Clinical, radiological appearance and treatment of these lesions discussed with literature review. © The Author(s) 2014.Item Increased mean platelet volume in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy(SAGE Publications Inc., 2014) Icli A.; Aksoy F.; Dogan A.; Arslan A.; Akcay S.; Yücel H.; Ersoy I.; Gorgulu O.Thromboembolic events may be seen in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We investigated the mean platelet volume (MPV), an indicator of platelet activation in patients with HCM. This study included 112 patients with HCM, in which 40 were patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and 106 were control participants. The MPV was significantly higher in patients with HCM than in controls (9.1 ± 0.3 vs 7.9 ± 0.3 fL, P =.01). In the subgroup analyses, MPV was also higher in patients with HOCM compared to those with hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HNCM; 9.3 ± 0.3 vs 9.0 ± 0.2 fL, P =.01). Similarly, patients with HNCM had higher MPV values than controls (9.0 ± 0.2 vs 7.9 ± 0.3 fL, P =.01). The MPV was significantly and positively correlated with left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction (r =.42, P =.001) and septal thickness (r =.62, P =.001). In linear regression analysis, MPV was independently associated only with septal thickness (β =.07, 95% confidence interval: 0.04-0.09, P =.001). The MPV can be elevated in patients with HCM regardless of the obstruction of LVOT and may be associated with the severity of septal thickness. © The Author(s) 2013.Item Natural vibration behaviors of heterogeneous porous materials in micro scale(SAGE Publications Inc., 2014) Altintas G.Natural porous materials have a large area of usage, from micromechanical designs to medical applications, due to their geometrical forms and chemical properties. Mechanical properties of porous materials are usually performed after several homogenized applications because of their complex geometric forms. It is known that usage of homogenized details of microarchitecture in macro structural analyses provides savings in terms time and computational effort. However, realistic analyses are performed by including microarchitectural details in models, due to advancing technology and reverse engineering techniques. In this study, modal properties of a porous structure are investigated by taking microstructural details into consideration according to the voxel-based finite element model, and significant modal behavior properties, which cannot be observed in routine modal analyses, are determined. In addition, analyses using the homogenized model of porous structure are performed, and it is seen that the obtained results are not only different numerically but also have different modal behavior from the porous model. Special modes, defined as local modes, which are not seen in homogenized models, are observed in models by using the voxel-based finite element method and analyses are comprehensively performed. © The Author(s) 2013.Item Psychometric Properties of the Oncology Module of the KINDL Scale: First Results(SAGE Publications Inc., 2015) Ergin D.; Eser E.; Kantar M.; Ekti Genç R.Purpose. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Oncology module of the generic KINDL scale (having 24 items with 6 domains). Methods. The psychometric properties of the KINDL Oncology module were evaluated from the aspect of internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity on an inpatient sample of 103 Turkish children (mean age 10.0 ± 4.01 years) who had various oncological disorders. Results. The KINDL Oncology module (24 items) showed acceptable α coefficients ranging from.57 (physical well-being) to.87 (treatment) for each domain. In confirmatory factor analysis of the original 4-domain structure, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation was found as.086, and Comparative Fit Index was.87. Good known groups results supported the construct validity of the instrument. Correlations between the domains of the mother KINDL and the domains of its oncology module were significantly high, indicating a satisfactory convergent validity. Conclusion. The Turkish version of the KINDL Oncology module showed good reliability and questionable validity in this study. However, further research on other language versions of the module is needed for its global use. © 2014 by Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology NursesItem Evaluation of clinical course and neurocognition in children with self-limited infantile epilepsy in a turkish cohort study(SAGE Publications Inc., 2015) Bozaykut A.; Aksoy H.U.; Sezer R.G.; Polat M.The outcome of children with self-limited infantile epilepsy was reported to be normal psychosocial and cognitive development as a characteristic criterion. We aimed to investigate the clinical course and neurocognitive outcome in children with self-limited infantile epilepsy in a Turkish cohort. The clinical course, electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics, neuroimaging, treatment, and outcome of children with self-limited infantile epilepsy were retrospectively analyzed. All infants were reevaluated with the Denver Developmental Screening Test in addition to neurologic examination. Of 44 patients, self-limited familial infantile epilepsy was diagnosed in 8 infants (18.2%) and self-limited nonfamilial infantile epilepsy in 28 (63.6%). Interictal EEGs and neurologic examinations were normal in all cases. Fine motor and gross motor skills, language, adaptive personal/social skills were near-normal in all patients with self-limited familial infantile epilepsy. Delay in language parameters was observed in 2 infants with self-limited nonfamilial infantile epilepsy. Language skills should be thoroughly evaluated with detailed neurocognitive screening tests in patients with self-limited infantile epilepsy. © The Author(s) 2014.Item Relationship between Socio-Demographic Features, Work-Related Conditions, and Level of Anxiety among Turkish Primary Health Care Workers(SAGE Publications Inc., 2015) Picakciefe M.; Turgut A.; Igneci E.; Cayli F.; Deveci A.The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among Turkish primary health care workers' socio-demographic characteristics, working conditions, and anxiety. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 88 of 103 (85.4%) eligible health care workers from the city of Mugla participating. The participants' average age was 31 years, 85.2% were university graduates, 30.7% were nurses, and 64.8% had been working between 11 and 20 years at the time of the study; 93.6% worked 8 hours each day or less. State anxiety scores for males (p =.016), health care workers age 31 or older (p =.035), nurse participants (p =.043), and individuals who had worked 11 or more years (p =.044) were significantly higher than the rest of the sample; however, trait anxiety scores for participants who did not work overtime and were not scheduled for shift work were significantly higher (p =.033 and p =.004, respectively) than the rest of the sample. According to the logistic regression analysis, risk factors for anxiety included being male and older than 31 years. © American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.Item Determinants of Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Uptake among Women in Turkey(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Sözmen K.; Unal B.; Sakarya S.; Dinc G.; Yardim N.; Keskinkilic B.; Ergör G.The aim of the study was to assess the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on breast and cervical cancer screening among women 30 years and older in Turkey. We used data from the National Chronic Diseases and Risk Factors Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2011. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of sociodemographic factors, lifestyle variables, and cancer screening. Overall, 22.0% of women ever had a Pap smear test for cervical cancer screening and 19.0% ever had a mammography for breast cancer screening(n = 6846). Individuals with a university degree, social security, doing moderate physical activity, and consuming 5 portions of fruit or vegetable/day were more likely to receive Pap smear test and mammography. Residing in the eastern region and living in rural area was associated with lower likelihood of receiving both types of screening. © 2016 APJPH.Item Thromboelastogram reduces blood use by inspecting coagulation in heart surgery(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Yildirim F.; Tuncer B.; Ozbakkaloglu A.; Kurdal A.T.; Ozturk T.; Iskesen I.Objective Blood transfusion after coronary artery bypass surgery is carried out according to general coagulation tests and blood counts. Our aim was to determine the effects of rotational thromboelastography results on the amount of blood products used in the intraoperative and postoperative periods in coronary artery bypass patients. Methods Our study included 164 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass. A control group was formed from 82 patients picked from hospital records, who had elective coronary artery bypass before the introduction of rotational thromboelastography in our clinic. Blood transfusion was performed in this group according to conventional laboratory data. The study group comprised 82 patients who had elective coronary artery bypass after the introduction of rotational thromboelastography. Blood transfusion was performed in the study group according to rotational thromboelastogram results. The amounts of blood products used in the 2 groups were compared. Results There were statistically significant decreases in the intraoperative and postoperative amounts of packed red blood cells (p = 0.012 and p = 0.006) and postoperative whole blood (p = 0.013) used in the study group compared to the control group. Postoperative bleeding was also significantly reduced (p = 0.001) in the study group. Conclusion Blood transfusion is an important issue after coronary artery bypass, and because of the decreased amount of blood products used, a rotational thromboelastography-based blood transfusion algorithm should be applied in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass. © 2014 SAGE Publications.Item POMC expression of the urothelium of the urinary bladder of mice submitted to pelvic radiation(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Ozbilgin M.K.; Aktas C.; Temel M.; Önal T.; Uluer E.T.; Vatansever H.S.; Kurtman C.Objective: Patients who have had pelvic radiotherapy as part of their cancer therapy may develop subsequent urinary bladder injury. The acute changes that the urothelium undergo after radiation are known, but the healing mechanism of the urothelium of the urinary bladder after pelvic radiotherapy is not clearly understood. Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) peptides, which have immunomodulatory effects, are produced locally in sites outside of the central nervous system. This study aims to determine the role of POMC expression in the urothelium during radiation injury. Methods: Twenty-four male Swiss Albino mice were divided into four groups. A single-fractioned 10 Gy of ionizing radiation was applied to the pelvic zone of all mice with Cobalt-60 radiotherapy. The first group 1, which consisted intact animal and not irradiated was the control group, and the second, third, and fourth groups were euthanized after 24 h (Group 2), 48 h (Group 3), and 7 days (Group 4) after irradiation. All bladders were prepared for histochemical analysis using hematoxylin eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical analysis using anti-POMC antibody. Results: No morphological differences were seen in all the group samples stained with H&E. POMC expression of the urothelium of bladder tissue samples shows different staining levels. Group 1 (96.7 ± 7.68), Group 2 (88.3 ± 8.04), and Group 3 (85.10 ± 10.9) were very weakly stained, but the POMC immunoreactivity of Group 4 (113.0 ± 12.8) was observed to be strong. Conclusion: Expression of POMC from urothelium seems to prevent bladder damage from radiation supplying differentiation and restoration of the urothelium. © 2016 The Author(s).Item A Matter of Psychological Safety: Commitment and Mental Health in Turkish Immigrant Employees in Germany(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Ulusoy N.; Mölders C.; Fischer S.; Bayur H.; Deveci S.; Demiral Y.; Rössler W.Immigration entails the risk of feeling disconnected in the receiving society, in both everyday life and the workplace. This may affect the way immigrant employees relate to their job and their workplace. In this article, we investigate the affective commitment of Turkish immigrant employees in Germany (TG) and their subsequent work engagement, mental health, and turnover intention. Specifically, we compared TG (n = 201) to both German employees in Germany (GG; n = 1,406) and Turkish employees in Turkey (TT; n = 362). Our results show that the effect of immigration background on mental health, work engagement, and turnover through affective commitment depends on the level of perceived psychological safety at the workplace, specifically in terms of an open and inclusive work climate. The results suggest that psychological safety is particularly helpful in enhancing immigrant employees’ positive attitudes toward the workplace. Our study provides new insights on the well-being of immigrant employees, specifically TG, and the different needs of diverse workforces. Given our findings, future studies should explore more deeply the positive influences that psychological safety has on minority groups and their workplace attitudes. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.Item Ultrasound assisted extraction of polysaccharides from hazelnut skin(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Yilmaz T.; Tavman Ş.In this study ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) of polysaccharides from hazelnut skin has been studied. Optimum sonication time has been evaluated depending on responses such as amount of carbohydrate and dried sample and thermogravimetric analysis. Chemical and structural properties of extracted material have been determined by Fourier transform spectroscopy attenuated-total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. Pretreated hazelnut skin powders were extracted in distilled water. Mixture was sonicated by ultrasonic processor probe for 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min. The results of UAE showed that maximum ethanol insoluble extracts in 60 min and the highest dry matter content could be obtained in 120 min extraction. Although total carbohydrate content of ethanol insoluble dry extract decreased with time, total carbohydrate in ethanol soluble fraction increased. Polysaccharides extracted from hazelnut skin were assumed to be pectic polysaccharide according to the literature survey of FTIR analysis result. Application time of UAE has an important effect on extraction of polysaccharide from hazelnut skin. This affect could be summarized by enhancing extraction yield up to critical level. Decrease of the yield in ethanol insoluble part could be explained by polymer decomposition. Most suitable model was hyperbolic model by having the lowest root mean square error and the highest R2 values. © SAGE Publications.Item Size-dependent vibrations of a micro beam conveying fluid and resting on an elastic foundation(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Kural S.; Özkaya E.In this study, fluid conveying continuous media was considered as micro beam. Unlike the classical beam theory, the effects of shear stress on micro-structure's dynamic behavior not negligible. Therefore, modified couple stress theory (MCST) were used to see the effects of being micro-sized. By using Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear equations of motion for the fluid conveying micro beam were obtained. Micro beam was considered as resting on an elastic foundation. The obtained equations of motion were became independence from material and geometric structure by nondimensionalization. Approximate solutions of the system were achieved with using the multiple time scales method (a perturbation method). The effects of micro-structure, spring constant, the occupancy rate of micro beam, the fluid velocity on natural frequency and solutions were researched. MCST compared with classical beam theory and showed that beam models that based on classical beam theory are not capable of describing the size effects. Comparisons of classical beam theory and MCST were showed in graphics and these graphics also proved that obtained mathematical model suitable for describe the behavior of normal sized beams. © The Author(s) 2015.Item The Effects of Positive and Negative Feedback on Maximal Voluntary Contraction Level of the Biceps Brachii Muscle: Moderating Roles of Gender and Conscientiousness(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Sarıkabak M.; Yaman Ç.; Tok S.; Binboga E.We investigated the effect of positive and negative feedback on maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the biceps brachii muscle and explored the mediating effects of gender and conscientiousness. During elbow flexion, MVCs were measured in positive, negative, and no-feedback conditions. Participants were divided into high- and low-conscientiousness groups based on the median split of their scores on Tatar's five-factor personality inventory. Considering all participants 46 college student athletes (21 female, 28 male), positive feedback led to a greater MVC percentage change (−5.76%) than did negative feedback (2.2%). MVC percentage change in the positive feedback condition differed significantly by gender, but the negative feedback condition did not. Thus, positive feedback increased female athletes’ MVC level by 3.49%, but decreased male athletes’ MVC level by 15.6%. For conscientiousness, MVC percentage change in the positive feedback condition did not differ according to high and low conscientiousness. However, conscientiousness interacted with gender in the positive feedback condition, increasing MVC in high-conscientiousness female athletes and decreasing MVC in low-conscientiousness female athletes. Positive feedback decreased MVC in both high- and low-conscientiousness male athletes. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.Item Atrial fibrillation, progression of coronary atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Bayturan O.; Puri R.; Tuzcu E.M.; Shao M.; Wolski K.; Schoenhagen P.; Kapadia S.; Nissen S.E.; Sanders P.; Nicholls S.J.Background Despite atrial fibrillation representing an established risk factor for stroke, the association between atrial fibrillation and both progression of coronary atherosclerosis and major adverse cardiovascular events is not well characterized. We assessed the serial measures of coronary atheroma burden and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with and without atrial fibrillation. Methods Data were analyzed from nine clinical trials involving 4966 patients with coronary artery disease undergoing serial intravascular ultrasonography at 18-24 month intervals to assess changes in percent atheroma volume (PAV). Using a propensity weighted analysis, and following adjustment for baseline variables, patients with (n = 190) or without (n = 4776) atrial fibrillation were compared with regard to coronary plaque volume and major adverse cardiovascular events (death, myocardial infarction, and stroke). Results Atrial fibrillation patients demonstrated lower baseline PAV (36.0 ± 8.9 vs. 38.1 ± 8.9%, p = 0.002) and less PAV progression (-0.07 ± 0.34 vs. + 0.23 ± 0.34%, p = 0.001) compared with the non-atrial fibrillation group. Multivariable analysis revealed atrial fibrillation to independently predict both myocardial infarction [HR, 2.41 (1.74,3.35), p<0.001] 2.41 (1.74, 3.35), p < 0.00) and major adverse cardiovascular events [HR, 2.2, (1.66, 2.92), p<0.001] 2.20 (1.66, 2.92), p < 0.001]. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that atrial fibrillation compared with non-atrial fibrillation patients had a significantly higher two-year cumulative incidence of overall major adverse cardiovascular events (4.4 vs. 2.0%, log-rank p = 0.02) and myocardial infarction (3.3 vs. 1.5%, log-rank p = 0.05). Conclusions The presence of atrial fibrillation independently associates with a heightened risk of myocardial infarction despite a lower baseline burden and progression rate of coronary atheroma. Further studies are necessary to define the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction in the setting of atrial fibrillation. © European Society of Cardiology.Item Perturbation-iteration method for strongly nonlinear vibrations(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Pakdemirli M.The new perturbation iteration method developed by Pakdemirli and co-workers for regular problems is extended to cover problems with blow up secularities for sufficiently long time intervals. The Duffing equation, the quintic Duffing equation, systems with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities and systems with odd nonlinearities are treated using the new approach. In all cases, the perturbation parameter and/or the nonlinearity coefficients are selected to be large so that the system is strongly nonlinear. Approximate analytical solutions are presented and contrasted with the numerical solutions. It is concluded that the method outlined is reliable for strongly nonlinear equations having constant-amplitude type solutions. © The Author(s) 2015.Item Absenteeism and Delay to Work Due to Sleep Disorders in the Turkish Adult Population: A Questionnaire-Based National Survey(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Firat H.; Yuceege M.; Kiran S.; Akgun M.; Demir A.U.; Aksu M.; Ardic S.; Karadeniz D.; Ucar Z.Z.; Sevim S.; Itil O.; Yilmaz H.Sleep problems may have negative effects on work–life balance, overall health, and safety. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep disorders and absenteeism and delay to work (being late or tardy) among the working adult population. The study was conducted by using data from a large survey of working adults who participated in the Turkish Adult Population Epidemiology of Sleep Study (TAPES) managed by Turkish Sleep Medicine Society (TSMS). Secondary analyses was employed to examine absenteeism and delay to work and their associations with sleep problems, including sleepiness by Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), parasomnias, sleep apnea (by Berlin Questionnaire), sleep quality (by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and restless leg. History of any absenteeism and delay to work was observed in 276 (18%) and 443 (29%) out of 1,533 working adults, respectively. In the multivariate analyses, absenteeism was associated with younger age, female gender and poor sleep quality, while delay to work was associated with younger age, poor sleep quality, parasomnia, and sleepiness. In the presence of absenteeism and delay to work, sleep disorders including sleepiness, poor sleep quality, and parasomnia should be considered. Such evaluation may improve worker well-being and provide some additional benefits in terms of increasing productivity and lowering work-related costs. © 2018 The Author(s).Item Comparison of Glucose Values of Blood Samples Taken in Three Different Ways(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Sagkal Midilli T.; Ergın E.; Baysal E.; Arı Z.The purpose of the study was to determine differences and correlations between the blood glucose values of venous blood and the first and second drops of capillary blood samples taken in three different ways. Blood samples were (a) venous blood, (b) the first and second drops of capillary blood from the middle finger of the right hand (only washed with soap and water), and (c) the first and second drops of capillary blood from the middle finger of the left hand (washed with soap and water and cleaned with alcohol). It was concluded that the fasting capillary blood glucose values could be used in place of venous blood glucose values, that only washing the hands with neutral soap and water for 30 s could be sufficient for capillary blood glucose measurement, and that the first or second blood drop from a clean hand could be used for capillary blood glucose measurement. © The Author(s) 2017.Item Levels of Melatonin in Continuous Spikes and Waves During Sleep(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Ayça S.; Aksoy H.U.; Taştan İ.; Polat M.Levels of melatonin have been reported before in children with epilepsy, but such has not been reported to date in those with continuous spikes and waves during sleep. The aim of the present study was to assess serum melatonin levels and melatonin circadian rhythm in patients with continuous spikes and waves during sleep and epilepsy. Serum melatonin was measured in 39 children stratified into 3 groups. Group 1 included 15 patients with continuous spikes and waves during sleep, group 2 included 12 epilepsy patients, and group 3 included 12 controls, respectively. Blood samples were taken from all participants at 1:00 am and 9:00 am and melatonin levels were measured using a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test. The 9:00 am melatonin levels of group 1 were significantly decreased and pair groups were compared. The P a value (representing a comparison between groups 1 and 2) was.002, the P b value (representing a comparison between groups 1 and 3) was.001, and the P c value (representing a comparison between groups 2 and 3) was.86. These findings suggest that the 9:00 am melatonin levels were significantly decreased in the comparison of groups 2 and 3. Further detailed research is necessary to determine the factors leading to the rapid decline of morning melatonin levels of children with continuous spikes and waves during sleep. © The Author(s) 2019.Item A Determination of Hopelessness and the Perception of Illness in Cancer(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Nehir S.; Tavşanli N.G.; Özdemir Ç.; Akyol T.This study was performed with the objective of determining hopelessness and perception of illness in cancer patients. This was a descriptive and regressional study. The study was performed between January and June 2014 on 105 outpatients at the oncology clinic of Manisa Government Hospital in Turkey’s western. A patient information form, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the illness perception questionnaire were used to collect data, and data analysis was performed using the program Statistical Package for Social Sciences 15.0. Percentages, t test, Kruskal–Wallis, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation were used in the evaluation of research data. The hopelessness levels of cancer patients participating in the study were at a medium level. As patients’ scores on the hopelessness scale and its subscales increase, so their illness perception scores also increase. The hopelessness levels of patients whose illness perception was good were lower; that is, as patients’ hopelessness levels fell, their illness perceptions and view of their illness were affected in a positive way. © The Author(s) 2017.
