    Comparative in vitro cytotoxic effects of ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin against Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoites

    A strain of Trichomonas vaginalis, isolated from a patient complaining of vaginal discharge, was incubated and cultivated to compare the in vitro effects of ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin on T. vaginalis trophozoites in terms of minimal inhibition concentrations (MICs) and minimal lethal concentrations (MLCs). MIC levels at 24 hours for ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin were 50 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL, and 750 mg/mL. Corresponding MLC levels were the same. In this in vitro study, ornidazole was found to be the most effective drug among 3 drugs tested against T. vaginalis trophozoites in terms of MIC and MLC levels. It is interesting to note that ciprofloxacin, although not as effective as the others, also had some cytotoxic effect on T. vaginalis trophozoites.

    Potential predictive factors for response to weekly paclitaxel treatment in patients with metastatic breast cancer

    The authors compare results obtained from weekly paclitaxel treatment in advanced breast cancer patients with biological and clinical prognostic factors. Expression of c-erbB-2, Ki-67, p53 and hormone receptors (HR) was examined by immunohistochemistry in samples of breast tissue from 30 patients. Univariate analysis showed that Ki-67 positivity and low performance status (PS) were associated with poor outcome (P <0.05). We observed that expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 did not have any negative effect on response to chemotherapy and survival. HR-negative patients had better response and slightly statistically significant overall survival (OS) rates compared to HR-positive patients (P >0.05). In a multivariate analysis low PS was the only significant predictor of shorter survival (P <0.05). In conclusion, while the expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 did not have any effect on treatment results, negative Ki-67 expression and negative HR status were associated with better OS in this patient population.     Clinical aspects and risk factors of nosocomial Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteremia episodes in a Turkish intensive care unit

    Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an important nosocomial pathogen with increasing frequency in recent years, especially in immunocompromised and clinically debilitated patients. The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of 35 episodes of S. maltophilia bacteremia at Celal Bayar University hospital in Turkey over a 3-year period from January 2003 to December 2005. Cases were identified with microbiology laboratory records and clinical data were collected from the medical record of each patient. The source of bacteremia was central venous catheter (CVC) in 65.7% (23) and respiratory tract infection in 2.9% (1) of episodes while the source of bacteremia was unknown in 11 (31.4%) episodes of bacteremia. Factors significantly associated with mortality were age of ≥65 years, APACHE score of ≥16, the presence of the total parenteral nutrition, anemia, low creatinine clearance level and shock. The most sensitive antibiotic was found as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (91.4%) in antibiotic susceptibility testing of the isolates. Susceptibilities of piperacillin-tazobactam and netilmicin which frequently used antibiotics as an empirical therapy were 62.8% and 68.6%, respectively. © E.S.I.F.T. srl.
