Abstract
Scientific advances are shedding new light on the understanding and treatment of long-recognized conditions located at the interface of dermatology and psychiatry. The skin is one of the major avenues by which we perceive the world, and, in turn are perceived by it. When the skin itself is markedly affected by a primary dermatologic condition, psychological sequelae often follow, greatly impacting the patient's self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life. Skin diseases, especially chronic and pruritic ones, may cause a variety of psychological problems, including demoralization, poor self esteem, distress, social phobia, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Besides they can diminish the patients' quality of lives, they can affect also the quality of lives of relatives and partners of patients with the disease. It is important to be able to measure these effects for clinical, therapeutic and health service research. Sexual health is also perceived as an integral part of general health and sexual dysfunction in different diseases in dermatology arena became a new subject in recent years. Skin and mind are two major components of sexual act. Skin plays major role from sexual arousal to orgasmic phases of sexual activity. Diseases of skin can affect directly and indirectly of sexual disorders. In this report, male and female sexual functions and sexual dysfunction in skin diseases have been reviewed. Female sexual functioning scales, male sexual functioning scales, scales using for both females and males, sexual dysfunction in systemic diseases and skin diseases have been discussed respectively.
