Double-fed generator-based wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are becoming popular in recent years because of their high reliability, flexibility, fault-tolerant capability, and cost-effectiveness. One of the main factors forcing stability for WECSs is sudden wind speed or direction changes. In this paper, the stator coil arrangement of a double-fed PMSG (DFPMSG) is investigated for extreme wind conditions in terms of grid stability. DFPMSG has dual winding sets named control winding (CW) and power winding (PW). The number of stator coils allocated to a winding set determines its power level. Different power levels of winding sets are analytically analyzed for gust wind speeds according to IEC 61400 standard. © 2022 IEEE.
