Evaluation of the Impact of Psychological Therapy/Education on the Psychosocial Adaptation of Patients With Myocardial Infarction

Abstract

Objectives: This research was conducted to analyze the effect of psychological therapy provided to patients suffering myocardial infarction (MI) on their psychological adjustment to their illness. Methods: This research included patients who applied to Ege University, Cardiology Department and Manisa Private Sekiz Eylul Hospital, Cardiology Polyclinic between June 2010 and March 2011 and experienced MI, on the basis of a semi-experimental experiment-control research. The sample group of the research was composed of 60 patients who met the sample choice criteria (30 individuals in the experimental group and 30 individuals in the control group). Each patient in the experimental group was interviewed individually and received psychological therapy six times. The data of the research were gathered in two steps by applying pre- and post-tests to patients after obtaining written permission from the hospital management. For the data collection, the Tanitici Bilgi Formu (Introductory Information Form) and Psychological Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS-SR) were used. The data were evaluated using number, percentage distribution and matched sample test. Results: The average pre- test PAIS-SR (in total) score among patients in the experimental group was 40.67 +/- 12.28, and after the application of psychological therapy, the average post-test score was 32.71 +/- 11.01. The control group's average pre- test PAIS-SR (in total) score was 41.67 +/- 11.31 and average post-test score was 40.28 +/- 8.33. The adaptation level after psychological education was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group (Z=-4.733, p<0.01). Conclusion: In light of the findings obtained, it was concluded that the application of psychological therapy/education in patients who experience MI is effective in increasing their psychological adaptation to their physical illness.
