Reconciling religion and consumerism: Islamic lifestyle media in Turkey
    (Taylor and Francis, 2019) Sayan-Cengiz F.
This study explores how lifestyle journalism shapes new Muslim subjectivities in a context of surging consumerism and strengthening Islamic bourgeoisie in contemporary Turkey. The study focuses on the Islamic fashion and lifestyle magazine Aysha and draws on a qualitative analysis of the pages offering guidance on religiosity, spirituality and the consumption of leisure. The content of Aysha provides insight about the creative ways in which religion and consumerism are reconciled in Islamic lifestyle media. The study uncovers how the reconciliation is formulated with regard to the relation between religiosity, spirituality and leisure consumption, and argues that Islamic lifestyle media introduces the consumption of luxury leisure as a desirable part of religious and spiritual experiences. Exploring Turkey’s Islamic lifestyle media demonstrates the creative ways in which lifestyle journalism provides narratives that not just express, but also foster new consumerist desires. © 2020 selection and editorial matter, Lucía Vodanovic; individual chapters, the contributors.

    Negative aspects of organizational power
(Taylor and Francis, 2022) Dirik D.
Power has intrigued researchers from various disciplines for centuries, researchers of organizational studies being no exception to its allure. Having been identified as a central element of leadership and management, power has been defined in various ways incorporating soft and hard aspects. This chapter attempts to explore negative aspects of power in the context of organization studies and identify some of the salient organizational repercussions. Following an overview of the conceptual roots of the study of power, the chapter offers a discussion on the most frequently employed power bases by extrapolating their potential implications for the workplace. Later, the chapter offers a general evaluation on power pathologies like hubris syndrome, the abuse of power and resistance as well as how these former associates with bases of power. A systematic discussion on different facades of power will always be relevant and up to date so long as organizations and human societies exist. © 2023 H. Cenk Sözen and H. Nejat Basım.

Social Work Field Instruction in Turkey: Challenges, Problems, and Implications
(Taylor and Francis, 2022) Bolgün C.; Yıldırım B.
Social work is a unique profession with its efforts to improve the welfare of individuals, groups, families and communities under oppression. In this respect, social work education and practice draw attention to the social and environmental factors that create and contribute to the problems in social life. In this context, the quality of social work education is based on two principles, theory and practice. The aim of such education is to provide theoretical knowledge to the social worker and to up-skill to perform. In this process, field instruction plays a critical role. In Turkey, the infrastructure of social work education was created by the United Nations in the late 1950s. Since the beginning, the concept of social work practice has been the subject of many discussions and these discussions also continue in relation to social work field instruction. This chapter discusses the challenges and problems experienced in social work field instruction in Turkey. In this context, structural issues; consultancy and supervision; performance evaluation and education/training indicators; record keeping, reporting and remittance issues are addressed. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Rajendra Baikady, Sajid S.M., Varoshini Nadesan, and M. Rezaul Islam; individual chapters, the contributors.
