Development of targeted therapies for asthma according to patient-specific needs as well as phenotype-specific clinical trials will be the future of asthma therapy. This review discusses asthma variability, patient-specific needs and specifically planned treatment needs on an individual basis. © 2012 Future Medicine Ltd.
