Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection usually affecting the liver and the lungs. Soft tissue involvement is relatively rare. In this study, we present a 7 year-old girl who was operated for a soft tissue mass on the left hemithorax lateral wall and who had the diagnosis of hydatid cyst postoperatively. It is important to confirm the diagnosis before surgery, because rupture of the cyst during surgery may increase the risk of recurrent infestations and may cause anaphylactic shock. Therefore, hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue masses, especially when they occur in endemic areas. © 2011 Logos Medical Publishing .
