dc.description.abstract | Video coding standards have been developed for various reasons like advanced picture quality, high coding efficiency and error resilience in transmission etc. Besides these objectives and differing from former standards like MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and H. 263, MPEG-4 has also been designed to improve user's interactive experiences with content of multimedia and direct accessing ways of different media types to visual content in a networked media environment which have heterogeneous structures. MPEG-4 was officially introduced in 2000. However, since first introduction, it has been improved with new tools because of the developments occurring at the side of the technology manufacturers, content producers, distributors and consumers of communication industries. MPEG-4, combined with H. 264 of ITU-T at last, enables new potential application types which may cause radical and important changes in different sectors from electronic mass communication to telecommunication in near future. In this context, the research is based on a comparative study of relevant technical documents, implementation samples and international literature about discussed technological progress. The study aims to provide a projection along with a conceptual model in which MPEG-4 is centrally positioned as a core technology with its possible effects on technological transformation of communication industries. | |
