Item Analysis of job-related risks faced by hospital nursesKaradeniz, G; Gündüz, T; Altiparmak, S; Yanikkerem, EThe aim of this study was to analyze the job-related risks nurses face during training such as needlestick injuries, contaminated blood and infectious fluids. From May to July 2003 we conducted a survey of a sample of 242 nurses who were working in the the Pediatric Hospital, Government Hospital, the Training Hospital of Celal Bayar University, the Gynecology Hospital and the Psychiatric Hospital in Manisa City in Turkey. Two hundred sixteen nurses (89.3%) had needlestick injuries and 107 (44.2%) had injuries by contaminated cutting utensils. A total of 104 nurses (43.0%) used gloves, while 65 (26.9%) used gloves and mask. In medical and surgical staff nurses, injuries due to contaminated cutting utensils were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Awareness of accidents was significant between the two groups (p < 0.05).Item The psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (FACIT-Sp-12) in older adults living in nursing homesAy, S; Gündüz, T; Özyurt, BC; Çoban, A; Piskin, AAObjective: This study was conducted to test the dimensionality, reliability and construct validity of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (FACIT-Sp-12) for Turkish population. Methods: The cross-sectional design research was carried out with the elderly who lived in nursing homes in Manisa (n=133). The data were obtained by using the sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the FACIT-Sp-12 questionnaire reliability was assessed using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability coefficients were assessed with Pearson's correlation. For the validity of the instrument; construct validity, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used. Results: Of the elderly who participated in the study, 60.9% were female, their mean age was 76.12 +/- 10.34. The mean score was 27.09 +/- 8.66 for the overall spiritual well-being scale, and 9.08 +/- 3.56 for the meaning subscale, 8.24 +/- 3.73 for the peace subscale, and 9.76 +/- 4.10 for the faith subscale. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between FACIT-Sp-12 scores and the three subdimensions. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.80 for the overall scale, 0.67 for the meaning subscale, 0.72 for the peace subscale, and 0.79 for the faith subscale. Fit statistics for the FACIT-Sp-12 scale for Turkish community met criteria: CFI= 0.95, RMSEA=0.070, TLI=0.91, SRMR=0.07. The goodness of fit index indicate that the model-data fit is provided for the model tested. Other fit index exhibited an acceptable level (GFI=0.92, RMR=0.063, NFI=0.90, IFI=0.90 and RFI=0.91. Conclusion: In validity analyses, construct validity was considered and tested by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to identify whether or not the three-factor model was verified. As a result, it was determined that the Spiritual WellBeing Scale is a valid and reliable tool and could be used for the elderly living in nursing homes in Turkey.Item Rapid Immunization Scheme for Spouses of Individuals Estabilished as Hepatitis B Carriers during Premarital TestsTosun, S; Yücetürk, M; Dönmez, AB; Gündüz, TBackground. The aim of this study was to monitor the cases identified as hepatitis B carriers during premarital tests, to vaccinate their prospective spouses with a rapid vaccination scheme, and to compare the anti-HBs responses with the traditional vaccination scheme. Methods. Blood samples of 1250 couple spouses were tested for HBsAg and anti-HBs. HBsAg positive cases' fiancees which were found HBV negative were administered a rapid three-dose vaccination scheme on days 0, 7, and 21. Forty controls with similar age and gender were also were administered three doses of the same vaccine. Results. Out of 1250 cases (625 couples), 46 (3.6%) were HBsAg positive, and 40 of them aged between 18 and 39 were admitted to the rapid vaccination program. Conclusion. Upon determination of HBsAg positivity in premarital tests, a rapid vaccination program provides early protection, but the 6th and 12th month vaccinations are also required. Anti-HBs response should be monitored.Item Investigation of Serological Markers for Hepatitis B Virus and Knowledge about Hepatitis B Infection in Hospital StaffAkgül, S; Gündüz, T; Borand, H; Ispir, B; Ötnü, AAHealth care workers are in the high risk group for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge levels about HBV infection and HBV sero-prevalance of the hospital staff in the Government Hospital. Totally 554 workers (377 health care workers, 177 assistant workers for cleaning) filled a questionnaire (including risk factors, methods of prevention, ways of prevention, etc..) and their blood samples were screened for HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc IgG. The screening results were as follows: HBsAg positive cases 2.2%, anti-HBs positive cases 23.8%, the naturally immunized cases 20.2%, sensitive cases for HBV 53.8% and only anti-HBc positive cases 1.9%. In the questionnaire, 164 (29.6%) did not fill or answered as I don't know the question Can you define hepatitis B?, while 390 (70.4%) answered as hepatitis is elevation of bilirubin levels in blood, jaundice and a kind of liver disease. The names of hepatitis viruses were asked, 164 (29.6%) had no idea and 390 (70.4%) answered as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C. Totally 440 (79.4%) knew that hepatitis is a contagious disease and were aware of the risk of their jobs. The question What do you do for prevention from HBV? was answered as nothing by 212 (38.3%), while 98 (17.7%) used gloves and mask, 112 (20.2%) were naturally immunized and 132 (23.8%) were vaccinated before. As the result, health care workers have risk of contamination with HBV and their knowledge about the infection is not enough. Routine serological screening and vaccination in the hospital staff should be performed as a significant prevention method.Item Investigation of the Knowledge Levels about Viral Hepatitis in the Students of School of Health Services and School of Vocational Health ServicesGündüz, T; Güsray, M; Baydur, HThis study is a sectional study, which is applied to a total of 107 class first students educating at Celal Bayar University, School of Health Services and School of Vocational Health Services in October 2002. We aimed to determine the knowledge of the students about hepatitis B and whether or not they have had the opportunity to be screened and to imply the importance of this issue. The students who had viral hepatitis screening tests, who have social insurance, who were greater than 19 years of age, who study at medical laboratory department and who were graduates of school of vocational health services had more knowledge (p< 0.01).Item The prevalence of intestinal parasites and nasal S. aureus carriage among food handlersGündüz, T; Limoncu, ME; Çümen, S; Ari, A; Etiz, S; Tay, Zfood handlers play a major role in the transmission of food-borne diseases, Nasal Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) carriage and intestinal parasitism are important risk factors in contamination. The purpose of the authors' study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and nasal S. aureus carriage among food handlers in Manisa, Turkey, The authors investigated 8,895 people for nasal S. aureus carriage and intestinal parasites. Nasal swab materials and stool samples were examined, and anal cellophane band method was performed. The authors found that S. aureus was isolated in 69 (0.77%) samples. All S. aureus strains were oxacilline sensitive. Intestinal parasites were found in 784 (8.8%) samples. The most common parasites were Entamoeba histolytica (69.9%) and Giardia intestinalis (24.6%). The authors conclude that food handlers should be screened and treated from time to time and that a periodic program of health education on food safety and hygiene should be given.
