Relationship between knowledge levels of men about prostate cancer screenings and their health literacy

dc.description.abstractPurpose: Prostate cancer is one of the cancer types mostfrequently causing death throughout the world. Earlydiagnosis of prostate cancer is important.This study was directed towards examining the relationbetween knowledge levels of men aged over 40 aboutprostate cancer screenings and their health literacy.Materials and Methods: The study has a descriptive andcross-sectional design and included 501 men selectedthrough proportional cluster sampling. Data werecollected with Socio-Demographic Features Form, theKnowledge about Prostate Cancer ScreeningQuestionnaire and Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire.Results: The mean score for the Knowledge aboutProstate Cancer Screening Questionnaire was 3.85±2.05and the mean score for Health Literacy SurveyQuestionnaire was 80.87±16.03. There was a significant,positive and moderate relation between the mean score forthe Knowledge about Prostate Cancer ScreeningQuestionnaire and that for Health Literacy SurveyQuestionnaire. The mean score for Health Literacy SurveyQuestionnaire accounted for 48% of the variance in thescores for the Knowledge about Prostate Cancer ScreeningQuestionnaire.Conclusion: Knowledge levels of the participants aboutprostate cancer screenings were affected by their healthliteracy levels.
