Abstract
Recent advances of nanomaterials synthesis and characterization have opened up an opportunity for developing new types of polymer-based membranes with improved surface chemistry for effective water separation processes. This chapter will review the latest development of polymeric membranes incorporating with a wide range of nanomaterials for water and wastewater treatment. More specifically, it will provide an overview on the effects of various nanomaterials on the surface properties of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and how the changes in the membrane surface properties could affect filtration performance with respect to water permeability, solute rejection, antifouling properties, and antibacterial resistances. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
