Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of education on symptom control, exacerbation frequency and quality of life in asthma patients. The study which was randomize experiment and control was conducted 1 March – 31 December 2011 with 124 asthma patients (62 intervention group and 62 control group), who applied to a training and research hospital’s chest diseases polyclinic in the city of Istanbul. The data was collected using the patient information form, Asthma Control Test, exacerbation frequency questioning form and Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire. The intervention group received education from the nurse researcher at the first meeting and one month later. Both of the groups were evaluated four months after their first meeting. After the education, the intervention group showed improvements in the pulmonary function test parameters, asthma-related symptoms, asthma exacerbation frequency and in all the sub-dimensions of quality of life. Patient education is recommended along with the treatment based on the research results for regularly and effective medication use with symptom control, prevent exacerbations, reduce the exacerbation frequency and for a better quality of life. © 2015, Anatolian Journal of Clinical Investigation.
