Item THE PROXIMATE COMPOSITION AND SOME MINOR CONSTITUENTS OF POPPY SEEDS(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) NERGIZ, C; OTLES, SThe proximate chemical composition of poppy seeds, along with minerals and water-soluble vitamins content was investigated. The compositions of the fatty acids and tocopherols of the extracted oil were also determined. The proximate analysis of poppy seeds showed the following composition: (440 g kg(-1)), protein (211 g kg(-1)), moisture (50 g kg(-1)), ash (63 g kg(-1)), crude fibre (62 g kg(-1)) and total carbohydrates (236 g kg(-1)). Potassium and calcium were the predominant elements in the poppy seeds. Linoleic acid was the major unsaturated fatty acid (750 g kg(-1) total fatty acids) while palmitic acid was the main saturated one (86.4 g kg(-1)). The amounts of alpha-, beta- and delta-tocopherols found in poppy seed oil were 220 mu g g(-1), 40 mu g g(-1) and 20 mu g g(-1), respectively. Among the water-soluble vitamins determined, pantothenic acid was found at the highest level followed by niacin and thiamin.Item Time-domain dynamic analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation interaction including the reservoir bottom absorption(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Küçükarslan, SIn this paper, time-domain dynamic analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation interaction is presented by coupling the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) in the infinite reservoir and foundation domain and the finite element method in the finite dam domain. An efficient coupling procedure is formulated by using the sub-structuring method. The effects of the reservoir bottom absorption are included in the formulations. Sharan's boundary condition for the far-end of the infinite fluid domain is implemented. To verify the proposed scheme, numerical examples are carried out by comparing with the available exact solutions and finite-finite element coupling results for the dam-reservoir interaction. A complete dam-reservoir-foundation interaction is also studied by including the bottom absorption effects. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.Item Antibacterial activity of volatile component and various extracts of Spirulina platensis(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Ozdemir, G; Karabay, NU; Dalay, MC; Pazarbasi, BThe methanol, dichloromethane, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate extracts and volatile components of Spirulina platensis were tested in vitro for their antimicrobial activity (four Gram-positive, six Gram-negative bacteria and Candida albicans ATCC 10239). GC-MS analysis of the volatile components of S. platensis resulted in the identification of 15 compounds which constituted 96.45% of the total compounds. The volatile components of S. platensis consisted of heptadecane (39.70%) and tetradecane (34.61%) as major components. The methanol extract showed more potent antimicrobial activity than dichloromethane, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate extracts and volatile components. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.Item The validity and reliability of the Turkish version of Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog) in patients with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease and normal subjects(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Mavioglu, H; Gedizlioglu, M; Akyel, S; Aslaner, T; Eser, EObjectives The cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer's Disease Assesment Scale (ADAS-Cog) is the most widely used test in clinical trials dealing with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of ADAS-Cog. Methods Twenty-nine patients with AD, fullfilling NINCDS-ADRDA criteria of probable AD, who were in stage 3-5 according to the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), and 27 non-demented control subjects with similar age, gender and educational status were recruited for the study. The Turkish version of ADAS-Cog, Standardized Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE) and Short Orientation-Memory-Concentration Test (SOMCT) were applied to both of the groups. Inter-rater reliability, internal consistency, test-retest reliability; face validity, differential validity and convergent validity were statistically analyzed. Results Both MMSE and ADAS-Cog have significantly differentiated patients with AD and control subjects (p < 0.001). A significant correlation was established between MMSE and ADAS-Cog scores in AD group (r: -0.739). ADAS-Cog was also highly significantly correlated with GDS (r: 0.720) and SOMCT (r: 0.738). For the group with AD, control and whole cohort coefficients of internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha: 0.800, 0.515, 0.873 were found respectively. Inter-rater reliability for total ADAS-Cog score was found as ICC: 0.99 and 0.98 and test-retest reliability was found as ICC: 0.91 and 0.95 for demented and nondemented subjects, respectively. Conclusion The Turkish version of ADAS-Cog has been found to be highly reliable and valid in differentiating patients with mild and moderate AD from nondemented subjects. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Item A new perturbation solution for systems with strong quadratic and cubic nonlinearities(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Pakdemirli, M; Karahan, MMFThe new perturbation algorithm combining the method of multiple scales (MS) and Lindstedt-Poincare techniques is applied to an equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Approximate analytical solutions are found using the classical MS method and the new method. Both solutions are contrasted with the direct numerical solutions of the original equation. For the case of strong nonlinearities, solutions of the new method are in good agreement with the numerical results, whereas the amplitude and frequency estimations of classical MS yield high errors. For strongly nonlinear systems, exact periods match well with the new technique while there are large discrepancies between the exact and classical MS periods. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Item Exergy analysis of industrial pasta drying process(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Ozgener, L; Ozgener, OIn this study we present an energy and exergy modelling of industrial final macaroni (pasta) drying process for its system analysis, performance evaluation and optimization. Using actual system data, a performance assessment of the industrial macaroni drying process through energy and exergy efficiencies and system exergy destructions is conducted. The heat losses to the surroundings and exergy destructions in the overall system are quantified and illustrated using energy and exergy flow diagrams. The total energy rate input to system is 316.25 kW. The evaporation rate is 72 kg h(-1) (0.02 kg s(-1)) and energy consumption rate is found as 4.38 kW for 1 kg water evaporation from product. Humidity product rate is 792 kg h(-1) (0.22 kg s(-1)) and energy consumption rate is found about 0.4 kW for 1 kg short cut pasta product. The energy efficiencies of the pasta drying process and the overall system are found to be as 7.55-77.09% and 68.63%. The exergy efficiency of pasta drying process is obtained to be as 72.98-82.15%. For the actual system that is presented the system exergy efficiency vary between 41.90 and 70.94%. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Item Determination of nutrients and volatile constituents of Agaricus bisporus (brown) at different stages(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD) Çaglarirmak, NBACKGROUND: The physical properties, proximate composition, mineral and vitamin contents, and estimated volatile components of Portobello mushroom, Agaricus bisporus (brown), were analyzed in three flushes and at two different harvest times. The results showed different trends in the flushes and harvest terms studied. RESULTS: The mean values of texture, diameter, and protein of the harvested produce were 1.78-1.97 kg mm(-2) 4.67 - 5.02 cm, and 4.18-3.31% wet weight basis (wb), respectively. The mean Zn, Fe, P, Mg, K, Na, and Ca contents of both harvests (mg kg(-1) wb) were 8.15-7.07,7.40-7.96, 1180.93-1038.69, 88.05-76.29, 213.29-238.82, 2652.0-2500.89, and 534.2-554.80, respectively. In terms of vitamin C, folic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin, the mean contents (mg kg(-1) wb) were 6.75-3.97, 0.09-0.08, 0.085-0.09, 0.27-0.29, and 3.62-2.94, respectively. The estimated volatile components comprised 18- or 16-carbon compounds such as octadecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid derivatives, and other important volatiles like di-limonene, n-nonane, benzendicarboxylic acid, and cis-linoleic acid esters. CONCLUSION: Nutritive contents and estimated volatiles of Portobello mushroom were evaluated in detail at different stages. (C) 2009 Society of Chemical Industry
