E: This study was planned to carry out the effectiveness and reliability of IUD application during cesarean section. STUDY DESIGN: This study was performed in the department of family planning from April 1, 1993 to April 1, 1995. Intrauterine device (IUD) (Copper-T 380) was inserted to three hundred forty four women during cesarean section. The patients were controlled at 1,5 months and 1 year to observe any complication. RESULTS: In 224 (65.0%) out of 344 cases, IUD and strings were in normal localisation. In 38 cases (11%), only one string was observed in the cervical canal, in 58 (16.9%), IUD was in normal position whereas strings could not be seen. In 9 cases (2.7%), expulsion was observed. Complications such as severe bleeding, pain, infection and insertion in lower position were observed in 29 cases (8.13%). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that insertion of IUD during cesarean section is an effective and reliable contraceptive method.
