting (WB) method. IHC findings were statistically evaluated. Results: IHC staining density of VDR and β-catenin were higher in cSCC tissue samples than control. The difference between IHC staining density of VDR and β-catenin in the patient and the control groups were statistically significant (p = 0.021, p = 0.021, respectively), but not for CaSR (p = 0.237). While the VDR and β-catenin staining rates obtained by the IHC method could be supported by WB results, the WB bands for CaSR could not be shown. Conclusion: The findings suggest that VDR and β-catenin may have an effect on the disease. Further research is required to better understand the role of VDR and β-catenin together on cSCC. © 2020 De Gruyter. All rights reserved.

    New approximate solutions to electrostatic differential equations obtained by using numerical and analytical methods

    In this paper, we implement the optimal homotopy asymptotic method to find the approximate solutions of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. We also use the results of the conjugate gradient method for comparison with those of the optimal homotopy asymptotic method. Our study reveals that the optimal homotopy asymptotic method gives more effective results than conjugate gradient algorithms for the considered problems. © 2020 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
