Item Low back pain and posture(1999) Tüzün Ç.; Yorulmaz I.; Cindaş A.; Vatan S.This study was designed to analyse postural aberrations of the back and lower back region in patients with acute and chronic low back pain and to investigate the accordance of clinical and radiological assessments. Fifty patients with acute and 50 with chronic low back pain and 50 controls were studied and a detailed spinal physical examination was performed. In addition, the angles of thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis and sacral inclination were assessed radiologically. Differences among the three groups, correlations of radiological parameters with each other and with clinical parameters such as age, gender and body mass index, and the accordance of clinical and radiological postural assessments were investigated. It was concluded that there were no statistically significant differences among the groups for angles of thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis and sacral inclination; however, we found significant correlations among all radiological parameters, especially between lumbar lordosis and sacral inclination. Both lumbar lordosis and sacral inclination were increased with body mass index, and lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis were increased with age. Clinical assessments of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis were not in accordance with radiological assessments.Item A radiologico-anatomical comparative study of the cochlear aqueduct(W.B. Saunders Ltd, 2000) Tekdemir I.; Aslan A.; Ersoy M.; Karahan S.T.; Tellioglu C.Aim: A comparative radiologico-anatomical study of the cochlear aqueduct (CA) was performed. Materials and Methods: Eight cadavers and 23 dry temporal bones were studied. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was carried out on each cadaver before microdissection. Microdissection was carried out in a plane parallel to the HRCT sections. Results: The CA was found to be located an average of 7 mm inferior to the internal acoustic meatus and at the superior edge of the jugular foramen. The external aperture of the CA was triangular in shape in 18 bones (78.3%). The petrosal fossa was located just inferior to the external aperture and housed the glossopharyngeal nerve, which had an incomplete bony canal in four bones (17.4%) and a complete bony canal in three bones (13%). It was possible to demonstrate the petrosal portion of the CA on both coronal and axial HRCT. The otic capsule segment of the CA was impossible to demonstrate on coronal sections. Conclusion: The CA cannot be visualized in only one section of the plane in HRCT. Both the otic capsule and petrosal segments can be demonstrated on axial HRCT. © 2000 The Royal College of Radiologists.Item Intra-articular fractures of the tibial plafond. A comparison of the results using articulated and ring external fixators(2004) Okcu G.; Aktuglu K.We retrospectively reviewed 60 fractures of the tibial plafond treated by either an ankle-sparing diaphyseal-epiphyseal technique using the Ilizarov ring fixator or by an ankle-spanning technique using a monolateral articulated external fixator. The Ilizarov ring fixator was applied in 24 fractures and the monolateral articulated transarticular external fixator in 20. Both techniques were combined with limited open reduction and internal fixation of the articular surface if necessary. Between three and nine years after the injury, all patients returned for clinical and radiological assessment and evaluation of ankle function using the modified Mazur score. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of age, gender, mechanism of injury, type of fracture or length of follow-up. The mean functional ankle score was 86 points for the Ilizarov group and 82 points for the articulated fixator group. The difference was not significant (p = 0.07). There were no significant differences between the groups with regard to the radiographic score and late complications. Patients treated with the Ilizarov ring fixator had significantly better ankle and subtalar movement. We conclude that both techniques of external fixation are satisfactory methods of treatment for fractures of the tibial plafond, but that the total arc of movement of the joint is preserved better without bridging the ankle. © 2004 British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery.Item Myelofibrosis associated with severe vitamin D deficiency rickets(Cambridge Medical Publications, 2005) Balkan C.; Ersoy B.; Nese N.Myelofibrosis is a rare disorder in childhood. In this report, we present the case of a 6-month-old infant with myelofibrosis due to severe vitamin D deficiency rickets. The characteristic clinical and laboratory findings of myelofibrosis improved rapidly after vitamin D therapy. In developing countries, nutritional rickets is still an important health problem. Rickets is not only a skeletal system-related disorder, it is also a systemic disorder. Rickets should be considered, therefore, as one of the conditions that can lead to severe haematological disorders in infants.Item Femoral and tibial fractures in a child with myelomeningocele(2005) Asirdizer M.; Zeyfeoglu Y.Femoral and tibial fractures can occur from accidents, child abuse or pathological causes. It is often very difficult to distinguish the cause among those cases. Radiological diagnosis may be needed for clinicians and medical examiners in order to assist determining the reason of fractures. In this report, we submit a case with femoral and tibial fractures associated with myelomeningocele. This patient was diagnosed as child abuse by clinicians. On review it was decided that her fractures were not because of non-accidental injury. The values of bone mineral density of the upper limb were low and illness caused her fractures. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd and AFP. Neuropathic arthropathy can be seen in the late phases of the disease, with the most frequent involvement being in the shoulder. Herein, we present a 42-year-old female case who was diagnosed with syringomyelia as well as Arnold-Chiari Syndrome and neuropathic arthropathy. Her initial complaints were painless edema in the right shoulder and elbow, wounds on the tips of her fingers and amputations. She was evaluated both pre- and postoperative periods. It should be kept in mind that neuropathic arthropathy may develop as the initial symptom in spinal cord lesions which progress slowly. ©2013 Turkish League Against Rheumatism. Multiple myeloma is a neoplastic plasma cell disease characterised by bone lesions. In this article, we present the case of a 59-year-old male patient with IBN associated with multiple myeloma, who was admitted to our clinic with right shoulder pain and right arm weakness. He experienced muscle weakness and atrophy in his right arm after a sudden onset of pain attack in the shoulder. Plexus and cervical vertebral MRI showed no pathology. Electrodiagnostic studies showed upper and middle trunk plexopathies. Laboratory analysis revealed anaemia, hypercalcaemia, renal dysfunction and monoclonal gammopathy in immunoglobulin electrophoresis. A bone marrow biopsy established the diagnosis of IgG kappa multiple myeloma. This is the first case report that presents the association of multiple myeloma and IBN. © 2017, Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research. In cases of gunshot wounds, a detailed anamnesis should be taken and an examination should be performed, it should be investigated whether the injury caused a bone fracture, and the diagnosis should be confirmed by radiological examinations. With the use of radiological examinations, the direction of the shot can be determined by evaluating the appearance of the metal fragments separated from the bullet core, which crashes into the bone tissue and bone fragments. Radiological imaging of a 32-year-old male patient who was injured in the left leg area with a firearm and was sent to Forensic Medicine Department of Medical School of Manisa Celal Bayar University to determine the shooting direction was evaluated. The case, whose entrance-exit holes were distinguished and the direction of the shot was determined by radiological imaging, is presented to guide the medicolegal evaluation. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi.
