Investigation of temporal changes of phytoplankton in Karsiyaka Yacht Port (Izmir Inner Bay)

dc.description.abstractThe main aim of this research is to investigate temporal changes of phytoplankton composition and physicochemical environment parameters in Izmir Bay, Karsiyaka Yacht Port (38 degrees 26'92'' N ve 27 degrees 06'47'' E) between the years of 2003 and 2004. For this reason surface water samples are collected weekly at the depth of 0.5 meter at the same time of each day. Minimum and maximum values of physicochemical parameters of collected water samples are measured as respectively following : ammonium 0,06 - 40.72 mu g-at NH4-N, nitrate 0.191 - 24.86 mu g-at NO-(3)-N l(-1), nitrite (under detected limit) - 25.9 mu g-at NO-(2)-N, phosphate 0.87 - 17.58 mu g-at PO4-3 - P l(-1), silicate 0.78 - 48.6 mu g-at Si l(-1), dissolved oxygen 4.51 - 12.7 mg l(-1), sea water temperature 8.8 C degrees-27.6 C degrees, chlorophyll-a 0.004 - 3.93 mu g l(-1), pH, 7.46-8.45, salinity % o 35.97-% o 42.85, secchi depth 1.0 - 7.0 meter. The collected data will be basis for the comparison of environmental situations in Karsiyaka Yacht Port after and before running Izmir waste water Treatment Project with full capacity. The main classes found in the investigation field are Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceaea, Euglenophyceae and Dictyochophyceae. Considering the phytoplankton composition, Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae are dominant to the other classes with respect to species and individual number. While there are no great differences between these two dominant classes with respect to species number, it can be said that diatoms are superior with respect to cell number. Diatoms and dinoflagellates that are relatively in few numbers in January and February drastically increase their numbers starting from March and reach to their maximum levels from spring to mid-summer.
