Abstract
The cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) is regarded as an exotic berry fruit that is primarily consumed in its natural state and in jam form. The leaves, stem, and even the roots have medicinal properties, and the fruits are abundant in vitamins A and C, minerals like iron and phosphorus, as well as alkaloids, flavonoids, and carotenoids that appeal to consumers seeking a healthier lifestyle. Alkaloids have been discovered in the roots of plants. The root possesses the highest starch content of the vegetative part of the cape gooseberry plant. Also, root pruning is an important step for plant nutrition. This chapter discusses the chemistry of P. peruviana roots. It was also mentioned their bioactive compounds and biological assessment. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved including those for text and data mining AI training and similar technologies.
