A total of 25,843 questionnaires using data from parents of 25,843 primary schoolchildren from 14 cities were evaluated. Mean annual temperature was significantly associated with the prevalence of asthma and wheezing in both sexes [respectively; OR: 1.008 (95% CI: 1.003-1.011) and OR: 1.012 (1.006-1.018 in males), OR: 1.007 (1.003-1.012) and OR: 1.01 (1.002-1.018) in females]. In addition, it was associated with eczema in females [OR: 1.007 (1.001-1.012)]. Asthma in females was associated with mean annual humidity in the air [OR: 1.001 (1.000-1.002)]. Annual number of days with snow is associated with wheezing in both sexes [respectively, OR: 1.001 (1.000-1.002) in males and OR: 1.002 (1.000-1.003) in females]. Protective measures could come into priority in certain areas of the country. Allergic diseases may increase as a cause of climate change in the future. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.Item Indications of bulk property changes from surface ion implantation(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2011) Wang Y.; Yang B.; Can N.; Townsend P.D.In the majority of cases, the effects of ion implantation are confined close to the implant zone but, potentially, the resultant distortions and chemical modifications could catalyse relaxations extending into the bulk substrate. Such possibilities are rarely considered but the present data suggest that high dose ion implantation of ZnO has induced bulk changes. Surface implants with Cu and Tb strongly modified the low temperature bulk thermoluminescence properties generated by X-ray irradiation. Suggestions are proposed for the possible mechanisms for bulk relaxations and structural characteristics, which may indicate where such instability may occur in other lattice structures. © 2011 Taylor & Francis.Item Effect of yearly conditions and management practices on ochratoxin a production in sultana seedless vineyards(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2012) Meyvaci K.B.; Aksoy U.; Eltem R.; Altindili A.; Akun T.; Takin E.Sun drying of seedless grapes (Vitis vinifera cv. Sultanina) is widely practised in the western Aegean Region providing Turkey with a significant share in the world trade of sultanas. Research was initiated in 1998 to determine the incidence of ochratoxin A (OTA), to identify the major factors resulting in contamination and to develop techniques to reduce or prevent contamination. This paper assesses OTA formation in five experimental vineyards located in Manisa province of Turkey between 1998 and 2003. The cultural practices recorded were tillage (type and timing), fertilisation, plant protection, irrigation, trellising, pruning, GA3 application, harvest maturity and date, and drying practices (type of drying yard, dipping into alkaline solution, length of drying period). In the experimental vineyards, no OTA was found at veraison. OTA levels in grapes harvested at fresh maturity ranged betweenItem Changes in α-, β-, γ- And δ-tocopherol contents of mostly consumed vegetable oils during refining process(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2014) Ergönül P.G.; Köseoǧlu O.In this study, the effect of different steps in both chemical and physical refining process on tocopherol contents of several vegetable oils (sunflower oil, corn oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil and refined-bleached- deodorized (RBD) palm oil) was investigated. The most commonly tocopherols found in vegetable oils were α- and γ-tocopherols. Soybean contains 1328 mg/kg tocopherol, which is highest among plant oils. Total tocopherol contents gradually decreased until the end of the refining processes in all oil types. The content of α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherols also decreased during refining. These significant losses occurred especially after the deodorizing stage. © 2013 © 2013 Taylor & Francis.Item Microwave imaging with a time-reversed finite-difference time-domain technique(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2014) Bardak C.; Saed M.A novel approach to microwave imaging in three dimensions based on time-reversed finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD-TR) is presented. The proposed computationally efficient technique allows the reconstruction of detailed images of scattering objects. Transmissions as well as reflection imaging modalities in the near-field and far-field were investigated. In this study, we implemented the FDTD-TR algorithm in three dimensions using time-reversed convolutional perfectly matching layers as boundaries to truncate the simulation domain. The method works for dielectric as well as conducting objects. The methods capabilities in imaging multiple objects and behind-the-wall imaging are also presented. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis.Item Aflatoxin M1 in Tarhana chips(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2014) Özçam M.; Obuz E.; Tosun H.Tarhana chips are a popular traditional fermented food consumed widely in the Kahramanmaraş region of Turkey. Tarhana chips are different from many other types of fermented food in that they are produced in the form of tortilla chips. Cereal and yoghurt are the main ingredients in Tarhana chips. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) levels in dairy and dairy-based products are of concern for human health. To investigate AFM1 contamination, a total of 40 samples were collected from Kahramanmaraş region and AFM1 levels were determined by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Furthermore, physicochemical characteristics of Tarhana chips were investigated and compared with classic fried chips in terms of nutritional value. Based on data obtained from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, 21 (52.5%) out of 40 samples contained AFM1 in the range 0.5-36.6 ng/kg, so AFM1 levels of all samples were below the legal limit. © 2014 ©2014 Taylor & Francis.Item Cytological study on Hippocrepis ciliata L. and Hippocrepis unisiliquosa ssp. unisiliquosa L. Steaks were packed under air (control), vacuum, MAP1 (60:40/O2:CO2) and MAP2 (60:20:20/O2:CO2:N2) conditions. Packed steak samples were stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 35 days. Physical, chemical (headspace gas analysis, weight loss, water holding capacity, Warner-Bratzler shear force, instrumental color measurement, pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), myoglobin content) and sensory color analyses were performed. It was determined that vacuum packaging reduced the weight losses during the storage. In terms of sensory color evaluation, the best results were observed in vacuum packed samples. TBARS values were increased in all samples during the storage time. In terms of lipid oxidation level, it was defined that vacuum packed samples might provide the longest shelf life. Interaction of packaging method and storage time affected the shear force values significantly (P < 0.001). The interaction of packaging method and storage day affected the L∗, a∗, b∗ values of the beef steaks significantly (P < 0.001). © 2014 Taylor & Francis.Item The effect of different filter aid materials and winterization periods on the oxidative stability of sunflower and corn oils(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Gunc Ergönül P.; Nergiz C.The effects of different filter aid materials at different ratios (0.3% or 0.6%, w/w) and three different (6 h, 12 h, 24 h) winterization times, on free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide, iodine, p-anisidine and conjugated diene values and copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni) levels of sunflower and corn oils were studied. FFA amounts of both sunflower and corn oils showed no significant changes during winterization process. However, peroxide, p-anisidine and conjugated diene values increased during winterization due to the holding time in winterized tank and atmospheric conditions. Iodine values of oils increased as unsaturation rises. In respect of trace metals, the increase in copper and iron levels was found higher than the increase of nickel level. © 2014 Taylor and Francis.Item Numerical Study and POD-Based Prediction of Natural Convection in a Ferrofluids-Filled Triangular Cavity with Generalized Neural Networks(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Selimefendigil F.; Öztop H.F.The effects of a magnetic dipole source on the natural convection of ferrofluids in a triangular cavity are studied. A partial heater is added to the left vertical wall of the cavity while the right vertical wall is kept at the constant temperature. A magnetic dipole source is placed outside the cavity close to the heater. The governing equations of a coupled multi-physics system are solved with a commercial solver using the finite element method. Computations are performed for different ranges of parameters: Rayleigh number (104 ≤ Ra ≤ 106), strength of the magnetic dipole (0 ≤ γ ≤ 8), horizontal and vertical location of the magnetic dipole (-2.5H ≤ a ≤ -0.5H, 0.2H ≤ b ≤ 0.8H). It is observed that the interaction between natural convection and ferrofluid convection under the influence of magnetic dipole affects the flow and thermal field in such the triangular enclosure. The external magnetic field acts in such a way to decrease local heat transfer in some locations and increase it in others for certain combinations of flow parameters and therefore it can be used as a control parameter for fluid flow and heat transfer. Furthermore, an interpolation method based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Generalized Neural Networks is proposed to predict the thermal performance of the system. This approach gives satisfactory results in terms of local and averaged heat transfer values. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Item A new species of Tetartopeus Czwalina, 1888 from Turkey, and some additional records from the West Palaearctic region (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Paederinae)(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Anlaş S.Tetartopeus frischi sp. n. from the Uşak Province in western Anatolia, Turkey, is described and illustrated. The physical, chemical, and biochemical properties of the immobilized laccase and its application in phenol removal were comprehensively investigated. The structure and morphology of the composite beads were characterized by SEM, TGA, and FTIR analyses. The immobilized laccase showed better storage stability and higher tolerance to the changes in pH and temperature compared with free laccase. Moreover, the immobilized laccase retained more than 75% of its original activity after 10 cycles. The efficiency of phenol removal by immobilized laccase was about 80% under the optimum conditions after 4 h. Various scaffolds are available for bone reconstruction by tissue engineering. Osteoblastic differentiated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) promote osteogenesis on scaffolds and stimulate bone regeneration. We investigated the use of cultured autologous BMSC on different scaffolds for healing defects in tibias of adult male canines. BMSC were isolated from canine humerus bone marrow, differentiated into osteoblasts in culture and loaded onto porous ceramic scaffolds including hydroxyapatite 1, hydroxyapatite gel and calcium phosphate. Osteoblast differentiation was verified by osteonectine and osteocalcine immunocytochemistry. The scaffolds with stromal cells were implanted in the tibial defect. Scaffolds without stromal cells were used as controls. Sections from the defects were processed for histological, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical and histomorphometric analyses to analyze the healing of the defects. BMSC were spread, allowed to proliferate and differentiate to osteoblasts as shown by alizarin red histochemistry, and osteocalcine and osteonectine immunostaining. Scanning electron microscopy showed that BMSC on the scaffolds were more active and adhesive to the calcium phosphate scaffold compared to the others. Macroscopic bone formation was observed in all groups, but scaffolds with stromal cells produced significantly better results. Bone healing occurred earlier and faster with stromal cells on the calcium phosphate scaffold and produced more callus compared to other scaffolds. Tissue healing and osteoblastic marker expression also were better with stromal cells on the scaffolds. Increased trabecula formation, cell density and decreased fibrosis were observed in the calcium phosphate scaffold with stromal cells. Autologous cultured stromal cells on the scaffolds were useful for healing of canine tibial bone defects. The calcium phosphate scaffold was the best for both cell differentiation in vitro and bone regeneration in vivo. It may be possible to improve healing of bone defects in humans using stem cells from bone marrow. © 2015 The Biological Stain Commission.Item Error analysis of the Chebyshev collocation method for linear second-order partial differential equations(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Yuksel G.; Isik O.R.; Sezer M.The purpose of this study is to apply the Chebyshev collocation method to linear second-order partial differential equations (PDEs) under the most general conditions. The method is given with a priori error estimate which is obtained by polynomial interpolation. The residual correction procedure is modified to the problem so that the absolute error may be estimated. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is illustrated in several numerical experiments such as Laplace and Poisson equations. Numerical results are overlapped with the theoretical results. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.Item Relationship of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and procalcitonin levels with the presence and severity of the preeclampsia(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Artunc-Ulkumen B.; Guvenc Y.; Goker A.; Gozukara C.Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in maternal serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and procalcitonin (PCT) concentrations in preeclampsia.Material and method: This case-control study consisted of 40 preeclamptic and 40 healthy singleton pregnancies matched for age and body mass index. Serum NGAL and PCT levels were compared between the groups. Diagnostic performance and clinical association of these markers were evaluated. Results: NGAL and PCT concentrations were significantly higher in preeclamptic group (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.001, respectively) and their levels were correlated with the severity of the preeclampsia. There were significant positive correlation between these markers and mean arterial pressure (MAP) and spot urine protein excretion. There was negative correlation between NGAL and apgar scores and fetal birth weight. Pregnancies with higher NGAL (OR: 4.89; 95% CI: 1.81-13.21) and higher PCT (OR: 6.67; 95% CI: 2.44-18.21) concentrations had higher risk for preeclampsia. Conclusion: NGAL and PCT may be potential biomarkers for preeclampsia. Their levels increase significantly in preeclampsia and they are related to the severity of the disease. These results are in agreement with the generalized endothelial damage and persistant inflammatory status in preeclampsia. NGAL may also be an indicator for adverse neonatal outcomes with decreased placental hypoperfusion. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd.Item Effects of selenium on endothelial dysfunction and metabolic profile in low dose streptozotocin induced diabetic rats fed a high fat diet(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Ozturk Z.; Gurpinar T.; Vural K.; Boyacioglu S.; Korkmaz M.; Var A.Endothelial dysfunction develops as a result of oxidative stress and is responsible for diabetic vascular complications. We investigated the effects of selenium on endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: controls, untreated diabetics, and diabetics treated with 180, 300, 500 mcg/kg selenium each day. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of low dose streptozotocin to rats fed a high fat diet. Endothelium-dependent and-independent relaxations were measured in the thoracic aorta. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) mRNA expressions were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, lipid oxidation, insulin and nitric oxide were measured in blood samples. Malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase levels were measured in liver samples. RT-PCR showed that selenium reversed increased NADPH oxidase expression and decreased eNOS expression to control levels. Selenium also improved the impairment of endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in the diabetic aorta. Selenium treatment significantly decreased blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and enhanced the antioxidant status in diabetic rats. Our findings suggest that selenium restores a normal metabolic profile and ameliorates vascular responses and endothelial dysfunction in diabetes by regulating antioxidant enzyme and nitric oxide release. © 2015 The Biological Stain Commission.Item New records of marine water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia, Pontarachnidae) from the eastern Mediterranean Sea (̄zmir Bay, Turkey)(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Koc K.; Turksel M.; Pešic V.[No abstract available]Item Influence of Seawater on the Suction and Swelling Behavior of Clayey Soils(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Pulat H.F.; Yukselen-Aksoy Y.The present study examines the suction characteristics and swelling behavior of clayey soils when exposed to natural seawater with respect to distilled water. The effects of saline waters on the engineering behavior of soils need to be determined since the salinity of the pore fluid of soils near coastal areas increases continuously. Six clayey soil samples with different mineralogy and characteristics were gathered and tested to determine the suction and swelling characteristics in the presence of natural seawater and distilled water. The results show that the total suction values of the samples are higher in the presence of seawater than in distilled water. The samples with high swelling potential have lower matric suction values than nonswelling soils. Moreover, in contrast to swelling-type soils, the matric suction values of the nonswelling soils remain similar in the presence both distilled water and seawater. The modified free swell index (MFSI) of the samples is well correlated with the liquid limit (LL), plasticity index (PI), and cation exchange capacity (CEC) in distilled water. However, coefficients of determination decreased in the presence of seawater. Also, there is no significant correlation existing between total and matric suction values and the MFSI values of the samples. © 2015, Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Item A karyological study on taxa of Coronopus D.C. section of Plantago L. genus (Plantaginaceae) in Turkey(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2015) Bozdağ B.; Sepet H.; Özdemir C.In this study the chromosome number and morphology of five taxa of the Coronopus D.C. section – Plantago coronopus subsp. coronopus L., P. coronopus subsp. commutata (GUSS.)
