Abstract

In the 19th century the importance of the non- Muslim community of the Ottoman economy is well known. The city of Izmir was one of the places where existed an intense commercial life. The Armenian Balyozzade family living in Izmir had an important place in the city of commerce. But there is not much information about this family. Balyozade family had probably come to Izmir in the 19th century and became one of the leading traders in the city. They made some investments in agriculture, industry and commerce. Balyozade family members were among the founders of the Hamidiye Ferry and served as the directors of the company for a long time. The family's activities were not limited to Izmir. They had some investments in other cities as well, i. e. in agriculture in Manisa. Balyozzades were effective at commercial organizations in Izmir. They took part in the foundation of Izmir Chamber of Commerce. For many years, they were in the management of the Chamber. The family was also city management. They were among the members of the Provincial Council and the Municipal Council. Balyozzade family was affected extremely negatively by the Armenian terrorist movement. A member of the family was killed by the Armenian terrorists. Another member was arrested while helping the terrorists. They probably were not subjected to the Deportation in 1915. But they were not certainly in Turkey during the Republican Era.
