Communication of patient-physician in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute exacerbation

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate thepatient-physician communication of patients with chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who werehospitalized due to acute exacerbation.Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in thedepartment of pulmonology in a training and ResearchHospital in Izmir with COPD patients who werehospitalized due to acute exacerbation. 400 patients whowere able to communicate and literate in the 18-65 agegroup, were selected with simple random sampling thestudy. In the collection of research data, “PatientIdentification Form” and “Satisfaction Scale ofCommunication of Physicians” were used.Results: The total score of the Physicians'Communication Form Satisfaction Scale was 100.10 ±17.79. The mean scores of the sub-dimensions of BodyLanguage, Speech-Listening, Caring and Givinginformation were 11.03 ± 2.83, 39.03 ± 7.20, 42.06 ± 9.40and 7.98 ± 3.05. A significant relationship was foundbetween the communication characteristics of the patients,such as knowing the name of the physician, asking thephysician questions and answering the questions duringthe daily interview duration about the disease andtreatment.Conclusion: In general, patients reported satisfaction withthe total average score of satisfaction from thecommunication style of physicians.
