Item Analysis of job-related risks faced by hospital nurses(2004) Karadeniz G.; Gündüz T.; Altiparmak S.; Yanikkerem E.The aim of this study was to analyze the job-related risks nurses face during training such as needlestick i njuries, contaminated blood and infectious fluids. From May to July 2003 we conducted a survey of a sample of 242 nurses who were working in the the Pediatric Hospital, Government Hospital, the Training Hospital of Celal Bayar University, the Gynecology Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital in Manisa City in Turkey. Two hundred sixteen nurses (89.3%) had needlestick injuries and 107 (44.2%) had Injuries by contaminated cutting utensils. A total of 104 nurses (43.0%) used gloves, while 65 (26.9%) used gloves and mask. In medical and surgical staff nurses, injuries due to contaminated cutting utensils were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Awareness of accidents was significant between the two groups (p < 0.05).Item Evaluation of silicosis in ceramic workers; [Seramik fabrikasi işçilerinde silikozis.](2005) Sakar A.; Kaya E.; Celik P.; Gencer N.; Temel O.; Yaman N.; Sepit L.; Yildirim C.A.; Dagyildizi L.; Coşkun E.; Dinç G.; Yorgancioglu A.; Cimrin A.H.This study is aimed to evaluate the incidence of silicosis and the relation of it with personal and work-related factors among workers exposed to silica in ceramic factory. Workers were evaluated by respiratory symptoms, physical examination, pulmonary function and radiological findings. Occupational and Enviromental Pulmonary Disease Evaluation Questionnaire of the Turkish Thoracic Society Enviromental and Occupational Pulmonary Diseases Working Group was used. 365 of 626 workers had exposure to silica and the rest 261 were concerned as control group. There was no difference between mean age, duration of work and smoking pack year among the groups (p> 0.05). Cough and sputum rates were higher in silicosis group FEV1 and FVC values were lower in silica group but this was not statistically significant. When the two subgroups of silica group (the workers in high dust concentration and the ones in low concentration) were compared, the high concentrated group had significantly more sputum but the other symptoms and pulmonary functional parameters were not different significantly. 24 workers had parenchymal densities adjusted with pneumoconiosis. The workers with the pneumoconistic finding, had a higher mean age and longer duration of work. As a conclusion, ceramic industry has risk for silicosis. And the risk increase by time and age.Item Occupational asthma in welders and painters(Ankara University, 2010) Temel O.; Şakar Coşkun A.; Yaman N.; Sarioǧlu N.; Alkaç Ç.; Konyar I.; Özgen Alpaydin A.; Çelik P.; Cengiz Özyurt B.; Keskin E.; Yorgancioǧlu A.We aimed to investigate the frequency of occupational asthma (OA) and the factors associated with OA development in a bicycle factory, subsequently after the diagnosis of OA in three workers at the same department. Forty one welders, 23 painters and 46 controls (office workers), a total number of 110 cases were included in the study. Turkish Thoracic Society Occupational and Environmental Diseases Evaluation Questionnaire and physical examination, chest-X ray, pulmonary function tests were performed as needed. Peak expiratory flow (PEF) follow-up was done in welders and painters. Cases having symptoms related with work and ≥ 20% PEF variability were diagnosed as OA. Wheezing were more frequent in welders and painters than the control group, although there wasn't a statisticall significance. Dyspnea, cough and sputum production were more frequent in welders and painters with respect to controls (p< 0.05). Nine (22%) welder, 4 (18%) painter were diagnosed as OA. Working duration of welders and painters with OA (72, 156 months, respectively) were longer than the welders and painters without OA (45, 76 months, respectively), but it did not have any statistically significance. We suggest that working in welding and painting departments may cause respiratory symptoms and OA.Item Effects of participatory ergonomic intervention on the development of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and disability in office employees using a computer(Japan Society for Occupational Health, 2016) Baydur H.; Ergör A.; Demiral Y.; Akalin E.Objective: To evaluate the participatory ergonomic method on the development of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and disability in office employees. Methods: This study is a randomized controlled intervention study. It comprised 116 office workers using computers. Those in the intervention group were taught office ergonomics and the risk assessment method. Cox proportional hazards model and generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were used. Results: In the 10-month postintervention follow-up, the possibility of developing symptoms was 50.9%. According to multivariate analysis results, the possibility of developing symptoms on the right side of the neck and in the right wrist and hand was significantly less in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Neck disability/symptom scores over time were significantly lower in the intervention group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The participatory ergonomic intervention decreases the possibility of musculoskeletal complaints and disability/symptom level in office workers. © 2016, Journal of Occupational Health.
