Item Examining the level of knowledge and practices regarding the use of biologic agents among nurses working in oncology and hematology clinics at a university hospital; [Bir üniversite hastanesinin onkoloji ve hematoloji kliniklerinde çalışan hemşirelerin biyolojik ajan kullanımı ile ilgili bilgi ve uygulamalarının incelenmesi](Istanbul Tip Fakultesi, 2012) ÖzçelIk H.; Tokem Y.; Fadiloǧlu C.; Güngör N.; Dedeli O.OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the level of knowledge and practices of nurses responsible for the execution and management of cancer treatment in patients receiving biotherapy as related to the use of biological agents. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted with 40 nurses in oncology and hematology units of a university Medical Faculty hospital in which biological agents are frequently applied. RESULTS The majority of nurses (57.5%) were aged 23-27 years. It was determined that 35.5% of nurses obtained a patient history and 82.5% queried the allergic history of patients before biotherapy. According to the nurses' responses, 79.5% monitored the patients in terms of development of local complications, 85% informed the patients about complications, and 77.5% informed them about delayed infusion reactions. CONCLUSION Although the majority of nurses had not received a specific education about biotherapy, they were knowledgeable as related to the storage, preparation and administration of biological agents. © 2012 Association of Oncology.Item The role of hydroxytyrosol in health and disease; [Sağlık ve hastalıkta hidroksitirozolün rolü](Istanbul Tip Fakultesi, 2014) Tuğrul B.; Oktay L.M.Hydroxytyrosol is a phenolic compound released from the hydrolysis of oleuropein and is present in olive oil, leaf and fruit. Recently, studies on hydroxytyrosol have revealed its strong antioxidant and antiinflamatory effects. In vitro studies conducted in various cancer cell lines and in vivo assays carried out on animals reported strong evidences for its antiinflamatory, antiproliferative and proapoptotic influences. In addition, in cancer it is believed to have inhibitory effects during angiogenesis. Its modulatory role on bone formation and prevention of bone loss has been the attraction of some studies. If the molecular mechanisms and cellular pathways of hydroxytyrosol are elucidated, it will be possible to plan new strategies targeting various disease involved with cancer, inflammatory and cardio-vascular pathologies. In this review, various in vitro and in vivo studies investigating the antioxidant, anticancer, antiinflamatory role of hydroxytyrosol and its inhibitory effects in osteoporosis are discussed. © 2014 Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology.Item F-18 FDG PET/CT imaging artifacts; [F-18 FDG PET/BT görüntüleme artefaktları](Istanbul Tip Fakultesi, 2015) Parlak Y.; Gümüşer G.; Sayit Bilgin B.E.F-18 FDG PET/CT are being used in increasing numbers in the diagnosis of the primary lesion, disease staging and evaluation of response to therapy of various cancers due to its high accuracy. However, PET/CT have various artifacts which affected image quality including PET and CT AC (attenuation correction) artifacts. For accurate identification of malignant lesions, to characterize these artifacts is clinically important. Our aim is to identify, to characterize and to investigate the effect of PET/CT image quality of these artifacts. © 2015 Onkoloji Derneği.Item Are hormonal agents better than chemo in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer?(Istanbul Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Yildirim S.; Erdoğan A.P.OBJECTIVE In this study, we aim to determine which treatment is more appropriate in castration-resistant chemo-therapy-naive patients. Therefore, docetaxel and agents active in the androgen pathway (abiraterone and enzalutamide) were compared retrospectively in patients progressing on androgen deprivation therapy. METHODS The study was designed as a retrospective and multicenter study. Patients from five centers in Turkey were included in the study. The primary endpoint of the study was overall survival (OS) and the second-ary endpoint was progression-free survival. RESULTS Median OS of the docetaxel group was 18.66 months, it was 16.26 months in the hormonal treatment group. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.311). Median progression-free survival of the chemotherapy group was 5.6 months, while it was 9 months in the hormonal therapy group. There was statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.024). CONCLUSION There was statistical difference in progression-free survival in favor of hormonal therapies in our study. The difference did not reflect on OS and there was no difference between hormonal therapies and docetaxel. Heterogeneity in the selection of patients is considered to lead to this result; however, larger randomized controlled studies are needed to determine the most appropriate treatment in these patients. © 2021, Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology.Item The importance of apoptosis in cancer development and treatment(Istanbul Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Gökbayrak Atay İ.N.; Gezer A.H.; Kasap E.Cancer is one of the most important causes of death in our era. Multifactorial causes are involved in the formation of cancer. The reduction of apoptosis is one of these reasons. Failure to activate apoptosis pathways can lead to resistance to the current treatment approaches of cancers. A better understanding of the molecular events that regulate apoptosis in cancers and cancer therapy form the basis of a more rational approach to the development of molecular targeted therapies in the fight against cancer. © 2021, Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology.
