Item Evaluation of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with symptomatic rhinitis(Istanbul University Press, 2019) Başer E.; Degirmenci P.B.; Arslan İ.B.; Çukurova İ.Objectives: In this study, we aimed to measure the diagnostic value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in both perennial allergic rhinitis (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) patients during their period of active symptoms. Patients and Methods: A total of 161 patients (101 males, 60 females; mean age 34.0±11.1 years; range, 18 to 56 years) consisting of 70 persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) and 39 NAR patients diagnosed between March 2018 and March 2019 in the adult allergy outpatient clinic, having a Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) of ≥8, and recent complete blood count results available before undergoing any medical treatment and 52 control patients (28 males, 24 females; mean age 31.7±7.8 years; range, 18 to 44 years). The NLR was calculated by dividing the number of neutrophils by the number of lymphocytes. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the age or gender between the groups (p>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the neutrophil, lymphocyte, and NLR between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our study shows that NLR is not a useful tool in the diagnosis and management of treatment in PAR and NAR in adults. © 2019 Behbut Cevanşir Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Society. Patients and Methods: Between March 2011 and December 2013, a total of 39 patients (15 males, 24 females; mean age 52 years; range, 19 to 86 years) who underwent CyberKnife hypofractionated radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Tumor volume calculations were done by manual segmentation. Tumor morphology was classified by arbitrary cystic scaling. Local tumor control, tumor progression, transient swelling rates, and changes in tumor morphology were evaluated. Results: Local tumor control and transient swelling rates were 87% and 46%, respectively. Cystic tumors responded better than solid tumors to treatment as evidenced by volume reduction rates (87% vs. 58%), although local control rates were not significantly different (93% vs. 83%). Transient swelling rates were significantly higher in cystic tumors than in solid tumors (67% vs. 29%). Post-treatment volume changes were not correlated with gender, age group, or pre-procedural tumor volume. Conclusion: CyberKnife radiotherapy is an effective way of achieving local tumor control in patients with vestibular schwannomas. Although higher rates of volumetric regression would be expected in more cystic tumors than more solid tumors, local control rates are similar. © 2019, Istanbul University Press. Patients and Methods: Between August 2011 and August 2012, a total of 69 patients (38 males, 31 females; mean age 28.0 years, range, 18 to 61 years) who underwent surgery for nasal septum deviation were included in this cross-sectional study. All patients underwent skin prick test with environmental allergen mixtures. Cup forceps biopsy samples were obtained from the inferior turbinate during septoplasty. These samples were stained immunohistochemically for occludin, claudin-1, tricellulin, JAM, and ZOs. Staining intensity was graded semi-quantitatively using the H-Score. Results: Of all patients, 14 were atopic. Occludin, claudin-1, and JAM scores were significantly lower in the mucosal samples from atopic patients, compared to the non-atopic patients (median 142.5 vs. 288, 153 vs. 296, and 156 vs. 312, respectively; p<0.001 for all). The ZO-1,-2, and-3 proteins were significantly lower in atopic patients (p<0.001 for all). The tricellulin, located at the intersection of three epithelial cells, was not significantly different between the two groups (208.5 vs. 195, respectively; p=0.686). Conclusion: Expression of the structural proteins of ZO decreases in the upper airways of asymptomatic atopic patients. These findings indicate that ZO may be an important determinant of atopic sensitization and, therefore, may be a potential target in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. © 2019 Behbut Cevanşir Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Society. Materials and Methods: Viability of H69AR cells after Cur exposure (5-100 μg/mL) was evaluated via MTT assay at 24, 48 and 72 h. Apoptosis was assessed via ELISA assay. Apoptosis related proteins of breast cancer cell lines were analyzed by a Human Apoptosis Antibody Array. Protein-protein interactions were analyzed and visualized by using the STRING database. Results: Cur inhibited cell viability and induced apoptosis in H69AR cells. The IC50 value of Cur in H69AR cells was 8.75 μg/ mL. The array results showed that the protein levels of pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bad, Bax, Caspase-3, TRAIL R1, TRAIL R2, FADD, Fas, SMAC/DIABLO, HMOX2 were significantly increased by 2.4-, 3.1-, 2.6-, 3.1-, 3.4-, 2.4-, 2.1-, 4.1- and 5.5-fold in H69AR cells (p<0.05). Moreover, the protein levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins such as Bcl-2, cIAP-1, CLU and HIF1A were significantly decreased by 4.1-, 3.2-, 2.2- and 2.0-fold, respectively in H69AR cells by Cur exposure (p<0.05). Conclusion: Findings of this study suggested that Cur induced apoptosis of human H69AR cells via mediating several proteins involved in both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways. © European Journal of Biology. The fairs in question were places where all the elements reflecting a nation - especially technology, art, culture, and agricultural products - were collected and exhibited. Throughout the 19th century, it was seen that the Ottoman Empire tried to prove its worth in the modern world by participating in these fairs with drawings (including new architectural models inspired by the West and reproductions of these drawings), crafts and agricultural products. One of these was the exhibition held in 1904 for the centenary of the acquisition of the city of St. Louis in America from the French. At the fair in question, the fair committee adopted the theme of the Grand Bazaar and the Turkish Quarter and asked Celal Assad to prepare a construction project on this theme for the promotion of the Ottoman Empire. These drawings, which are in the Atatürk Library of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, are unknown, even though there has been much research and many publications about Celal Assad. In this article, the structures prepared by Celal Esad Arseven in 1903 and exhibited in the Turkish pavilion at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 were examined in the context of world fairs and the representation of the Ottoman Empire in these fairs. © Istanbul University Press. The collection, which was turned into a museum by Haluk Perk in 1995, also includes many different categories of works from the Byzantine Period. In our article, a total of fifteen works from this collection, which give information about the beliefs, ascetic life, cross and pilgrimage concepts in the Byzantine world and how they are reflected in art, are discussed. Of these works, which are dated back to different periods of the Byzantine Empire, there is one pilgrim's token, two icons that are portable, nine encolpia decorated with the depictions of saints and three bronze objects of jewelry. The works in question were handled together with the concepts, people and ideas emphasizing the relationship between belief and worship in the Byzantine world in order for the rich iconography in them to gain a meaning and to be able to better comprehend what the dominant thought was in their emergence. The works, which have been examined and dated considering their iconography, styles and similar examples, are extremely important in terms of being rare and unique examples of Anatolian finds within the scope of Byzantine Art. © Istanbul University Press. This decoration approach, which primarily became popular in the palace and its environment in Istanbul, spread all over Anatolia in the course of time. Contrary to Istanbul, it is observed that, especially mosques were adorned with plaster and engravings in Anatolia. In these decorations, made by painted decoration masters or master groups, western influenced motifs as well as various religious and symbolic depictions were also included. Since many of these masters performing their art by traveling from village to village refrained from putting their signatures on their works of art, their names are generally unknown. However, it is possible to come across some masters' names, though not many. In the Demirci Küpeler Village Mosque, which we studied, it is noteworthy that the names of the master builder, as well as the illuminator and calligrapher who performed the engravings, were given. Although the mosque has a plain exterior appearance, its interior is adorned with a rich painted decoration. Religious calligraphy scripts were also used along with decorations. In our study, the building is discussed in detail, with respect to its plan and characteristics. © Istanbul University Press. We are planning to contribute to the literature by investigating the effects of the intratympanic administration of 5-fluorouracil solution form to the middle ear on the inner ear in rats. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 11 Wistar albino male rats: a positive control group was treated with amikacin, a study group was treated with 5-FU, and a negative control group received no treatment. One week after intratympanic drug administration, the rats were sacrificed, and ototoxicity was histopathologically examined by light microscopy and TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP Nick End Labeling) method. Results: There was a significant difference between the two groups treated with amikacin and 5-fluorouracil in terms of apoptosis (p<0.05). The difference in stria vascularis thicknesses was significant between the amikacin group and the 5-fluorouracil group and the negative control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The intratympanic administration of 5-fluorouracil to rats did not have any ototoxic effects, according to the results of the histological analysis that looked at apoptosis. © 2022, Istanbul University Press. This article focuses on 14 reliquary crosses depicting the Virgin with Christ-child, selected from this valuable collection. It is possible to see various types of the Virgin, such as Blachernitissa, Kyriotissa, Hodegetria, Nikopoios and Episkepsis, which are used in different examples of Byzantine art, on the reliquary crosses. In our study, five different iconographic types of the Virgin were identified among the reliquary crosses in the collection. The densest group among these are those depicting the Virgin Blachernitissa with 7 examples. Among the reliquary crosses, there is a rare example that we have identified as the Virgin Episkepsis and another example that we are discussing whether it is Kyriotissa or not. In addition, in the study, was drawn attention to the presence of different iconographic types of the types of Virgin on the reliquary crosses, which are not seen in different types of works of Byzantine art, but can be seen on reliquary crosses. 14 reliquary crosses, which are presented in detail in the catalog, 13 of them with engraving technique, date back to the 11th century with analogical and iconographic evaluations; In a single example with relief technique, it belongs to the 11th-12th century. The reliquary crosses in the collection were comparatively analysed and evaluated in the light of the different views and interpretations of iconographers on the types of the Virgin in Byzantine art. © 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. A tahrirat was written on September 13, 1899, A.D. (H. Jumada’l-ulâ 1317, R. September 1, 1315) on behalf of the Governor of the Hüdāvendigār Vilâyeti. In the documents in the archive, along with the documents prepared for the location and location of the new madrasah, detailed information about the Osman Gazi Mosque was also found. A suitable place for the madrasah was chosen next to the courtyard of the mosque and the Keşifnâme was prepared. In the Keşifnâme, there are drawings of the harim and courtyard plans of Osman Gazi Mosque and the madrasah rooms in the courtyard. There are projects for the entrance façade and a plan for the new madrasah to be built next to the mosque courtyard. In addition, the documents contain material information on the construction of the madrasah, cost calculations, construction technology of the period, architectural terms, measurement and weight units. Today, some of the walls and the minaret of the mosque have survived. Excavations were carried out in the ruins by the Eskişehir Museum Directorate, the results have been compared with the documents by us and the findings were found to be consistent with the archive plans. The study will contribute to the enlightenment of an important issue in the history of Ottoman architecture and it will be the basis for further studies. © 2024 Istanbul University Press. Through an in-depth analysis of selected poems, the study explores Ash’s encounters with ancient Greek cities, the impact of migration, and the use of metafiction. The study also considers Ash’s portrayal of historical events and the attribution of emotions to ancient cities and highlights his role as a semihistorian. Furthermore, it examines the relationship between emotions and thoughts and traces its origins to the emergence of Romanticism and the shift in the literature from strict rationality to the reliance on emotions. Within these compositions, his personas manage the preservation and history of ancient cities that pose historical significance in the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires and Armenia in poetry. Intentionally obfuscating the differentiation between reality and history, Ash invites readers to navigate the dynamic interplay between the plain present and the echoes of an ancient era. Positioned within the history of British poetry, Ash is recognized as a contemporary postmodern poet. A dualistic approach characterizes his poetic works in which one facet is marked by the emotive expressions of his speakers, particularly regarding the antiquated urban landscapes they visit. His philosophical musings on poetics, history, and poetry mark the other facet of his poetry. This study aims to examine Ash’s postmodern inclinations in light of his utilization of emotions and ideas in the poems of Two Books: The Anatolikon/To the City. © 2024, Istanbul University Press. The precise proportions or design decisions that underlie the division of various functional masses in combined-function buildings are unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine whether geometric and proportional relationships are used in the process of combining multiple functional masses. Geometric analyses of the combined-function buildings in plan and section drawings were carried out to determine the proportions and rules established in the combination of masses with each other. Geometric analyses include analyses of the special triangles, golden ratio, and module systems on the section and plan drawings of the buildings. The investigation revealed that the golden rectangle determined the proportional relations between various masses in the plans. In contrast, the modular system or golden rectangle determined the proportional relations in the sections. Formal relations were only defined in the sections by special triangles. The identification of mass proportions by a golden rectangle represented that one of the main parameters considered in the design of Seljuk buildings is the golden ratio. Achieving a formal and proportionate balance, particularly between masses and critical architectural and structural elements such as portals and cones, was essential in their design process. This focus on geometry enriches our understanding of architectural history and plays a crucial role in the preservation efforts of historical edifices. The insights gained from studying the application of the golden ratio in Seljuk architecture can significantly benefit scholarly research and practical conservation methods. © 2024 Istanbul University Press.
