Fibre-reinforced polymer composites have found various marine infrastructure applications thanks to their superior properties. Despite their advantages, alternatives are being investigated because they are produced from non-renewable materials, and it is not feasible to recycle them after the end of their shelf-life. In the long term, the development and use of recreational maritime activities and products are one of the most critical steps to protect the marine and river environments. The applications of composite materials in the maritime sector have gained potential in the recreational maritime industry, especially with their use in the construction of both motorised and non-motorised sailing boats. Research and development of recyclable composites and biocomposites, as well as new techniques developed for the destruction of boats at the end of their life, lead to minimising emissions and taking a step towards a sustainable marine industry. This study investigated epoxy composite materials reinforced with natural fibres, which can be considered an alternative to petroleum-based reinforcement elements. Natural fibre-reinforced epoxy composite materials used in the maritime industry that can contribute to the sustainability of the marine ecosystem were evaluated, and these materials’ mechanical and thermal properties were presented. © 2024 The right of Chandrasekar Muthukumar, Senthil Muthu Kumar Thiagamani, Senthilkumar Krishnasamy and Ahmad Ilyas Rushdan.
