Abstract

A large number of severity of illness scoring systems have been developed for last 30 years and they are widely used in intensive care practice. Scoring systems have been proposed for individual patient or groups prediction, for evaluating the performance of intensive care units, and for therapeutic trials. In spite of all of the careful research that has produced the various severity scoring systems, their uses are not yet universally agreed upon. This article reviews some of the commonly used general adult severity of illness scores, measuring severity of illness at a fixed point and over time systems. Their limitations and misuse will be briefly presented.
